ParticipantColin O’Donoghue & Jennifer Morrison talk ‘Once Upon A Time’ tension
The first season of Once Upon a Time did a great, albeit frustrating, job of taking away any possible love interest for Emma (Jennifer Morrison), just when it seemed like something might finally spark between the characters. It was a show about fairytales, and yet it seemed at times that the one true savior was going to be the one character without love in her life and therefore without the possibility of a happy ending.
But as the show has gone on, we’ve gotten glimpses at just how and why Emma’s journey can’t be as simple or easy as finding some guy with whom to ride off into the sunset. She loved once—and whether or not he was her true love, she was deeply hurt by his seeming betrayal. It has kept her closed off and guarded and fiercely independent in a way that can be very lonely—but also character building. And it is when she comes to truly be okay with the fate that has befallen her, that is when she should be open enough to find true love.
Or so the fairytales like to say.
“Emma’s plight seems to constantly be to be the victim for the greater good…She’s really had to sacrifice her own feelings and her own emotions over and over again because she has this calling on her life to do things for other people. I think ultimately her journey is finding a way to embrace that and realize that is actually a good thing, but along the way there will also be a lot of heartbreak and pain to reconcile that,” Morrison said when LA TV Insider Examiner visited the Vancouver set* of Once Upon A Time last week.
But Morrison also noted that she certainly hopes Emma finds a little love in her life soon because it has been such a while, and she has been through so much.
This second season of Once Upon A Time introduced not one but two potential contenders in the form of Henry’s baby daddy (Michael Raymond-James) and Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue). Henry’s father left Emma once, and though he had a great reason, it may not be one she can see past the hurt to understand. Hook, on the other hand, she can see coming and can manipulate him just as well as he attempts to do with her.
“It’s been really fun working with Colin and having Emma interact with that character because they’re kindred spirits,” Morrison continued.
“They’re both thieves, and they both come from troubled paths, and they’ve both lost someone that they love, and they recognize [that] in each other, so there’s that camaradarie and that combativeness right away.”
O’Donoghue reiterated this sentiment, saying that Emma and Hook have a “mutual respect,” even if an “unusual relationship” from the start. She did, after all, leave him on the beanstalk—an action that Morrison laughed he should understand, considering he’s not deserving of trust.
“They kind of see an element of themselves in each other [but] there’s an element of distrust there, especially on Emma’s part because he’s a pirate and he’s ruthless,” O’Donoghue said.
“I don’t know if Hook trusts her or not; I don’t think he cares. I think he’s the kind of guy who thinks ‘Oh, I’ll have a go, and if it works out, it works out, and if doesn’t, it doesn’t’.”
To that note, O’Donoghue admitted that Hook is a pretty selfish character— “not adverse to using his sexuality to get what he wants,” But right now, what he wants is revenge and only revenge. Any sparks that might fly (and O’Donoghue teased that Hook will have sparks with “a bunch of women in general”) will be as a manipulation to move him further on his path toward revenge.
“His loyalty lies with himself. His loyalty doesn’t lie with anyone but for Hook. His motivation is sort of to get his revenge on Rumplestiltskin, whatever that means and however he can get there. That’s what it’s all about for him,” O’Donoghue said.
“I think that’s his overriding motivation in life now. He’s just completely self-serving, and if that means that he can have a relationship with one person to get what he wants out of that relationship, [he will]. He’s sort of a sociopath—just somebody who sort of manipulates someone and uses them for their own game. He’s a charming one, but that’s my take on it.”

