I disagree. just because Hook said that about Rumpel doesn’t mean it’s true. Hook is a villain, and just like Regina, he thinks himself better than he really is. he doesn’t admit that he is a villain. but Rumpel is different. he never tried to convince himself that he isn’t a monster. so I really don’t think that the reason for staying in the hovel was to scare people… it’s actually an interesting thought, but I doubt it’s true. I think he stayed there because he thought it would be best for his son to stay around friends (like Maureen sp?) I think his greatest fear, the fear that made him a coward was fear of abandonment or to be alone. and if he lived in a palace his son would be lonelyi don’t necessarily take what a character says as the truth, but in this case I actually agree with Hoook. To me Hook is the most self aware of the “villains”. He has admitted he is a villain and is trying to change of his own accord, not at the nagging of other characters. I agree with you that Rumple sees himself as a monster but he has never shown true remorse or even an understanding of the damage his caused others. To me, he seems to justify/minimizes it as they should have known better than to deal with the dark one, even in those instances where he manipulated all the circumstances so the person has no choice but to deal with him.
I don’t think that they stayed in the village for Bae’s friends, Rumple kept Bae isolated from others. it was the point of their fight in Nasty Habits. The other villagers including their kids were terrified by Runple and kept their distance from Bae. Remember that one scene where the kids ran away when Bae approached. Think about it. if you knew the guy down the street was a mob boss would you want your kids to play with his. I wouldn’t. I would keep a respectful and polite relationship with that neighbour but would not want myself or my kids to get sucked onto that world. With Rumple it’s even worse, if you disagreed with Bae or upset him slightly Rumple would not Hesitate to kill, maim, hurt you or your family. Basically, all the kids would list Bae win all the games out of fear for his father, they would also won’t feel comfortable being themselves or disagreeing with Bae for fears his father.

sweetgrassParticipantI think Rumple wanted to confront Pan and make Pan afraid. he wanted Pan to suffer for hurting him and rumple wanted to feel powerful to him himself and his father. basically it is the same reason he made the solider kiss his boot before killing him. Rumple is a coward but with his power he is not and can confront anyone who knows the truth about his cowardice. It’s like Hook said in the Outsider, Rumple needs to show how strong he is to compensate for his true cowardly weak self.
i know lots of fans want to excuse Rumple’s behaviour in his early dark days as being part of the curse. I see it as being the result of wanting to hurt to the villagers for his suffering. it’s why he didn’t move to a castle initially and stayed in his village. he wanted to terrorize everyone so that they were afraid and felt like cowards. He wanted to also show them how powerful he was. Basically, e wanted to project his feelings of cowardice on others, so he could feel powerful. that is what he was doing with Pan. like Bae, I don’t give Rumple a pass.
for me the only question is Rumple still a coward because of one non-cowardly act, I see that act as more unselfish than brave. If he had run away an done nothing, he would have suffered more so I don’t find him that brave and he still used magic to kill his father, by using a magic dagger and his flying shadow. I will give him that he was finally not selfish and was motivated by his desire to save Bae and Belle.

sweetgrassParticipantSara I am sorry to see you go. I can understand re-assessing your commitments and adjusting your activities. This is a show and it is meant to be entertaining and should not overtake someone’s life. It’s important to keep balanced. i hope that you are able to use the hiatus as a break and come back and watch the show in the Spring without it becoming too overwhelming. Hopefully, it will be just fun for you.
I hope you don’t stay mad at Colin. He seems like a nice person. he’s got a lot on his plate with a new son and having his wife move to Canada away from family and friends who could help with the baby and with home sickness. I think between the baby, the extreme work schedule, the minimal Christmas break for him (I don’t think he got the same deal as Robert C. to fly homemade for five weeks), Colin may be tapped out. I’ve thought he looks more tired this season and his skin isn’t as fresh. to be honest I think he has also gained a pound or two. Also Colin may not realize how much effort CSers put in.

sweetgrassParticipantSometimes , I am a terrible person, but those pics (JMO, MRJ, and Emile) just make me laugh. I should have more sympathy but the photos are funny to me.

I think after the third episode people were expecting to see the plot move more quickly, to have more confrontations with Pan, more hero victories instead of wandering around. it is a shame because with this Pan, Tinkerbell and Hook — all of whom have amazing chemistry with each other and are amazing actors — we should have had more interactions and interesting scenes with them. there should have been swordfights with Pan. we should have a greater understanding of Tinkerbell and her relationship with Pan and Hook and even Bae, We should know more about Hook and Bae. Instead it felt like an drawnout overlong quest so that the Rumple Pan reveal could happen near the end of the arc. There was no reason that they needed this to be in Neverland since most of the iconic Neverland relationships/adventures were given lip service and not showcased in any way. Look at the Darlings, it was almost like they were an item on check list rather than woven into the show. The thing is I wouldn’t want this to be all about Hook and Pan. I don’t think it is fair to other character’s fans, but I don’t think A&E made effective use of the Neverland characters. With the non-never land characters they should have been focusing on their evolving relationships and feelings for each other.
Getting back to my point, my sister won’t watch OUAT because she feels like they never move forward and everything gets reset. Someone watching this arc would feel that way for the middle episodes. I think that is what hurt. Beginning with A Common Fairy (which I really liked) the episodes seemed more like filler episodes to get to Save Henry. I also think that they need to rethink the flashback usage. I don’t think that every episode needs them, unless something entirely new is being shown/explained. I think it would be better to use that time to start giving more emotional character moments in the present.

sweetgrassParticipantHE – I have a question for you.
i think Snowing is A cute couple, but I grown a little tired of the Regina/Snowing flashbacks. I would rather see Snowing adjusting to their present as parents to Emma, showing more leadership in Storybrook (especially Snow), exploring how they have changes. ThosLinda’s of things. I was wondering what you would like to see for them.

sweetgrassParticipantTo be clear, when I postulated that Hook might be a double agent, I meant that he is working as a spy for the Charmings against the WW.

sweetgrassParticipanti had to stop looking at the Swanfire thread. It would upset me and I found that I started to dislike Rumple and Neal (because I felt Hook was being unfairly targeted to benefit of these characters), which impacted my ability to enjoy the show. Since I’ve realized I can’t change anyone’s mind, I’ve stopped looking at the thread and am liking Neal more.
