After reading the episode description for episode 20, I also think that August is Pinocchio. The fact that Geppetto searches for a way to save his own child at the same time he agrees to help save baby Emma fits the theory that it was Pinocchio who also got transported to our world as a 7-year-old boy and turned in the baby to police. I think the writers have been toying with us by putting the episode with Bae and Rumple (The Return) back to back with the next episode featuring Pinocchio called The Stranger. I still think Bae could be Peter Pan or a Lost Boy, but we won't see his back-story until season 2. Also, I think The Return talks about Bae's return to his father in FTL after a brief absence to fight in the Ogre Wars. From other interviews I've read by Robert Carlyle, we'll only see Bae in FTL, not SB.

In the fairy-tale world, a plan to save Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter unfolds and is agreed to by Geppetto, who has his own child’s safety in mind.

Wow, that just underscores that August really could be Pinocchio! I’ve long refrained from making up my mind, but I think this may be a critical turning point. The biggest hurdle I’ve read to this theory is that the wardrobe could only transport one person out of SB. Yet, who says that the wardrobe is the only way out? There could be other ways, like Jefferson’s hat, for instance, that we’ve yet to see. Also, Geppetto was good friends with the Blue Fairy and could have asked her for help. Also, we’ve seen Rumpel give a potion to Jimminy, which turned Geppetto’s parents into puppets. Perhaps Pinocchio could have been re-made into a puppet from enchanted wood, who took on human form again in our world (similarly to how Jimminy the cricket became human again in SB).

I really think the sign posts could be read many ways, but the clearest way for me to read it is that August is Pinocchio. We’ve yet to see Pinocchio in SB, which makes me think he escaped the dark curse. Geppetto is childless in SB, as indicated in the pilot. Pinocchio would have been about 7 at the time he escaped from FTL to our world, just like the article said. He has made references to the stories being as real as he is. August has a thing for adventures and water, just like Pinocchio did in the cartoon. He says he never lies, but then did perhaps, which is what Pinocchio was famous for: telling lies and having his nose grow. Also, it’s simple enough for a person to die his hair from auburn to brown.

If these are behind-the-scene photos, then perhaps the actors are just chatting about their lines to shoot in the next scene.

hjbau cited another interview: “As Robert Carlyle told us of the late-April installment, “It goes back to the moment he became Rumplestiltskin — and [his son] can’t handle this person his father [has become]. He wants me to give up the power.” Alas, that is much easier said than done. (Or as Rumpel would say, “Things always come with a priiiice.”) “He has to be stabbed through the heart to give away that power, so that can never really happen — but something else does,” Carlyle teases with a (non-maniacal) laugh, adding his own, “Dot, dot, dot….http://storybrookemirror.tumblr.com/post/19758087662/matt-spoils-the-return-of-rumpelstiltskins-son

Since Rumpel makes a deal with his son, Bae, to get rid of his dark powers, there must be dark consequences to that deal since magic always has a price. Therefore, something bad must happen to Bae. Since Carlyle also said, “You will certainly see where his son has…..gone to,” it makes me think Bae gets transported out of SB, possibly to a place like Neverland.

However, Kitsis and Horowitz sort of made it seem like though we see Rumpel and Bae make a deal, we may not see the outcome until next season.

Are we going to see more of Rumplestilskin’s son?
EK: Yes. And you will understand what happened between them. I would say there is great stuff with Robert and the son, as to where it is–I would say not this season–perhaps.
AH: Or we might this season–perhaps. The character of Baelfire, Rumple’s son, does come back later this season, whether it’s in Storybrooke or in fairy tale land, how that plays out, we want to be a surprise.
EK: In other words, we want you to keep watching. [Laughs] http://www.buzzfocus.com/2012/03/25/once-upoon-a-time-showrunners-edward-kitsis-adam-horowitz-wondercon/

    What’s Mr. Gold’s/Rumple’s agenda?
Will Emma believe she really is the daughter of SW and PC?

I have a few theories. Rumple’s probably still making up his mind about what favor he wants Emma to do for him.

First, the favor that Emma owes Mr. Gold may be for her to retrieve Belle back for him. Although Mr. Gold may not yet know about Belle being alive in SB, by the time he learns about Belle, Mr. Gold may call upon Emma to get her back. We already know that we'll see Belle again in the season finale.

The next theory I have is a tad spoiler-ish. Based on the episode summaries for 20 and 21, Emma is going to have to decide weather or not to stay in SB. Perhaps Mr. Gold's favor will be for Emma to remain in SB until the curse is finally broken.

Finally, I like the idea that Emma might be called on to discover August’s true identity and report back to Mr. Gold. Episode 19's summary description has Mr. Gold trying to uncover who August really is. Maybe he'll get Emma to help him since she has become pals with August.

@ DanielJLewis: Agreed. Just as Rumple warned that Snow White would become as dark as Regina if she murdered the queen, so I think that Regina became as dark as Cora by killing her own mother. There are a lot of parallels to how Rumple became the Dark One when he killed Zoso, which also makes me think that Rumple somehow endowed Cora with a kind of dark magic. We now know that Cora is indeed the miller’s daughter from the Rumpelstiltskin story, in which she guessed his name and therefore kept her first-born child. Thus, perhaps Rumple wanted to get even with Cora by cursing her with dark powers, knowing she’d eventually meet her death, because all magic comes with a price. After all, Rumple knew full well what would happen to Snow White if she killed Regina. He must have foreseen that Regina would become darkened if she killed Cora.

@ Surayya: My point wasn’t to restate that Rumple was still imprisoned when the dark curse hit. Rather, it was to make the further point, that despite being in jail at that time, Rumple could have given a magic potion to Geppetto before he was imprisoned. Geppetto could have held onto the potion to give Pinocchio right before the curse reached FTL. If puppet Pinocchio were made of enchanted wood, he didn’t have to be transported via the wardrobe to our world. It doesn’t matter that Rumple was in jail then, because Rumple didn’t have to be present for Pinocchio to drink the potion and be turned back into a puppet. Back in ep. 5, Rumple wasn’t present when Geppetto’s parents drank the potion by mistake. Rumple had previously given the potion to Jimminy, saying he’d collect his payment (i.e. the puppets) after the fact.

Surayya wrote:Rumple was locked up in the dwarf prison/cage & Pinocchino was with Geppetto both in the room when the Blue Fairy arrived with the enchanted tree & was with Geppetto while making the wardrobe. So I gonna go with unlikely on that one 😉

For all we know, Rumple was still imprisoned when the dark curse was unleashed. Still, it could be that Rumple gave Geppetto the potion either in advance of being imprisoned or while in prison. Perhaps Geppetto sought him out wanting to protect his boy, Pinocchio. Also, even though we saw Geppetto and Pinocchio making the wardrobe, Geppetto could have insisted Pinocchio drink the potion at the last moment to transport him out of FTL just before the curse hit.

I posted this on another thread, but I’ll add it here since it’s very relevant.
Has anyone else considered that Rumple could have transformed Pinocchio back into a puppet after he’d been turned into a real boy by the Blue Fairy? We’ve already seen how Rumple gave the potion to Jimminy in order to change his parents into puppets. However, Geppetto’s parents we turned by mistake. If puppet Pinocchio were made of enchanted wood, that could explain how Pinocchio could have been transported to the real world without having to go through the wardrobe. That could also explain why Pinocchio would want revenge against Mr. Gold in SB, as hinted at by the promo and summary description for episode 19. Also, regarding the hair color discontinuity, it’d be simple enough for August to color his hair brown to conceal his identity (after all, red hair is a dead give-away).
