I’m not so sure he has an endgame so much as one myopic goal that he thinks will fix all the things that are wrong in his life/world.

Nimue still loves Merlin the most.
I think that’s a very solid guess.

I thought the point of that dialog was that the darkness won’t be destroyed in the end, but rather someone will be worthy enough to wield the power without turning evil and use it to protect people. It’s Merlin who seems to want to go with the easy solution of just destroying it altogether so they’ll “never have to ask that much of anyone”.
That is true, yes. But I meant that Emma embraced her powers in order to do something that is good. I don’t know that Emma is evil; she’s just using the power covertly in order to bring about the desired end. She has yet to do anything Dark One-ish in present day.

However, I think it actually has to do with Hercules. We know that they recently sent out a casting call for both Hercules and Megara. Not only that, but Hercules is known for his 12 labors, which could be what the title is referring to. “Labor of love” by definition means work done for the interest in the work itself, rather than for payment. Sounds like what it means to be a true hero, to me!
