ParticipantSide question: is the shows’ version of Zeus supposed to be the capricious sort of god from real Greek mythology? His decision to resurrect the pirate seemed pretty capricious to me, especially since Hook was the cause of so much needless heartache.
Quite possibly. Zeus’ reasoning for bringing Hook back were pretty broad and seemed to stem from “hey, you did me a solid by getting rid of my pesky brother who wanted to take what I think is rightfully mine, so now I’ll do one for you!” It’s so hard to say since Zeus appeared for a grand total of 2 mins and had, maybe, 4 lines of dialogue.
Zeus’ divine intervention just leaves me wondering then exactly what fate is in the show. Something feels off. I know “the gods” have been mentioned since season one, but what does it even mean for something to be fated in the show? We can be sure Emma and Neal were destined to meet, fall in love, and have Henry. Is fate simply the will of the Olympian gods in the show’s universe or is there some greater force than that of the gods (as in “The Force” from Star Wars)? I know. My questions are pointless. Sigh.

ParticipantThe frequent Neal mentions in S5 were ever present, especially for a whole season that basically repeatedly revealed just how toxic the CS relationship is and how Emma’s feelings for Hook have blinded her and caused her to disregard both Neal’s and Merlin’s warnings not to “give into darkness” by trying to save and then resurrect Hook. However, I sadly think this theory might be a case of a fan having better ideas than the writers of OUAT. ParticipantAnother podcast recently dealt with the issue of whether or not fandom is broken. I thought it pertinent, seeing how it relates to that article RG posted several pages back. The discussion kicks off at about the 13:00 mark.

It’s a worthwhile discussion, since some podcasters agreed fandom was broken while others disagreed. One person took a more nuanced view that broken fandom is simply a symptom of a larger issue of human interaction through technology being broken more generally.

ParticipantI certainly wouldn’t go so far as to surmise Hook and Emma were getting it on in the graveyard, but it was certainly in poor taste to film the reunion there. While it might make sense for Hook to be resurrected there, seeing how his body was buried there (as far as anything can be said to make sense on this show), it’s highly insensitive for the writers to film his resurrection scene almost directly after Regina said goodbye to Robin. I speculate the writers are purposefully trying to ignite drama in some misguided way of maintaining an “interesting story” that people watch. It’s the same misguided thinking that the writers apply to setting fans of Hook and CS against fans of Rumple and Rumbelle. Fans of CS and OQ had no reason to be at odds with one another before, whereas now they have just reason to be. One person died as a direct result of Emma trying to save the pirate. I am more than a little annoyed even though I’m not a big fan of OQ or of Robin in general. But it does leave a bad taste in my mouth that yet another father died in order to let the pirate live. It’s like Neal’s death all over agin.

No doubt, each one would have its own quirks and bad behaviour. I’d be interested to hear as well. I feel as though I only hear about instances of Americans in fandom culture acting out but that’s also likely due to the fact that I live in America.
The UK and Europe have an issue when it comes to football (soccer) culture and hooliganism. (Less so today, but it still exists). In 1985, 39 fans were killed at the European Cup final when some Liverpool fans charged fans of the Italian team. That is known as the Heysel disaster of 1985. ESPN also wrote an informative article about football violence from sports fanatics and how the English Premier League has since gone to lengths to try and combat it. Some young men would join gangs, and these gangs would usually defend their local teams with force. That, combined with a heavy drinking culture, meant drunken violence would often erupt among fans of opposing sides. While people would sometimes treat sports with almost religious devotion, fortuantley much of the hooliganism in the UK has been eradicated thanks to police intervention and heavy legal penalities.

The notion of “I will wait for you to be ready” is always, always, always more romantic and captivating than the “I will win you over and you’ll be mine” mentality. Every. Single. Time.

ParticipantI really want the show to wrap up the loose threads rather than expand its universe. There are so many stories that were left unfinished, even from season one. For example, we have yet to see the end of Abigail and Frederick, Dreamy and Nova, or Geppetto’s parents. We also have yet to see any resolution for characters like Maleficent and Lily or Will and Anastasia (the writers just couldn’t leave OUAT in WL alone, which had a beautiful ending). We never got the back story for Mulan or saw how she and Sleeping Beauty rescued Prince Philip’s soul from the wraith. We also never saw Guinevere and Lancelot’s love story resolved, nor did we see Gwen set free from the Sands of Avalon curse. (Never mind she is still suffering the consequences for Arthur’s mind-altering drug).*sigh*
