ParticipantNo, you are most definitely not alone in this. That’s the reason why I’m so upset. His death didn’t belong in this episode, because it was just a tack on to it. The death felt very rushed, and Hook was already acting like Neal was dead before he’d even died. I feel as though they ended Bae as if he could have never existed at all, when that isn’t true. There are four plot making characters in his show:
Rumpelstiltskin: The man who created the curse, to save the child he abandoned.
Regina: The woman who cast the curse to avenge her lover.
Baelfire/Neal Cassidy: The child who was the cause for the curse. Who travelled through dimensions to save himself, to save his family, and escape making his father’s mistake.
Emma: the child destined to break the curse, and free a town of people from enslavement.
Even if the show didn’t promote Nealfire as much, his death was still insultingly played down, and ignored any of the significance he had. It’s been revealed that MRJ didn’t have other arrangements, and it was just plot that killed him. So, now I feel that there was no excuse to give Neal a better goodbye. I guess that the only way they can fix this now is through the impact of his death on everyone else.

ParticipantI think so. He mentioned to Zelena that he knew what the price was to bring him back. So, It was very likely that he knew what awaited him wasn’t “death” per se. He probably just figured he’d be sealed away for eternity. That’s a pretty heavy sacrifice…
Also, the black goo, I think Lumiere said, was the darkness that the first Dark One was made of. So Rumpel didn’t die, just reverted to dark matter in a vault.

ParticipantI think it’s more of a punishment for attempting to kill himself. I don’t think that Rumpel actually died. That would create a plot hole. I think he was just sealed within the Dark One’s Vault until someone else came and summoned the Dark One’s power again.

ParticipantWhat I did not like: I hated Neal’s death. This death was so rushed and tacked on, I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. It was agonizing. The death itself was wonderfully acted, yes, but I could not shake how horrible it was. Neal didn’t deserve to be killed off as an after thought on the bed of a forest, with a hurriedly placed “I want you to be happy even if it isn’t with me” beforehand. I’m used to character death from everything else I watch, but this was not the way to do it.
What was even the point of killing Neal off? He lived a terrible, rough life, and now cannot even move on to his happy ending. Emma has lost her true love. Her happy ending is probably wrecked. Rumpel’s happy ending is wrecked. I mean, come on. He wanted to commit suicide for an entire half of a season when he thought Bae was dead out of sight. Now he’s watched the light leave his son’s eyes, and for what? So Rumpel could say “Zelena” and move the plot forward? Because Rumpel is bound to be on the death train after this, Belle’s happy ending is wrecked, too. Also, when Henry gets his memories, who knows how he’ll react to losing the father he was just learning to love. It seems strange to screw so many lives for a twist that didn’t feel like it belonged there.
They couldn’t so much as push in some sort of memory potion stuff to let Henry at least see his dad again? There’s already been terrible writing to bring back the blue fairy of all people.
I guess it’s just the fact that this death was so poorly executed. The scene was fantastic! The episode was great! But this scene shouldn’t have existed in this episode, in my opinion. It was just a poor way to send Neal off. Even if speculation is true, and MRJ was the actor who was displeased and wanted to leave, this wasn’t the best way to go about things. I mean, Nealfire’s abandonment is the reason this show exists. Rumpel’s strive to get him back set EVERYTHING in motion. They could have paid more heed to that, and done better.
What I liked: I liked everything but Neal’s death, surprisingly. Even overly naive Snow got a laugh out of me. It was one of the better episodes.

ParticipantHmm. I don’t know if anyone else believes this, but here goes a crazy theory. I’ve heard that the seal may be the River Styx, and I believe it. I think the seal itself fills up with water, and that becomes a portal to the underworld. However, here’s where the crazy comes in:
I believe that Rumpel was down there, but never actually died. The Dark One obviously can’t kill himself, but why is that? I think that the dagger has a fail-safe that transports the user to the underworld until another person is smart (or dumb) enough to seek it’s power again. This starts the circle of Dark Ones over.
So, my theory is that not only does the Dark One’s curse originate from the Underworld (or something else in Greek mythology), but that Rumpel, in his mortal body, was down there…completely alive. When I saw him kneeling in the snow in the promo, he did not look like wherever he came from was pleasant. It could have even contributed to his madness (though, I think that the dagger controlling him also causes his insanity).
That would mean that the laws of Once wouldn’t be broken, and dead would still be dead.
Who knows, Rumpel may have even met some of his victims down there. *shiver*

