I had a really nice Rumbelle dream last night.
Rumple had flour on his suit and face, no idea why, he proposed to Belle and she said yes.
You should turn adorable dreams like these into prompts! XD
I’m imagining that he was trying to bake her a cake or something. Birthday? Just because?

ParticipantI think this may be an “eyes of the beholder” or a “as deep as you want it to be” situation. One of the great things about OUAT is that there are so many moments that raise doubt in the viewer’s eyes about exactly what is happening in a given character’s mind at any point in time. Rumple and Regina are the King and Queen of this. It is very difficult to pinpoint what is a power grab, and what is just an act of desperation , and what may even be an act of fear or misplaced devotion.
So what is going on in Gold’s head at this point in time. We know that he wanted to try and break the curse “the old fashioned way” and that led to a misguided attempt at courting Lacey. This led him to their current situation- what seems to be a fiery pairing with a woman drawn to a powerful and dangerous man. But what is Gold drawn to? Is it just that Lacey looks like Belle? Is the memory of his old love enough to keep his interest in this new woman? I don’t think he’s that stupid or that naiive.
To my way of thinking, a lot of things changed in “Manhattan”. Baelfire was (justifiably) enraged. He wanted nothing to do with his father. I don’t know how much Bae knew about exactly what Rumple had done to get to him (or if he would be moved by the tale) but that door pretty much slammed in Rumple’s face. If not for Henry (and the cloud of abandonment guilt that surrounds him)- Bae probably would never have bothered to have spoken to Emma and Gold again. There’s just so much anger. We see a little fissure erupt when Gold is on the brink of death, but it’s not enough to break down that wall.
So around the time that Bae begins to shut Rumple out, Lacey shows up. At this point, Gold has found his son again. He’s told his tale. He’s apologized. Centuries of work and magic have come to this- and if Neal refuses to speak with him or include him in his life, there is nothing Gold can do about it. It’s absolutely understandable that he would be at a loss. His entire reason for being has just fizzled out- as they say, not with a bang, but a whimper. There is often a sort of depression associated with the passing of a major event (weddings, graduations, births- even) where afterwards, the person involved is at a loss because their whole life up to that point was spent being dedicated to one goal and when the time passes, they don’t know what to do with themselves. Gold is having the 300 year version of that.
So what does he do? He grasps at straws*. He flounders around looking for anyone to connect with, anything that seems remotely real. Everyone else is wrapped up in their own problems and nobody seems interested in being involved with him (maybe Henry, but the grown ups aren’t in a hurry to let Grandpa babysit). At the end of Lacey, when he realizes he’s lost her it’s more than that. He’s lost the last person that he thought he could connect with. There’s more devastation there than just losing your true love. He’s gone through that before, but at least then he had his mission to turn back to. This time, there was no mission. He was alone.
So when Lacey seemed interested, even remotely, even with less than great intentions- he went for it. Not because she looks like Belle, maybe not even because he loves Lacey or is trying to get her to love him- but because for now, there is someone who wants to be with him and that’s enough.
Edited to add: I don’t know if the immortality chat was really meant to imply that Lacey wants immortality, or if it was just a way to bring up the prophesy again, but I do think that this is the only time we’ve seen Gold desperate enough to consider making someone immortal because he’s just that lonely at this point. Even in Lacey’s company he’s still alone because she doesn’t really know all of him, and perhaps can’t. There’s a lot to look at in that conversation, so I hope we at least touch on it in the finale instead of sweeping it under the rug. I think that if someone had suggested he make Belle immortal (and I say someone else, because I don’t think Belle would have ever asked or even wanted such a thing) he would have immediately thrown the idea out.
*Again with the puns? Get out.

