Once Upon a Time (ABC) by TV Guide
What the heck was that purple smoke?
At the end of Once Upon a Time’s finale, the curse was broken and all the fairy-tale characters of Storybrooke ostensibly received their happily-ever-afters. But before the bluebirds could begin sewing dresses, the evil Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) used the potion that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) retrieved from the belly of Maleficent to cast a smoky purple haze over all of Storybrooke.“The purple smoke is magic,” explains Morrison. “They’re bringing magic to reality, but does that mean Fairytale Land exists again? That we can go back and forth?” All the producers have told her is that “something exciting is going on. What’s interesting is that Emma is now going to know that Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and David (Josh Dallas) are her parents, Snow White and Prince Charming.”
What’s not going to happen, it seems, is everyone returning to their fairy-tale life. “That will be answered in Season 2,” says Morrison. “Breaking the curse may just be the beginning of the final battle.”
“I knew halfway through the season that breaking the curse was a possibility,” says Morrison. “It was getting harder and harder to keep Emma from believing.”

‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 2 Spoilers: Regina and Magic
Once Upon a Time season 1 ended with magic coming to Storybrooke, and that’s going to affect everyone, whether they want to use that magic or not. What will this mean for Regina?
OUaT Season 2 Spoilers
TVLine talked to Lana Parrilla about what Regina could be up to next. After all, season 1 ended with everyone knowing what she did and with her losing Henry to Emma. Then the purple smoke, which Parrilla called “more symbolic” and “a better link to something ‘magical,'” than the smoke was originally (it was “almost green”), took over Storybrooke and it looked like there was hope again for Regina. So what could be next? According to Parrilla, “She seems somewhat conflicted. She’s going through this huge loss with her son [Henry, now effectively Emma’s ward], and yet now there is hope. If she needs magic to get her son back, then so be it.” Uh-oh, that means that everyone’s yet again going to be in trouble because of Regina in Once Upon a Time season 2. (Did you really expect anything else?)Meanwhile, there is the matter of Rumpel getting his hands on that magic as well, and Parrilla did say, “I’m curious to see what happens between Rumpelstiltskin and the Evil Queen…I imagine that whatever it is, it is not going to be pretty.” After all, there were already issues between the two. Now that he knows she’s responsible for him and Belle being separated all this time, people are certainly not going to want to end up in the middle of those two. Will everyone have to take sides? It’s basically choosing the lesser evil of the two. Could there be those on Regina’s side, those on Rumpel’s, and everyone else in season 2? Whatever happens, the scenes with Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle were among the best of the first season, so it’s hard not to be excited to see what season 2 holds for their characters.

ParticipantDoesn’t it seem odd that the curse was broken when true love’s kiss was shared between two non-Storybrooke people? Emma was FTL-born, so she gets that credit, but Henry was modern-day born, and in Phoenix! Then again, maybe Henry’s father was also FTL-born (Baelfire?).
The reason that Emma’s true love kiss broke the curse, at least partially, is because her parents’ hairs were used to create the true love potion, a drop of which was put on the parchment of paper the curse was written on. That is why she is the only one who could break the curse. That was how Rumpelstitskin designed the curse. He said as much to her in the finale when she came into his shop as a true believer. Emma was the key to breaking the curse, and Henry was the cause of her belief. The combination of the two was bound to have a powerful effect.

ParticipantI know this idea isn’t very popular, but I think it makes perfect sense why Rumpel would want/need magic in our world: as a contingency plan. He came to this world, a land without magic, in hopes of finding Baelfire. When August showed up, Rumpel wanted so much for him to be his son, that he allowed himself to believe he was Baelfire. He probably hoped that Baelfire would find him. Yet, when that didn’t happen, he enacted his contingency plan to bring magic to this world in hopes of finding Baelfire. Since whoever bottled true love has the power to do anything, I think that this most powerful form of magic could enable him to bring back someone to life, just in case his son died. It’s been hinted at time and time again, by Rumpel himself, the Genie, Regina, and Maleficent that this is a huge limit that cannot be overcome. Yet, the fact that it’s said to be impossible makes me think that it’s this obstacle that Rumpel wants to overcome with a new most powerful form of magic: true love. He would want to have that power just in case his son had in fact passed away, especially if he cannot really see the future, as some believe. He needs a contingency plan.
Also, since it’s been said the savior, Emma, has to die for the curse to be broken once and for all, it seems like the plot is being set for her possibly to die. Yet, it seems like this story is all about the happy endings, especially for our heroes. If Emma has to die, there must be a way for her to be resurrected. There is a strong savior allegory of Emma as a Christ-like figure. It seems like Rumpel would work that into his plan somehow. Even if that’s not his ultimate intention, it would be a very beneficial consequence of his plan. It would also have a positive outcome for characters like Regina, Ruby, and Jefferson, who’ve all lost loved ones.

ParticipantThat is a very good point you raise. Will everyone be as mad as Jefferson was having two conflicting realities in his head? IMO, the key phrase is conflicting; the thing that drove Jefferson mad wasn’t so much remembering his past life, but rather, not being able to share this life with his daughter, Grace. His unhappy ending was having to live with the knowledge that he had abandoned his daughter in FTL in search of material wealth and comfort. That is why Regina mocked him by locking him in a mansion without having anyone to share it with. He went crazy from being alone in his knowledge. He had gained a fortune but lost his only child. When Regina left him in Wonderland, she again taunted him saying, “You never abandon family.”
My guess is that now that everyone remembers who they are, the two realities will be manageable, except now they have to contend with an unpredictable magic. Since everyone remembers who they are now, they will at least find comfort in one another, despite being stuck in our world. The Charming family will have each other, Ruby and Granny never lost each other, the 7 dwarves will find each other, and Jefferson will have his daughter.