ParticipantLIKES:
-I…actually liked Regina. I never thought I’d say this, but…*swallow* I liked Regina this episode. I have consistently been annoyed with her character since the moment she became sappy, and even moreso when they revealed why she was evil. But, this episode, I loved her scenes with Baby Henry. They were touching and I honestly began to like her.
-Nealfire FINALLY forgives Rumpel. I know that Bae’s been through a lot, but I’ve been waiting for the day that he would finally acknowledge that his father has been looking for him all this time.
-The happy-ish ending. Everyone seems to be putting their grudges behind them, and I’m glad. Rumpel was forgiven by his son, Regina got some adorable scenes with Henry without the Charmings around, and David and Snow can go on not abandoning their daughter again. Everyone’s got good feelings. Heck, even Rumpel complimented Regina’s parenting, and you know it takes a lot for him to say nice things and mean them. The struggle between the group over the same things was becoming agitating, so I’m glad that (at least for now) it’s over.
-Sir Gold of the Kingdom of Snark and His Royal Highness Sassystiltskin paid a visit. I love Rumpel, but I miss the old him…both of them. I was so happy to see Mr. Gold, in all his glory, shooting Regina’s dreams to shreds without even knowing it, right after seeing a leather-bound Rumpel in a cage singing taunts at Regina in a nasally, high pitched voice…It was so great.
-Henry got swapped. I like this for some reason.
-Felix was nice this episode…
-Malcolm Pan, not giving a flying f***. Malcolm Pan reached new heights of bad this episode. He decides if he can’t have Henry, he’ll just kill him. But he apologizes for “letting it come to this” rather believably. But when murder goes south, he just has his grandson locked up forever. Also, I can’t tell for most of the episode whether he’s being a jerk, or oddly sentimental in his twisted way. He says he doen’t regret abandoning his son…which is terrible. But then a little mood shift happen’s and Pan is slightly fatherly.Locking Rumpel in a box is bad, but then Pan’s all “I’ll never have to worry about my child again.” I mean…Does Malcolm really think that keeping his son in a box is a good way to keep him around without having to lose his child form?
I can just imagine: “Oh son! I’m gonna make you your favorite breakfast and slide it right through the magical opening. Aww, don’t sit there in total silence, Rumpel. Be happy! Daddy’s got you now, all snug in your box. He’s gonna keep you in his pocket for all eternity! Oh yes, he will. Yes he will…”
…I’m so sorry for that…
DISLIKES:
-Hook. He is currently the only person to not let this love triangle die. Just let it go, Hook. Let it go…
-Snow. For someone who is such a “spokesman” for love and goodness, she is annoyingly inconsiderate. She just threw around the fact that she was abandoning her child AGAIN as if that was nothing. I mean, come on. Are you serious? You’re going to, without a moment’s hesitation tell your adult child that you orphaned who has trust issues and a criminal past that you are just letting her go!? Then, you proceed to just blurt it out every time you get the chance like it wouldn’t hurt her feelings and she should just accept it.
Yeah, mind you, this is AFTER Snow has already revealed that she wants to have another baby, even though she hasn’t even rekindled a relationship with the daughter that she lost!

ParticipantAm I the only person who realized that Rumpelstiltskin might have gotten his high pitched giggle from his father?