Participant“Fables” seems to be a favorite of bookstore employees. I often saw it featured on the end cap in a “our favorites” display at Barnes and Noble. ^_^

ParticipantI don’t really have any local friends that are in to the show, so it looks like it’s me and my boy. Still, I might make some treats and take photos. I have a really cute dessert idea, maybe we’ll precede it with two burgers and two iced teas. ^_^

ParticipantI have to be honest, I’m not suuuuper sure that Lacey’s intentions are… shall we say “honorable” (for a given value of honor, that is). I wasn’t buying the “so we can be together forever” line, but this may very well have been the way I was reading the delivery and nothing more. It really seemed to me like she knew what buttons to push to get Gold to do what she wants.
She’s got Gold wrapped around her finger… as it were.
(I’ll see myself out now…)

Wait… what do you mean that ship has sailed? T_T
(But for real, well said. I really feel like overall OUAT is a super relaxed and respectful fandom, I hope to see more of that. Yay!)

This may not add anything new, but here’s my thought on the matter.
The promo shows Regina struggling to contain the explosion from the fail safe gem. She also says something to the effect of “I can't contain this much longer” or something. Well no, maybe *she* can't, but perhaps with a little help…
Cue Rumple to the rescue. Perhaps he makes the choice not to run off with Lacey (he can retain his memories outside of Storybrooke and Lacey already lost hers) but instead to save Storybrooke because of Henry and maybe a little bit of “YOU DID WHAT TO MY BAE!!????”
So perhaps Regina can't contain the explosion, but the two of them can? It would make a great parallel to when Gold and Regina were blocking the portal earlier this season. And goodness knows we like our parallels.
Maybe this drains him of his Dark One curse/powers somehow. Of course, I wonder if Lacey would in fact be interested in him if she knew he couldn’t grant her immortality etc. Angst angst angstI like this, but if I may add something? What if it's three people who control the explosion? Or rather, three people involved in all this. While Rumple and Regina are controlling the explosion (and him losing his powers..I like it), Emma is using her own magic to send everyone in SB to the EF. Rumple and Regina can't control the explosion forever, but they give Emma enough time to get everyone home. I still really think SB is going to go bye bye.
Very yes.
Actually that makes an even better parallel because instead of using magic to keep people from coming through a portal, they'd be teaming up to use magic to help people get through a portal. Yes. That. Let's do it.

ParticipantItem 1- Are “Dearies” a thing? Because I am interested and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Item 2- I like that you brought up Cora. I had a lot of idle time on a road trip this weekend to think about this week’s episode and I actually started comparing Lacey to Cora myself. I think this may actually be the thing that (if we had infinite time to get in to this subplot and explore it as much as we liked) would make the little light go off in Gold’s head that there is something fundamentally wrong and that no matter how much Lacey looks like Belle, she’s not and she’ll never do for him what Belle did. The one thing Belle never did was ask for anything. Her father made the plea for help and she paid cost. But as far as well know she has never asked Rumplestiltskin for anything for herself. (Maybe to spare someone else’s life etc.) The only thing she ever asked for was for him to believe her, to trust her.
So when Lacey asked for immortality, I was sort of blown away. Lacey wants something. It doesn’t matter why- Rumple has never had much luck with people who want something from him. At that point, it becomes just another deal.

ParticipantI don’t think Lacey is a villain per se. We have plenty of genuine villains running around, we don’t need a weaksauce baddie running around. Rather, Lacey is just a great example of contrasts to other characters and ways of thinking- especially those of the audience. I think that most viewers are probably really interested in magic and the stories that it creates (that’s why we’re watching after all), but this show has done a great job of teaching us why magic isn’t always so great. Lacey represents an interesting case if we just imagine her to be a regular girl. She doesn’t possess magic. She didn’t grow up with magic, but she’s been exposed to it, and she’s seen what kind of power can be harnessed when magic is used. She then (in direct contrast to the lesson the show has been presenting and indeed presented in this very episode) asks to have magic used for her benefit. Now true, Lacey hasn’t seen all the trials and tribulations that the characters have gone through over the last several years, and so she’s missed the memo about all magic coming with a price, but what that means is she’s a great “control group”. Lacey represents the idea that there are many people out there, who when confronted with magic power- would immediately want to seize and utilize it. Maybe not for bad reasons, maybe for ambiguous ones or even well intentioned ones, but still- there would be no hesitation.
So no. Lacey herself isn’t meant to be a villain. She’s just meant to provide a different perspective- namely that maybe Greg and Tamara aren’t entirely wrong in their mission to keep magic out of this world (and the hands of the population)
