ParticipantCharacters are more interesting when they have flaws. Moreover, they are more interesting when these flaws are acknowledged because then it creates organic conflicts. The problem with Hook and Emma and their relationship and why it feels so forced is because the writers don’t want to acknowledge any flaws with these two, individually and together as a couple, and when they do drop something about Emma making mistakes throughout the season, we have Snow White denying that and talking nonsense about love or hope.
This is actually very true. We have seen Emma and Hook struggle, but not really as regular human beings. We got the dark one stuff but that didn’t really translate to just regular human flaws and characteristics. Sure they struggled this season with the DO stuff and then the UW and bringing Hook back. But I really feel like if they showed us some genuine struggle with just who they are as people, like with Rumbelle, we would find this couple way more interesting and relatable.

ParticipantSome Greek mythology is also extremely insane and unrealistic though. So certain stories, although more interesting, might have to be changed in order to fit better in the OUAT world.

ParticipantWhy on Earth did we not see this? Like why? Why did we not get this flashback? Was this something they changed midway too?
And yes bad mythology. But like OUAT always changes the stories around. That’s what made them unique and interesting to begin with. So it shouldn’t be a negative whenever they deviate from original mythology. It should be welcomed and expected. Who wants to see them rehash what we already know? They are at their best when they twist original stories and make them their own. I know Greek mythology is close to your heart RG, but this is what OUAT does.

ParticipantGosh this episode had so many flaws. Nygma getting out through a vent in his cell…please. More people taking knife wounds to the gut and living. Bruce and Alfred splitting up. All of a sudden I should care that Butch likes Tabitha….why? Haven’t seen any of this. Rehashing story lines with Galavan. Yuck. Firefly reveal…snooze. Let’s see some fish mooney.
Liked-
– Nygma is always great.
– Was that Killer Croc?
– Bruce friking ran over a guy with a car!
– A BAZOOKA. That is all. The music was darn right hilarious. But I kind of loved all of it. Penguin would know what to actually use to kill Galavan. Just showing up and being like, “Yeah you morons. Step aside. I’m back.” I kind of wished Penguin shot it instead of Butch but still, it was hilarious and awesome all at once.
Tonally this episode was all over the place. Entertaining still sure, but I honestly do not know where this roller coaster is going and we only have two episodes left.

ParticipantRight but if Regina’s story after the fact proves to be compelling and it leads us to her “true” happy ending, Robin dying won’t seem like a bad message at all. I’m just saying because we don’t know how this will affect the character or lead to other things, it’s too early to say if this is a bad message or not.

ParticipantThere are a lot of big problems but one of the biggest is that I don’t think the writers even know what their show is. They offer up platitudes about hope, love, family, and happy endings but everything they show is in direct contrast to that. How is Robin (and Neal) dying and leaving behind children about hope, love, family, and happy endings? How is Regina never getting to be reunited with her soul mate about hope? How is rewarding a murderer many times over with a second life for doing an over emphasized good work a message about redemption? The writers don’t actually sit with their broad themes and muse on them. They just put them out there as things that you’re supposed to be getting from their show but never pausing to actually consider if their narrative is an accurate reflection of that. It’s like…as long A and E keep giving their song and dance routine about hope, they believe you won’t notice the rooms on fire and there’s no water in sight.
Problem is they aren’t ready to end the show just yet, and they need drama. They can’t give everyone their happy ending and have all the hope finally pay off just yet. Then the show would be over. All of these themes should pay off in the end when everyone’s story has ended. But it’s a tough road in life and you gotta get there. I think it’s unfair to say that they are sending the wrong messages. Let’s see what the final message is when the show is done. If we get to the end of the show, and Regina is still alone and miserable, well yeah that’s a big problem considering what the show has preached all these years. But guys we aren’t there yet.

ParticipantSo is this supposed to be another realm they are in? I think the press release mentioned that they get taken to a twisted realm. So were they just using Vancouver for this realm? Maybe it’s not actually for NY.

ParticipantI actually think it’s a little intriguing.

ParticipantYeah it is understanding that they couldn’t get the actress, so some woman stands in and doesn’t say anything or something, maybe with her back turned before they go into the portal with Merida.
As far as magic in SB, ever since Gold brought magic to storybrooke in season 2, it’s had magic. The well has magic, hell there was a portal that opened in the pond to the UW. There is still the town line….and all the fairies still have magic. Plus all the magical trinkets in Gold’s shop. Since season 2, storybrooke has always been a town with magic, in a land without magic.

ParticipantYeah this all but confirms there was yet another plot change halfway through the season. So what is that….4 seasons in a row now? Can someone just enlighten me how that happens? Are they just bad writers? Are they ADD and can’t stick to one story line? Are they just really creative and constantly thinking of ways to make the story better and not realizing that even if new ideas are better than the original, it can still kill the flow of the story?
My guess is that when they heard they were getting renewed, they came up with the Jekyll and Hyde thing and wanted to go back to the destroying magic story line. Which caused them to come up with Regina drinking the potion to turn back into the EQ. And for that to really sink in and work, they needed Robin to be out of the picture. At least this time around we are getting actual characters from stories (Jekyll and Hyde) as opposed to Tamara and Greg. I feel like this could be a nice fit.
