I think the stern hairstyle and makeup is a good symbolic look for the character at this stage. Emma has always clamped down on her emotions, and now she has an internal battle for control of her soul.
And I think the opposite, actually. The Dark One isn’t supposed to be inhibited. In fact it’s what Kitsis in the article: Becoming the Dark One “allows you to have the freedom to have no inhibitions,” Kitsis adds, which could play a role in exactly how Emma uses her powers.
The severe makup and hair seems in direct contrast with that idea. She needs to be a bit more…wild.

They put Rumple is crocodile scales because 1) he’s the Croc from PP but also 2) because it matched his “reptilian” (but stylish rock star) nature. Emma’s outfit should be less “military fem bot” and more dark ethereal. It’s not just that she’s the Dark One now; she the Dark Savior. She needs that mythical element—put in flowing black gown that incorporates feathers. Give her a wild blow out and smoky eyes.
If this is the outfit (and honestly, I think it is because they did film something in secret with their actress and knowing, 11 episodes at minimum at ahead of time, where they wanted S5 to go) then it’s a poor costuming choice (but like I said a page back, it’s not the first one…and certainly not the first one lately. Again, I point to Ursula)

Adam’s tweet pretty much spells it out. MEET the Dark Swan. This is their Dark Swan. This is how Adam, Eddy, and Eduardo have envisioned her. This is your FIRST LOOK at what is to come this season.
I get it. The costume is….bad….but trying to rationalize in the manner that is happening doesn’t really work in this case.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"But wasn’t even Elsa’s outfit different at the end of Season 3 as it was in Season 4. Wasn’t Hook’s hook on the wrong hand. I just think that we can’t quite know. I remember that promo commercial where they showed Emma with a sword and Emma protecting Henry from Regina and that really never went anywhere in Season 2. I mean it could be the outfit, but it might not be. We don’t know.
Well in both of those cases, they hadn’t cast the actor yet. This is not the case. Jen is clearly Emma and has been for awhile/forever. They didn’t hire out an extra, dress her in something to delineate a Disney role and then cast an actor after the fact. This is something they shot in April/May along with the finale with the actor who will be filling the role. You’re right we cannot know for sure (but again, this isn’t EW’s costume department because the photos are credited to ABC which means ABC took them, so it’s more probable that this is the costume Eduardo designed), but circumstances are totally different in this regard. This is the “first look” at what is to come in the next season, with the already established actor, with the already established storyline.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"Both of those would be better than what they put Emma in. But I’m not surprised at the uninspired look that we’re getting. Eduardo is good (there is no denying that) but lately the costumes have become rather tired and basic. Ursula’s was a confusing disarray of confusion with tons of stuff just tacked on; Cruella’s was literally just a black dress with a coat (though to be fair, rendered in classic Disney form); Mal’s was just a carbon copy of the Jolie movie; Elsa’s outfit was another carbon copy but a cheaper version that fit funny around the bust; Ingrid’s was “pretty” but very drag-eleganza.
The costume budget has likely been slashed over the years (much like the CGI budget) and there are a lot of characters to dress lately so things either get recycled or scaled down.

Or the one with Ariel and Grumpy. Those had no basis in the show or how they were in the show. It was just like hey look, Hook, Ariel. So this might just be hey look dark one Emma and have no basis on the show.
Sure but that doesn’t mean it’s not the outfit. They did the same thing with Elsa back before 4A: they filmed a little thing of her walking down the street with all the townsfolk watching her and it had nothing to do with the actual plot of the show but everyone was rendered as you see them–Elsa in her costume, Regina in past clothing, Emma in her typical Emma-wear.
I like how we can see some of Granny’s Diner menu and what dishes are actually on offer and how much. I know in American money you have dollars (which can also be called bucks), cents, dimes and quarters but where do they fit in on the value scale? Dollars seem like the highest value so how many cents in a dollar? Where do dimes and quarters come in?