ParticipantJosh Dallas Teases Snow and Charming’s Reunion
Snow White and Prince Charming became a fan-favorite couple within the show’s fanbase from their very first scene together. (Call it love at first glass coffin!) And many were upset when the two were reunited in the season one finale only to be separated again in the season two premiere, when Snow and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) landed in Fairy Tale Land. So what’s next for the first couple of Fairy Tale Land?
“We’re going to see more of the dynamic between Snow and Charming. Of course, Charming is trying to get them back. I think I can be pretty confident in saying that he will find a way to get them back into Storybrooke and into their life, but then it’s about how they move on with their relationship,” Dallas says. “They’ve been apart for 28 years basically, so it’s about them rediscovering each other again and whether or not they want to stay in Storybrooke. Charming wants to go back, I think. He wants to go back to Fairy Tale Land, back to their kingdom, the one that they fought for, the one that they love.”
Still, Snow isn’t the only lady Charming was looking to rescue and reconnect with. “He has a daughter [Emma] that he he has missed out 28 years of her life, so it’s about reconnecting with her and figuring out what that is,” Dallas explains. “I think he doesn’t want to push the parental thing with her very much. He wants to kind of stay back and find out who she is as a woman.”
Dallas teases that it’s not all reunions and family dynamics when the ladies return, as another, more nefarious one, will be crashing the party as well. “We have Cora (Barbara Hershey) coming to town, and she’s a nasty character, so we’ll see what chaos ensues when she arrives,” Dallas says.

ParticipantThe guest role of Helena is being cast. She’s a 30-year-old brunette who is a sophisticated lady. Confident and well-bred, this brunette knows her way around kings and courts and can wrap any man around her finger. Still, don’t let the sweet-talking fool you: She’s a warrior and has slain many deadly creatures; she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty to get what she wants. http://uk.eonline.com/news/363701/spoiler-chat-scoop-on-once-upon-a-time-glee-homeland-ncis-and-more
I think this firmly puts Helena in the same camp as Helen of Troy, whose face who launched a thousand ships, because her beauty caused men to go to war for her. As usual, sounds like OUAT made her out to be a heroine as well.

I have been thinking a bunch about realm jumping as there seems to be so many holes. The writers need to make things a wee more concrete. For instance, the hat can travel go to worlds with magic, but not to worlds without it. Yet, we see Jefferson and Regina pull an apple from FTL pre broken curse. Does this suggest that one can travel from a land without magic to a land with magic and then back again? What are the exact rules of the hat? Also, since Jefferson was able to travel to Frankenstein’s world via Hat, I assume that Frankenstein’s world has magic? How many times can a bean be used? What are the rules of the beans, or the shoes, or the globe, etc..
Perhaps Hook used the bean to gain entry into Wonderland. Perhaps Hook was a realm jumper before the bean. Perhaps he had the bean, wanted to go to Neverland but ended up in Wonderland instead and that is how he learned about the compass and met the QOH.
It would appear that Cora is indeed the QOH. (I was hoping the QOH was a sister but oh well). The write up defines the Queen as vengeful. Since Cora was cast into Wonderland, I can see why she would be vengeful and hate even the sound of Regina’s name. I wonder if Cora has Hook kidnap Regina’s father. If Cora is the QOH, I think she overthrows the original Wonderland Queen and pretends to still be her. That would account for why she keeps herself hidden from others.
Great questions Kallio 🙂 I asked Adam Horowitz about this a few weeks ago but he didn’t answer. I kept wondering if portals created by beans could be accessed from portals via the hat.
I think it’s safe to assume that Hook did in fact end up in Neverland. Why else would they have him state that’s where he was going. I am terribly however extremely curious as to how he ended up in Wonderland.
Going on the assumption that Cora is indeed the QofH then they would have had to have been within the last 20 years. Did Hook manage to leave Neverland pre-curse? Does the vortex, created by the bean, allow a return voyage? We certainly see a beanstalk still standing in Enchanted Forest.
Or, upon the curse, did all magical world’s collide thus allowing entry from one world to another? Can we assume that all other world’s have a tiny bit preserved just as the Enchanted Forest does? Is that how Philip & Mulan ended up meeting? Is that how Cora & Hook ended up meeting? Are they all crossing over one world to another?
I think that Cora became QoH when Regina pushed her through the looking glass, and that Hook met her in Wonderland even before the curse struck. That means there are portals (e.g. shoes, mirrors, wardrobes) besides than magical beans and Jefferson’s hat through which Captain Hook was able to travel from Neverland to Wonderland. Maybe there was another looking glass connecting those two worlds. When Hook and Cora met, they discovered that they both knew Rumplestiltskin, and they both wanted revenge.
I’m wondering exactly why Hook wanted to go to Wonderland in the first place though. Maybe he wanted to locate Jefferson, who was stuck in WL, to use his hat to get back to the EF. By then, Hook may have discovered how to kill Rumplestiltskin, which would explain why he wanted to get to Rumpel’s land. But then the curse hit, and Mr. Gold and Regina ended up in SB, while the curse casued Hook and Cora to end up in post-curse EF. I think all of the realms of FTL melded together when the curse struck, which is why perhaps all of these characters from different lands know each other.

