KeymasterActually, it’s been stated Rumple’s about 300 years old.
The reasoning: “He’s 300 years old. He’s met so many people over the years that he’s been impressed and unimpressed by, he’s taken on their voices, he’s taken on their accents and their mannerisms. He’s layered so much he’s lost himself.” Once Upon showrunners Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis point out that every time we meet Rumple in fairy tale land he’s in a slightly different time period and so therefore Carlyle actually uses a slightly different voice every single time to show this gradual layering effect.
http://www.ew.com/article/2012/10/17/robert-carlyle-rumpelstiltskin And Hook is 200 years old.
Killian: Believe it or not, I was once a child. Emma: Yeah, like a million years ago. Killian: It was more like 200.
Family Business (4×06). Anyway, the point is, it is still very, extremely unlikely Milah will come back anytime soon.
And that is actually just Bobby spit balling. There is no way they are 100 years apart because we saw Hook and Rumple together pre-DO curse, when Hook was a pirate (so post Liam) and Rumple was a human. That was said by Bobby back in 2012, but the in show canon shows that they aren’t anywhere near that much apart.
And I don’t think anyone here actually thinks Milah is coming back from the dead. It was a scenario someone tossed out just because dead doesn’t stay dead but no one actually believes we’ll see her in present day.

KeymasterETA: I’m not saying that it must be Emma stabbing herself, I’m simply suggesting that there might be more to the scene that we know and that stabbing herself is far more mythic, poetic, and a good visual (and we are watching TV after all). If I’m wrong, then so be it. But no matter what–stabby or wavey–it’s never been established so trying to use any sort of rubric of “what happened before” makes little sense.

KeymasterThere are plenty of things that aren’t established as in-show rule and then they go and do it… like splitting a heart and sharing it. I’m just saying that we’re off the map when it comes to Dark One rules because Rumple, for whatever reason, appears to no longer be the DO. If Emma is doing a spell, okay, but the show has established that there needs to be a stabbing for a new DO. Now, yes, it’s the previous DO but if that’s off the table, the stabbing could still work if the DO’s power goes back to the dagger itself.
Again, I don’t understand why you would assume a stabbing would be necessary in this unique situation. The stabbing is specifically to kill the previous Dark One. If there’s no previous Dark One to stab, then why is stabbing of any kind still required? Stabbing yourself to become the Dark One seems like an utterly pointless rule, if it were to become a thing. Why would someone becoming the Dark One have to inflict self harm?
Because how else does someone become the DO if there is no DO to kill. We’re in uncharted territory, again. The basic rule is that to become the DO you have to stab someone. There is no one to stab but the premise of it remains. It has never been hinted at nor said that holding up the dagger and waving it around will cause a person to become the DO. We did see Rumple stab himself and he ended up retaining his DO status. That was a shift in the rules because it was uncharted territory. This is that same idea; it’s a new rule that we don’t know about because it’s never happened. There is also something to be said about the power of a good visual. Emma holding up the dagger declaring that they all need their HEA’s or whatever pales in comparison to the savior stabbing herself with the object that is heavily symbolic of all that is evil and dark.

KeymasterAnd sucks in all the darkness into the dagger and therefore into herself. She becomes the new dark one. Calling it now.
But the darkness is literally supposed to be transposed into the new DO. I mean you have to physically alter yourself to become the DO, hence the stabbing. The darkness does into your body, literally not metaphorically. The darkness does not reside in the dagger, but in Rumple himself, hence his very real heart condition. The darkness and the dagger work together but if Rumple had cleaved himself from the dagger, the darkness would still be apart of him.

KeymasterOr Rumple dies before passing that magic onto someone else.
That seems the more likely scenario right now which begs the question of then what happened to the DO power. Is it just floating around in the air and Emma is…summoning it??? (again, though, how does she become the new DO if that’s the case)? And how did the DO power gets from an AU EF reality to our real SB reality if Rumple died in the AU version (which I’m starting to suspect….)

KeymasterExcept there’s no name on the dagger which changes the rules. There is no previous Dark One to stab so a new Dark One has to be created in a new way, ie: not by stabbing the previous one. Yes, I’ve seen the video but it feels weird that there would be no stabbing. We’re in uncharted territory as far as the Curse goes.
Why does Emma have to stab herself to become the new Dark One? That’s still nothing that’s been established as an in-show rule before. The stabbing only seemed necessary before because normally you have to kill the current Dark One first, but in this case there appears to be no current Dark One to stab. Perhaps Emma raising the dagger in the air for some sort of spell is all she has to do in this situation.

KeymasterMaybe we see the ending of the Dark One’s curse finally. Rumple was going to die in season two and Cora said if Rumple dies before the DO power is passed on to someone, that magic just evaporates.
And that seems to be contradicted in this last episode with Rumple saying that while he can die, the DO will live on (as if wearing Rumple like a meat suit but no one else is “home”)

KeymasterBut you don’t become the Dark One by stabbing yourself with the dagger. You have to stab the current Dark One. Though according to how Emma says “the dagger needs to be attached to someone”, it seems the dagger is currently nameless in that scene. Which means either Rumple already died without being stabbed, or he was freed from the curse. Anyway, here’s the video and two of the detailed set reports. Nothing about Emma stabbing herself:

KeymasterAlso, possible that they did the outdoor stuff and then moved inside for the actual stabbing if there needs to be some sort of visual effects? I dunno. With Rumple and Malcolm, they put up barriers to prevent the audience from seeing that Rumple is supposed to vanish. It just doens’t make sense for Emma to become the new Dark One and not have to stab herself.

KeymasterPossibly, though the entire stabby scene was filmed outdoors and has gotten out, something A and E are claiming hasn’t happened. Unless the final scene is a close up of the dagger with Emma’s name on it and then seeing Emma being “reborn” as the Dark One
If you re-watch the video and the filming reports, Emma doesn’t stab herself. I don’t know where some people are getting that, but that’s not what I saw happen. What I saw happen was Emma just raising the dagger in the air and disappearing.
I assumed there was a stab scene in there….? Or I thought people were saying that. Because how else would she become the Dark One
