ceege: I’m thinking this morning that, since we are dealing with Cora, it could very well be a lie that she killed him….I don’t think we should take anything Cora says as truth, unless we see confirmation on screen.

Good point. Cora is definitely not to be trusted, and I wouldn’t put it past her to be scheming how to turn Lancelot’s followers against Snow White’s band of warrior princesses.

I also think Hook has been stuck in the Enchanted Forest-present for the past 28 years. Somehow, Smee has been stuck in SB during the curse. I like the theory that Smee could try and force Rumpel’s hand to get Hook back by kidnapping Belle. I also really hope Belle can find a way out of the mine on her own. She really needs to learn to stand on her own two feet and stop being a victim all the time.

I also wonder if the hearts belong to people left in SB, FTL-present, or both. I have a feeling one belongs to Kathryn since we saw her heart being framed as evidence of her murder. I hope that Henry demands Regina give back those hearts. She is one twisted lady, especially if she keeps them.

We’re about to get an entire episode centered around Rumple, with some Belle and Red in it. We had an entire Regina-centric episode last week. I actually prefer this method of story-telling, because it goes deeper in one episode with one or two main characters than the writers could go in the span of 2 or 3 snippets of screen time per character each episode. Last week was really good as far as developing Regina’s character, and this week was really good for developing the mother-daughter relationship between Emma and Snow White. If the writers included every character in each episode, then there would be a limit into how far they could go, because they’d be jumping around every other minute. That would be more dissatisfying than the way they’ve chosen to focus on one or two main characters each week.

I also really liked the pacing in this episode. The writers balanced it well between the three story-lines, and I was happy that most of the time was divided between FTL-past and FTL-present with some SB thrown in. I think next week’s episode will mostly focus on SB and FTL-past with only a glimpse of FTL-present. So, the amount of time spent in total on each of the different story-lines seems to be balanced over all.

Favorite moment: Emma forgave Snow for sending her away, and Emma realized Snow gave up everything to save Emma.

Second favorite: Snow White body-slamed Aurora, who was really getting on my nerves.

Least favorite: Charming’s mother died, although she loved him so much.

I don’t recall the spoiler about Regina trying to turn someone we’ve always thought trustworthy. I do, however, recall a spoiler about someone we think we trust betraying his or her own kind. There was a lot of speculation that it could be the Blue Fairy.

Here’s an interview with Barbara Hershey. I’ve been waiting so long to hear from her about Cora:

Barbara is set to appear in tonight’s and next week’s episodes, as well as returning as Cora in episodes throughout November and December. While her role was initially smaller, it’s since been expanded, giving us a chance to learn more about her interesting character. And learn we shall. Barbara told us that we’ll delve into Cora’s backstory in upcoming episodes: “I do know they’re going to explore – as they do with these characters – why they turned, why she’s the way she is. There’s a whole history with Rumple, I’m sure, that they’re going to explore. I know it’s coming.” And will we will learn Cora’s whereabouts between the time she was pushed into the mirror until she appeared in Mulan’s dungeon in present-day fairytale land? “Yes, you will. But all I can say is that it’s very exciting.”

After seeing Regina attempt to regain her earlier goodness in last week’s episode, I had to ask Barbara whether that internal struggle might come for Cora, or whether she’s a proper villain. Barbara chose the former: “I don’t think Eddie and Adam approach any character as a ‘proper villain’, a mustache-twirling villain. They’ve always said that ‘evil isn’t born, it’s made’. I think when you understand when a character changed – what it was that changed them – it doesn’t excuse the path they’re on, but it does explain it. Hopefully you feel a bit of it, even now, under the surface with Cora. I’m not going to excuse what she does. She does horrible things. She’s very warped and whether she can go anywhere from that – beyond that – I don’t know yet.”

Barbara went on to explain that “For all her terribleness, she, in a very warped way, does love her daughter. We’ve all seen these parents who push their kids in a direction that they don’t want to go in the name of love. Cora is just this mega version of that horror story. From Cora’s point of view she loves her daughter and wants the best for her. Wants what she thinks would make [Regina] happy and free. So yes, she would be hurt [by Regina pushing her into the mirror]. Any mother would.” At the same time, however, “[Cora] is warped. She’s not operating from a healthy place, so I think all of her perceptions are kind of misguided and turned beyond what they should be. She has this line where she says ‘power is freedom’ and I think she means that. She thinks that’s the place for a woman to live and have happiness…not be a victim of circumstance or men, to be in a place where, if you have the power, then you’re free. She wants that for her daughter. [But she’ll also be open to] living vicariously through [Regina’s position in life].”

On a final note, I mentioned a scene from last week’s Once Upon a Time where Regina wanted to give up magic after getting rid of her mother, but Rumple made what were clearly false promises to get her to continue. So how much of Regina and Cora’s paths were because of their own desires for power and how much were as a result of Rumple’s influence. Speculating, Barbara replied that it was “Probably both. The other theme that they had last season was that magic comes with a price. I think that’s what they’re talking about when they say it…that you give up something to be able to have magic. You saw it in the transition of Regina from an innocent girl to the Evil Queen. I imagine something similar happened to Cora. You give up something, I think, for this magic, at least [for] Rumple’s magic. Maybe there’s other magic you don’t give up your soul for.” There is, and it involves fairy dust. But somehow we just don’t see Cora and Regina sprinkling it over things to get their way.

Phee wrote: That bit where Snow says, “Lancelot, of the Round Table,” and he replies, “Not any more,” hasn’t been in previous trailers, has it? Don’t think I’ve seen it before. That rules out Charming and Snow being Arthur and Gwen. Thank God!

I’m with you on not wanting a Prince Charming and Snow White to be stand-ins for Arthur and Guinevere. We saw enough of a love-triangle between David, Mary Margaret, and Kathryn in S1. I have a feeling that the relationship between Snow White and Lancelot is going to resemble the relationship between Snow and the Huntsman, who was sent to kill Snow but then spared her life because he saw her purity of heart and took pity on her.

Meanwhile, back in the fairytale land that was, on the eve of meeting Prince Charming’s mother, King George poisons Snow White, and the only antidote lies within the waters of the Lady of the Lake.

The episode description says that King George tries to poison Snow, and I think he sent sword-for-hire Lancelot to do the deed. However, I think Lancelot will have a change of heart and will try to warn Snow, but Snow will have drunk or eaten whatever poisoned object was planted to kill her. I think Lancelot will then save Snow by taking her to the Lady of the Lake, who according to legend, raised Lancelot as an infant. I think he’ll also try and save Prince Charming’s mother, who unfortunately, was seen in a picture with an arrow in her chest.

Rumpel may renege on this deal to get Charming’s help with something/someone important to him.

According to the synopsis for 2×4, Belle threatens to leave Rumpel in 2×4 and then she meets an old acquaintance that could be her undoing. There are promotional pictures of Belle being kidnapped by Smee, Captain Hook's yes-man. Then there are pictures of Rumpel with Charming and Red. So, I think Rumpel may come to a new understanding with Charming, who is now wearing the SB sheriff badge. This could make their earlier deal null and void.

    Regina was “tilting at windmills”.

    Brilliant symbolism.
