Why on Earth would people want to see a rehash of S1 IN S7!? Why would they want to see Hook, Regina, and Rumple stripped away of everyone they love, their true loves, and be cursed?
Actually it wouldn’t technically be a rehash bc we never saw Rumple or Regina or Hook stripped away from everyone they loved in season 1. It was Emma, and Snowing and the rest of the town. So technically, it’s different.
[adrotate group="5"]thedarkonedearieParticipantThis is the problem. I just don’t know. We don’t know enough about the next season. We know pretty much nothing. I am just not convinced.
You aren’t convinced because you don’t know anything yet?
I’m totally willing to give it a fair shot. As has been stated, we know basically nothing about what will happen. I honestly see this as a good thing!
Exactly.
Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar had nothing to do with the story.
Not true. They were tied in to Emma’s savior story and her savior shakes. They brought on these new characters but incorporated them into Emma’s story. And what I’m saying is, Jafar worked in Wonderland bc his story was written at the same time as all the other characters bc they were all new. They didn’t have to tie Jafar’s plan into something that was already canon (Emma being the Savior). They came up with a motive for Jafar and then everything else fell in place. And in my opinion, that’s easier to do when all the other characters are new as well. Take Jasmine for instance. She came in to storybrooke. They wanted her to meet Snow White. How could they do it? Well, we knew Snow was a teacher so even though we never see her teaching, they showed her teaching and made Jasmine some sort of teacher’s helper or whatever. Her story was forced right from the start in order to mesh with already existing characters. And take Aladdin. He could have had his own unique story, but nope. He had to be tied to Emma’s Saviorhood to further Emma along in her journey as the Savior, to show the audience and her that these shakes have happened before and that she was destined to die. And ultimately, Aladdin led us to the shears of destiny which ultimately cut Aladdin’s Saviorhood off, cut the EQ’s path and led to Regina accepting herself, cut Blue Fairy’s magic off and helped forge the Hrunting sword that ultimately got Black Fairy to storybrooke, and then cut Rumple’s path from Saviorhood as well via Black Fairy. So yes, all these characters led to something that happened on the show. But again, it’s new characters story lines getting morphed to best serve the old characters on the show and to further the plot for them, instead of having the new ones be the star.
And you are right. The writers were unable to make those old characters interesting anymore and that’s on them. But perhaps they are better when the characters are all fresh. They proved when they have fresh new characters, the story is good. They proved it with season 1 and with Wonderland. That’s all I’m saying.
thedarkonedearieParticipantI think that the writers used to know how to write a cohesive story, but they just don’t anymore. I think they are so worried about the show ending that they are thinking what gimmick can we use to try to get people to watch, what new princess or new twist or new trick, that they have completely lost sight of the fact that a show needs to have a story. They haven’t written character arcs with beginnings, middles, and ends since 3A and the character arcs should be the story. They introduced Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar and they had nothing to do with what was going on with the characters except for a couple scenes where Aladdin talked to Emma about her saviorness. Even the savior problems and Emma supposedly meeting the villain that will kill her never happened. The land of untold stories was nothing. The special sword that could destroy Emma’s nemesis was just broken and gone. The sheers were used in a side plot with Regina’s double, but they didn’t even do a character arc with that double This being the final battle where Emma goes against her true villain never happened; Rumpel just killed the black fairy and Gideon became a baby. Regina not being in Emma’s vision and what that might mean was not a thing. The vision itself being completely different then what happened in real life makes no sense. Pretty much the beginning had nothing at all to do with the end and that has been happening for seasons, so i am not convinced that they can do it again. At least not til they take a break and step away and actually realize what they are doing wrong. It is like they are just too far in and can’t even see what the problem is and there is just no excuse for it. It has gotten so bad that it is just inexcusable.
And I would just counter by saying all those characters they introduced, like Aladdin and Jafar and Jasmine, were not the main players of the story. The story still had to revolve around the main characters whose stories had gotten stale. But, you take away those stale characters, establish new ones as major players who can do whatever they want without it affecting the old character’s prior and current story lines, and I think you could potentially have a cohesive compelling story again, just like Wonderland, where Jafar was basically the major player along with new characters like Alice and Cyrus and Will and Ana, all of whom they could mesh their stories with Jafar’s more seamlessly bc they were all new characters and were starting from scratch.
OUAT always prided itself on bringing in classic fairy tale characters and turning their story on it’s side to incorporate it into their show. But I actually think that after season 3a, this ended up being the show’s weakness. They actually became really bad at incorporating new characters into the show bc the old characters on the show had gotten so stale and the new characters were never given the spotlight to have the freedom to write a compelling story. Listen, season 7 could still suck, but I do think getting rid of characters like Snowing, Emma, Zelena, etc. can open the door for new characters that potentially won’t get bogged down by old character’s story lines.
thedarkonedearieParticipantAt this point I think Barbara is her own entity and the writers aren’t trying to do anything but let the character and Erin Richards have fun.
That is the sense I’m getting too. Which is too bad bc honestly her character is more like Harley Quinn. A little crazy, violent, unique, loud, boisterous. Lee’s is not. She just took the virus which basically just made Barnes a roided out lunatic. He was flat bc his character was only doing what he was doing bc of the virus. To me, that takes away from the “villain.” If Lee is just an angry overpowering jerk now, I just don’t see how that translates to Harley Quinn.
thedarkonedearieParticipantGd I really just hated that dress. Beautiful scene. Gross dress. Alice’s in Wonderland was just so much better.
thedarkonedearieParticipantI loved Jafar’s story and was thoroughly dissapointed in what OUAT time did with him this season. They made a complex villain who was truly powerful into a weak easily defeated side note.
