-Merida and Belle’s adventure. I wanted to be invested, but I just wasn’t. The storylines aren’t the same, but I was reminded of Belle being paired up with Mulan in S2. To me, it felt a touch repetitive.

More than a touch. This is Belle and Mulan (s2) and Belle and Anna (s4) over again. Every time Belle gets a centric, it somehow is actually another female’s storyline and Belle is just sorta *there* mostly prodding the other female into heroism.

Maybe it’s the first Dark One who killed Merlin and used his heart to cast this dark curse.

But Merlin seems to be in favor of the SB’ers finding Nimue, which is why I’m scratching my head.

I figure sadly that Merlin is dead.

    *sigh*

This episode was a clunky, disjointed mess. I can’t believe I am saying this about a Rumbelle episode but I thought this one was only slightly above The Broken Kingdom but mostly boring, recton-y, and full of illogical plot holes and overly convenient moments that were never properly explained. But like Merlin told Emma, maybe it “doesn’t matter how” this episode happened.

    LIKED

–Not much but there were a few funny oneliners like “was that a kick my little munchkin.” As much as I loathe Zelena, she does evil and not giving a single iota about anything well.

–JMo continues to impress as the Dark Swan and being absolutely cold.

–Rumple pulling the sword. I didn’t think it would work, in all honesty. I thought he’d save Belle but it wouldn’t be enough.

    –Merlin’s a cutie. I like him.

    –Merlin’s message was intriguing.

    MIXED

–Belle’s adventure with Merida. I’m all for female friends going on bonding adventures but there was no sense to this one. Why was Belle in the jail to begin with? Why did she bring a book? Why did Merida “choose” Belle (just because she carried a book? Why not kidnap Merlin if she needed magic? Belle herself does not have magic, just a freaking book)? Merida’s overly long information dump about her father (shock! Child feels responsible for a parent’s death!)

–The bear looked better in the promo. But still, better than Mal’s dragon in S4.

    DISLIKED

–There is a total lack of logic in this show. I mentioned a lot of this in the mixed but there was so much “convenience for the sake of plot!” Belle being there with a book, Rumple throwing a bag of anti magic into the bear’s mouth for reasons, Merida managing to knock off three arrows and everyone bows to her because “hey look what she can do!”

–The appropriation of Scottish highlander culture without really understanding it, and relying exclusively on stereotypes, is rather insulting.

    –Belle’s cloak was ugly.

–The plot in Storybrooke has come to an utter standstill. Nothing is happening. Everyone stood around and stared at a magic mushroom and nothing happened.

–Merlin telling Emma that it doesn’t matter how he was in that movie theater. OMG. Just say that he projected himself to her! Make it up! Use a magical mcgufifn you have to! But don’t just wave your hand and go “it matters not, silly woman!”

    –Rumple smashed Chip. ‘kay.

–According to everyone in SB, if Rumple loses his life that’s an acceptable price because he’s had so many chances. But Emma we totally have to save! OMG: get this through your heads, you hypocrites. The darkness has been canonically established to be a sentient entity that can corrupt even a SAVIOR. What does that mean? It means that Rumple was just as much under the influence of that darkness as Blessed Emma Swan. So it means we try to save BOTH. Because they BOTH matter and are family! COME ON. Remember when he sacrificed himself for his love and his son? For the town? He is worth fighting for, just like Emma.

–Rumple didn’t injure himself for his son, not even a little bit. Retcon. Horrible character assassination retcon. He did for Bae and he did it because he was scared. That mix of fear and heroism has always defined Rumple, it’s what made him complex and the writers just reduced him to a singular concept: cowardice. Malarkey. Absolute malarkey.

–Remember last week when Rumple talked about how he did everything for his boy! This show can’t even stay consistent from week to week, let alone arc to arc!

–“I killed Neal” *Emma doesn’t even acknowledge any of this*

–No. More. Magical. McGuffins. For. The. Love. Of. Everything.

Viola Davis’s daughter dressed up as her mom winning the Emmy. It’s kinda too cute to NOT post.

    Review

This episode wasn’t bad but it wasn’t my favorite either. It was a passable (and slightly heavy handed) political allegory about humans inability to see “aliens” complexly and how we tend to lump factions of people together to represent the whole. Science fiction never shies away from hot button issues, and in fact we could argue that science fiction is largely always aware of and makes use of those issues but, while well done, it’s not exactly my cup of tea. Also, there is a definite lack of narrative tension since I know that the Doctor’s plane is not going to explode (and even if it does, the Doctor will save everyone), that Clara will be rescued, and the day will be saved. So it was a perfectly fine episode but it’s not one that strikes me as memorable.

    LIKED

–The Doctor wears question mark underpants

–Jenna did a really nice job playing cold and calculating once she was revealed to be a Zygon

–It’s always nice to see Kate Stewart

    –Harry Sullivan reference!!

    DISLIKED

–This episode wasn’t as snappy as the past few weeks have been.

–I don’t know why the writers are so fascinated with Osgood. Yes, she represents the fandom and she’s quirky but I don’t necessarily find her all that compelling.

    I think we’ll stay at a 1.6