I think Hook is in it for Hook. He’ll use anyone to get what he wants which is of course revenge on Rumple. Right now, he probably thinks all the cards are in Cora’s favour, so that’s where his allegiance will lie.
Agreed. Hook said something like, “I’ll side with the person who can get me there fastest,” regarding a ride to SB. He’s an opportunist who favors his own business, just as you might expect from a pirate.

ParticipantI wasn’t suggesting that Hook’s thumb was anything other than his thumb. As for the object in his hand, it looks to be carved and wooden, rather than the handle to a leather satchel. I could be wrong, but that’s what it looks like to me.

Jane Espenson recently tweeted this to a fan from Fan Forums, which definitely seems to be a confirmation, imo, about Neal being Baelfire.
Jane’s response @EvilDearie12 I don’t think she will be gut-shot by him having a son. Other revelations, however, will floor her!
I was ecstatic for about a nanosecond until I read this second answer from Espenson.
Jane’s response: @EvilDearie12 Are you so sure he’s coming to SB?
Don’t do this to me Jane! You already ripped my heart out with “Tallahassee”. I don’t know if she’s messing around or she’s hinting at something else happening. Obviously, Neal and Emma must run across each other again this season based on quotes from K&H after “Tallahassee”, so I would think Neal would go to Storybrooke this season.
The only two explanations that I can think of is that Emma goes to find Bae only to discover that he’s Neal, and he stays separated from the rest of the cast until season 3. It’s possible, but I don’t think that would give MRJ a whole lot to do. His tweets indicate we’ll see a lot more of him; although sadly I guess it is possible he’s not referring to this season of seeing a lot more of him. It still seems weird though to keep him isolated like that from most of the other cast this season.
The other explanation is that he goes to FTL somehow. It doesn’t really make sense except Adam Horowitz confirmed that other characters will cross into Fairy Tale Land. http://www.tvguide.com/News/Once-Upon-Time-Spoilers-Horowitz-Kitsis-1054834.aspx Although it could be next season or beyond whenever that happens, but that’s the only “evidence” that I have that could point towards Bae/Neal not going to Storybrooke.
I love reading Jane Espensen’s cryptic tweets; she can be so illuminating and so confusing all at once. I think she had to ask the second fallow-up question “Are you sure he’s coming to SB?” because she realized how obvious her first tweet was. Jane just had to quickly back-track by making us second-guess ourselves. I mean, it’s pretty clear that Emma won’t be nearly as surprised by the fact that Mr. Gold has a son as much as she will be to discover who that son is: Neal! 🙂 I still think Neal is going to come to SB, since he received that postcard from August with the name of the town and state, indicating that Emma had broken the curse. He is likely to come just out of sheer curiosity, even if he doesn’t initially intend to resume a romantic relationship with Emma.

I don’t really know where to put this, but I thought this was so neat. I doubt they knew that Jared Gilmore looked like almost exactly really young Robert Carlyle when they picked him, but it’s a pretty cool coincidence.
Awwwwe little Robert is so cute and so like Jared Gilmore in looks.