And I just don’t get why they did this to him in OUAT. I get it. Their story changed and he wasn’t as prominent. Fine. But when he did appear in A Wondrous Place, couldn’t they have had him defeated in a more exciting way? It was such horrific writing compared to how they defeated Jafar in Wonderland.
thedarkonedearieParticipantSide note: I hate the idea of being buried alive and suffocating. So props for Lee for doing the most terrifying thing on the show I have seen to date. It’s why I am like the only one who enjoyed the Nicki and Paulo episode of Lost.
thedarkonedearieParticipantI actually totally missed that movie. I caught the Dark Knight but somehow never got around to seeing Batman Begins. Though, I guess that the BB/Arrow connection makes sense. When Arrow began, Berlanti et. al wanted it to be BB-esque.
I actually think Batman Begins is better. Heath Ledger’s performance aside. Gotta watch it.
Are they turning Lee into Harley Quinn or just a bad guy? I heard Harley might be showing up in the finale. While I enjoy Morena Baccarin, I honestly don’t think she has the chops to pull off that character. The problem I have is that when they cast these women in these roles, it was for a good character, not a villain. Barbara worked out well. They got lucky that Erin Richards was able to pull off a juicy villain. But I just don’t see Morena being able to do that.
I liked seeing Fish Mooney again.
Isn’t it too early for Bruce to learn how to fight and become batman from Rha’s? He’s still way too young.
thedarkonedearieParticipantSo I finally binge watched Once Upon a Time in Wonderland this long weekend and one thought that I realized was this:
– While I enjoyed Naveen Andrews as Jafar, I do think Oded Fehr captured Jafar’s mannerisms better. If he had been the one who played him on Wonderland, I think people would have been less upset with him in Once. Not that Naveen was bad, bc he wasn’t and I enjoyed him a lot, it’s just Oded acted way more like Jafar in my opinion. It’s just a shame he wasn’t used in 6B at all.
Other notes on Wonderland (some pertaining to OUAT):
– First few episodes were just awful. It picked up and I found the final third to be quite good. It felt like they had a story in mind and it played out cohesively from beginning, middle, and end. Unlike in OUAT when it feels like the story always shifts midway through the half season.
– Jafar was great. Really loved his backstory. It’s almost a shame they wasted him on a spin off that didn’t last.
– I maintain that it’s very odd we got a wonderland spinoff and there was no mad hatter. If I was a fair weather fan watching it, I’d be pissed.
– Cora was amazing per usual.
– Am I the only one who couldn’t stand Alice? I really just didn’t like the casting. Although the story mostly involved Alice and Cyrus and their love story, I thought Ana and Will’s story was way more compelling.
– So I thought the fight sequences were so much better than what I’ve seen on OUAT lately. The battle between Amara and Jafar stands out. Like the mirror shards and the chandelier coming down. It felt like an actual fight. What on earth did we get from the Black Fairy? A lot of talking and then one poof of magic at Regina before getting run over by a car? Was their budget just more on Wonderland?
– How Jafar was defeated was so much better than Black Fairy (I’m comparing them bc both wanted to change the laws of magic). Black Fairy never even accomplished what she wanted and was defeated so easily by a dumb wand. Jafar succeeded and was outdone by something (a well) that at least was canon early on in the show. And he was defeated sort of in the same way as he was in the original movie. My goodness, it’s almost like it was planned from the beginning of the arc!
– So, did the writers just run out of ideas in OUAT bc they pretty much just rehashed the story from Wonderland. The end game was for the villain to try and change the laws of magic. It’s so lame now after seeing the same plan play out in Wonderland. And Wonderland just did it so much better bc the villain was successful. I would have liked Black Fairy to get the glowy eyes and have her fun for a bit.
– Loved Amara and her being Jafar’s staff. And then her being connected to Cyrus and his brother’s.
– Loved the scene where Jafar kills Ana. I didn’t think I would like them bringing her back to life but it was done based on what they established already on the show, not some dumb macguffin. And then Will and Ana’s kiss breaking the curse made sense.
– The rabbit looked good but otherwise the CGI as far as the sets go, was pretty horrible.
– Uhh the Jabberwocky. So cool. Another wasted villain on a one season spin off series. They made her really creepy and original.
– So the caterpillar was basically Jabba the Hut….
– So I get why people are mad that Ana wasn’t one of the stepsisters in the Cinderella episode in season 6. It was pretty clear that’s what they were hinting at multiple times in Wonderland.
– Amara was on Lost right? Totally realized that once she stepped on the screen.
– Also did they not take the creepy girl from The Ring and completely rip her off. Not complaining but wow that was so similar…and creepy.
– And since we are on creepy moments, how about people turning into trees. Jesus the weird carpenter was all sorts of creepy.
Basically, I can’t believe A&E gave us such a complete story with Wonderland that made sense and felt cohesive from start to finish, and then they gave us Season 6 of OUAT which felt all over the place with dropped story lines and anticlimactic villains who just talk and don’t act. However this is why I’m going to give season 7 a try. Season 7 will have mostly all new characters, like Wonderland. They no longer are going to be bogged down with old flashbacks that have the same thing happening which limits what they can do with those characters in the present. With a fresh story and mostly new characters, I think if they know this season is the last, we could potentially get a complete, original, cohesive narrative again. Not saying this will happen, but it could, and Wonderland gives me some optimism that A&E are in fact capable of pulling that off still with new characters. That alone, will compel me to give season 7 a try. But the leash is short.
thedarkonedearieParticipantOn the topic of Jerome, I think Cameron’s natural smile in S2 looked better than the Jack Nicholson-style makeup they gave him in S3.
I was never a fan of Nicholson’s makeup, outfit or how he portrayed the Joker. The Joker for me was always the best when he was darker and more twisted as opposed to silly and goofy.