ParticipantThe race has begun, guys and gals! All bets are in. The signal is given aaaaand we’re off. Oooh, there’s no Pan in sight, Team Brothers is falling sharply behind. It looks like the spinsters are making an appearance and OH! TeamFellowOrphan is coming up front for the win! Wait! Wait a minute folks…Mini Imp is giving the doll a name and TeamImaginaryPan has come up from the right and taken the lead with FellowOrphan following closely behind. What’s that? I’ve been informed that a magic bean has been thrown onto the track! TeamBrothers and FellowOrphan have suffered extreme injury and are dropping out of the gaaaame. Looks like it’s just ImaginaryPan in for the win folks…But…Oh, my. The question of youth has come in and is flanking ImaginaryPan on his right side! Will he make it? Will he make it? Noo! No! Oh you have to see this folks. The underdog, DaddyPan has come out of nowhere and is obliterating the competition. He’s gooing. Gooing. YES! YEEEES! DaaddyyyPaaaan has crossed the finish line and is out of there!
…It’s been a good race, ladies and gents. One that will truly go down in fairytale history.—————————————————–
Favorite Stuff:Literally EVERYTHING. This has been one of my favorite episodes in forever, but if I’m going to be specific:
Young Rumpel. Cute.
The flashback. Yes all of it.
The DaddyPan reveal. I was secretly fond of this one, but didn’t think it would happen, because it might have been a bit implausible. Much to my surprise, it happened and was nicely executed. The tears in Pan’s eyes when he watched Rumpel being taken away. He was a jerk, but at least it seems that some part of him cared.
Regina and Rumpel actually being nice to each other. I may be the only one, but I felt it so cute when Regina apologized for rubbing it in that Neal was dead. I also liked their other little exchanges this episode.
Rumpel’s line about going in with nothing but his good looks It was perfect. Especially with Hook and Chariming’s follow up.
Neal believing Rumpel, finally.

ParticipantFavorite Moments:
Ariel. She’s just so funny and bright.
Belle finally being an actual thing in this season. I also loved the slightly lusty look she was giving Pandora’s Box. Hint of power hungry, loose Lacey still lingering in her?
Belle and Ariel have girl power. Yaaaaay!
Hook seemed sincere. I first did not like Hook at all when he was introduced. He just seemed like the average “womanizing” character put in there for fan service, but now he seems at least like he is becoming an actual person. It’s interesting. I like it.
Rumpel taunting Regina about her significant lack of booty as of late. I dunno. I’m just terrible, I guess.
The Darling Boys are the outsiders. Nice twist.
Dwarves are cool. Like fezzes.
Felix. The way that he spoke and acted was really annoying at first, but in short scenes with little dialogue, he’s actually a pleasantly creepy henchmen to have around. I’m starting to like him more and more, really. I now look forward to him.
Dark Hollow is a pretty scary place. I enjoy that. When A and E were talking about this season, I was expecting something a bit grittier and mind manipulating. They did an awesome job of surprising me with the darkness of the tone the first few epsiodes, but hadn’t really delivered with that the last few episodes, (choosing to go back to the standard season 2 formatting) until Emma and the other two idiots went to Dark Hollow…Speaking of–
Least Favorite Moments:
I hate the love triangle. I don’t think it’s necessary here, especially if the life of the child of two of the people having this love triangle is in danger. They nearly sabotage the entire plan by being idiots so–
Hook and Neal being jealous children and nearly getting themselves killed for stupid reasons- is my second on the least he should have had more respect for the groups goals and worried more about finding his child than his relationship status. Speaking of (again)–
Neal still forgets that Tamara existed. Yes, she was not a “good guy”, but she showed that she had goodness in her heart, a want to protect Henry, an actual past and true remorse. Also, she was Neal’s Fiancee. He was going to marry her, and yet there has been no mention of her, no hint of sadness at her betrayal. Nothing. That really ruins this whole true love fight with Hook nonsense even more, because every time Neal has a “touching” moment with Emma, I am thinking: You just run through chicks like nothing don’t you? It’s fairly agitating. Greg and Tamara were kind of cool characters who presented an interesting idea of how our world views magic, but were given no point and really didn’t deserve to die with little (Greg) or no (Tamara) exploration of why they were even there in the first place.
Nitpick:
Wendy is not dirty. This is a nitpick, but it has been happening since season 2. This show is sometimes afraid to muck people up or make them look less than impeccable even when they are obviously supposed to. I am talking about Wendy (in this episode specifically). She has been imprisoned and yet looks as if she just came from the salon. It is an extreme nitpick, I know, but seeing Wendy come out of the cage, looking perfectly fine as if she just decided a few minutes ago take a nap in there is slightly annoying. Maybe Pan took care of her, but I honestly doubt it. So, for now, it’s a nitpick. You have been living in the wilderness for a century, imprisoned by a childish overlord who has little to no conscience. Look like it.
