Merida made it back to Storybrooke with everyone else when Hook cast the Dark Curse.  How Mulan and Ruby got to Oz wasn’t really explained.

However, if faced with that dilemma, then I’d expect them, as professional writers, to figure out how to best tell the Red/Dorothy story so that it felt organic and natural and not just dropped on to the screen at the last second. And then we’re back to screen time, the number of plot lines, the number of characters; so how so you tell so many single side stories (Rumbelle, Zades, Snowing and Baby Neal, Henry the Author) alongside the arc-plot (Hades, Operation Firebird) and have a Very Special Episode?

If it was Disney budding in, then they would have budded in awhile ago.  Which would have given the writers enough time to develop the new lgbt relationship, instead of just one episode.  It sucks that Disney may have thwarted the writers’ plans for Mulan, but there is no excuse for the lack of development of the Ruby Slippers relationship.

If anyone is interested in a live reaction to this episode from an LGBT couple then Bri and Alex of OSOTM do a great one. I will state: they aren’t happy. So please, be prepared for some fairly negative reactions. But, I think it’s important to hear from people within the actual queer community.

I can imagine many people in the queer community are not happy about this.  And you guys know, I will be first in line to defend the writers.  I simply cannot defend them on this one.

If Dorothy and Red return in some capacity to further develop this relationship, I could see myself coming around to this.  Barely…

So can you get rid of the darkness simply with true love’s kiss?  I mean we did see Rumple lose his scaly skin for a second when she kissed him before.  Maybe it’s that simply to get rid of the darkness.

Oh, and not to mention the nickname “Kansas” is so bad.  They didn’t develop Dorothy at all, so the only thing Red can think of is where she is from, which is hilarious.  How original Red…That’s literally the glaring beacon shining on how unrealistically fast this was.  Giving nicknames this early, in what really was only a kind-hearted friendship with some sort of connection that should be developed over a few episodes and then get to the TLK, was just silly.  Talk about forcing it down our throats.  They had to do the relationship now, so they had to come up with cute nicknames.  And because how poorly it was done, all the could come up with was Wolfie and Kansas, because that’s literally all they knew about each other.  Such an utter joke.

Yes why is Mulan even there if not for this? What was the point of bringing her back at all if she has no part to play in the LGBT ‘ship.

It felt so cruel to Mulan. and it seems history has repeated itself again with her.  I agree with Phee about why the relationship worked and how it was believable that they would find a connection with each other based on their upbringing and family history with animals and what not.  But even if all of this wasn’t rushed, I don’t understand why they would do this to Mulan all over again after she was crushed in season 2 after two different people found love after the same sleeping curse.  And if I was Jamie Chung, I most certainly would have been pissed and that tweet makes a whole lot of sense now.  What they have done with Mulan, who is quite a popular Disney princess with characteristics that really should and have resonated on this show, is just character assassination.  They clearly have no direction for her and don’t care to discover one.  I feel like she’s the only character on the show that has appeared in more than a few episodes and not gotten a flashback.  They botched this character through and through.  And from someone who really liked the Disney Mulan, and Jamie Chung’s version on Ouat, I can safely say I am utterly disappointed.

So despite Ruby Slippers being very rushed, was anyone else kind of pleased they got TLK so fast while CS still hasn’t?

    Actually, a little yes.

Yeah to me it has to be Emma.  Unfortunately Regina is getting swept under the rug this half season and really this whole season.  She will be important if a certain someone does kick the bucket, but it should be Emma who defeats Hades.

Yeah I feel like in order to wake her, he’ll have to either fully accept that he can only use the darkness for good, although not sure how they can show that and have it stick to work on TLK, or get rid of the darkness forever.  I am more inclined to think the latter will happen somehow and it will close out the DO saga.

If that’s so it makes me incredibly sad. It means that 1) Disney has a pretty limited definition of family and 2) they don’t understand their own mass universal appeal. I mean good god…how big is lgbt Disney fanbase. Imma go with massive.

It is quite disturbing indeed, which is why I want to believe it isn’t the case.  But once again, similarly to how season 5a switched gears, this felt like a major switch, and because the writers promised a LGBT relationship, they had to deliver it, even if they got a NO from Disney for Mulan.  So in pops Dorothy.  At least that’s how it felt to me.
