ParticipantAnyone else notice that Regina was fingering her peridot ring under the tree when Tink came to ask her if she went back to find Robin? I’d keep an eye on that, after all David’s mother’s ring proved to be a true love dousing rod.

ParticipantNow the writers have told us before that its not a good idea to take the villains word at face value although as Obi-wan would counsel what they say is the truth from a certain point of view. For all we know George may have thought he and his wife’s lives were blissful but in reality his wife may have been miserable and rather than continue she fabricates a fiction about a potion rendering her barren and is cast off while in actuality she’s pregnant and when George discovers the deception he kills her. After all in “The Shepherd” Rumple says to George that now that his Queen is gone conceiving another heir is out of the question. Kurosawa’s rashomon effect as ever, Snow believed she had Excalibur didn’t she?
Conversely they may take a page from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet here: an uncle deposes his brother to posses his throne and his brother’s widow and his nephew the true heir rather than talking to skulls in this case winds up in exile. Just a thought, just a playful thought…

ParticipantFocus on the other symbols may prove more enlightening esp. since we expect the Evil Queen to be assoc. w/ Apples. I discovered that focusing on the appearances of apples and her apple tree distracts from the subtle queues in Lana’s performance and from symbols less familiar with the traditional Evil Queen from Snow White such as the unicorn. As an example of performances giving away plot the interactions between Jared Gilmore and Robert Carlyle in season 1 made me suspect Rumple had more of a connection to Henry than just Mr. Gold being nice to a boy who reminded him of Bae. I know it sounds and is instinctual but I like taking such leaps of faith.

ParticipantOooooh. Now that’s some interesting crack (what we call wild speculative theory)
Hee hee! Well dearie, suppose I told you I suspected Rumple was connected to Henry way back in 1×04 “Price of Gold” and that leap of faith played out nicely. Maybe lighting will strike twice.

ParticipantNot to belabor the point but I see no coinage in Regina’s costume only beads and one small circular charm above her right eye. Moving on another observation I’ve made is the magic synergy between Regina and Emma. Now I think I should preface this by adding that Regina takes things as far as they go and Emma goes farther. Prime case in point Season 2 premiere and finale: Regina alone cannot get the hat to work and Regina alone can contain the trigger but not defuse it. In both cases Emma brings enough to bring them over the proverbial finish line. Rumple remarks to Regina that she could “do so much” if she would let herself. To me this implies that it is within Regina to go farther but she needs the faith and trust of her family circle to make it.

ParticipantMy pleasure My area of history is technically the ancient world but this area of time has always fascinated me largely because of Eleanore of Aquataine, so glad to help out. But back to the tattoo. This is Richard’s coat of arms toward the last bit of his life
Well isn’t this a coincidence I’m a history buff as well. I’m more of modernist late 18th to 20th century. But I also enjoy the Middle Ages from time to time, it must the Merovingian/Plantagenet blood in me . On the subject of the tattoo I’ve observed it has a good deal more in common with the Swedish Royal Lion and the German principalities.
For reference King George’s Coat-of-Arms
And Robin’s tattoo
This also gets me to thinking with the images how it would be possible for Robin to be related to George, a long lost son? Which is perhaps possible if the writers can circumvent the bit about George’s wife being rendered barren. He could also very well be a nephew, son of brother who was usurped by George whom we know to be a vengeful man. Pure speculation but fun nonetheless.

ParticipantJust to clarify my post does not imply that he is cruel or unjust merely that he like all our characters is flawed. It must be said however that he did neglect his wife (Regina) and all the attention he lavished on Snow would make Regina feel that much more isolated. In the end the story is about human frailties is it not? Devil’s advocate here let’s substitute Robin for the Genie in Fruit of the Poisonous Tree. When the lines from Regina’s diary are recited she recounts how the gift of the mirror rekindled her hope for love and companionship even though she was a prisoner of her husband’s court. Leopold then says that while he knows her to be unhappy he never believed she would betray him, saying that love makes people do foolish things. If Leopold felt that Regina having an affair was a betrayal it stands to reason he’d feel the same if she ran off with Robin abandoning him and Snow.

ParticipantI still hold it’s much more of a dream catcher motif. Authentic gypsy jewelry has a tendency to be based on small coinage. It must also be said the spiral image is one of the most common symbolic forms. Now I agree the overt intention was to portray Regina as something of a gypsy peddler however, considering the cross-pollination of different stories/mythologies etc. the image of that earring evokes symbol of the dream catcher.

ParticipantGreat observations! I hadn’t noticed these but I did note in the pilot that we saw Regina’s living room contains a reproduction of the famous Antonio Canova sculpture of Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss.
Here’s another bit of the Psyche story when Cupid/Eros revived her the gods granted her immortality via ambrosia and Psyche sprouted butterfly wings and became goddess of the soul. I mentioned that in 3×03 we see a butterfly pass by at the beginning of the show. Interestingly enough, Regina mentions that when she opened that door she felt as though she would “float away” coincidence?
A conspiracy theory is forming in my mind. What if Rumple knows that Rob is Regina’s other half? His expression when the Sheriff reveals his name (or at the very least his nomme de guerre ) in 2×19 “Lacey” seems to indicate that. Rumple would see their getting together as a threat. Now Belle stopped him from killing Robin when she reminded him of his guilt over Bae which allowed Marian to give birth to Roland. But w/o Belle’s influence Rumple would do everything in his power to manipulate Regina into casting that Curse and in order to make sure that they keep apart he adds that caveat to the curse that curses Regina with a hole in her heart she will “never be able to fill.” Stands to reason then if she can’t fill it someone else must. I think the endgame will involve Emma and Henry healing the whole family by returning love to Regina and by extension to everyone else. I must say it would be delicious irony if Rumple and Regina wind up keeping one another’s soul mate away from them.
