Ok, I’m going to take this from a slightly more obscure angle. The story August added to the storybook was “The Golden Bird.” It is a story of three brothers being sent on a journey by their father to find and kill the golden bird (it was being a nuisance in his garden.) The youngest was the only one to return successful. The other two getting into trouble with women and wine at a tavern. He also seems to have an affinity for water (ordering water at Granny’s, the visit to the well.) There is a very similar folktale called “The Water of Life,” in which a king is dying and the only thing that will save him is the water of life, so he sends his three sons to find it. Again, it is only the youngest who returns and saves his father.
I don’t know if this has any bearing on who August is,or even the story as a whole, but I thought it was quite interesting. Could just be a red herring for us folklore nerds 😆

I think Rumpel has an array of different reasons for creating the curse. To defeat Regina, to become someone else, to break his own curse, to find someone who he lost. God only knows how many reasons Rumpel has for creating the curse.
I think Rumpel has multiple reasons for doing anything. Such as when he traded the info about Snow’s whereabouts for Charming’s cloak. He primarily wanted it for Charming’s hair, but he probably wasn’t lying when he said his castle was drafty and that did look like a nice, warm cloak.

Rumpelstiltskin does seem to toy with all the other characters. Offering deals with sometimes stupid returns… like a cloak, or a hair… but he does seem to always know what’s coming… so much so that he intercepts it. It’s like he knew cinderella was going to imprison him, but he still did it, provided that one day she’ll pay the price anyway. Probably he thought it still worth it.
His fascination with children obviously comes from the fact that he loved his boy dearly, and realises that children are the strongest bargaining chip for his deals. And it’s funny how he places the right kids at the right place, like Emma’s son. It’s obvious he set things in motion by doing that.
But Evil is made, not born, as is clear with this character – his hardships and losses turned him evil, but I do hope that at the end he will have his happy ending by finding belle… which i’m sure the queen is keeping as leverage against him… oh yes… probably that’s why regina wanted to know if Gold remembers he’s rumpel… otherwise, Belle would be useless…
I would see no reason as to why he would loose his dagger… Mr. Gold has keepsakes from everyone’s story, and when he became the Dark One, he had the Dagger in Hand, so he wouldn’t really loose it would he? knowing how precious it was to his life… But I guess we’ll find out.
I also hope we get to know why Gold and Regina clashed in the beginning and how they became rivals… is it just a feud for Power? would be stupid if that were the case as Regina and Rumpel are the 2 deepest characters there are in the series.
I do have some questions though:
1. Why did Rumpelstiltskin give Regina the Dark Curse in the First Place
2. How was he protected to remember the previous life? does this mean he is in fact stronger than Regina?
3. And what’s in a Name? What is this thing with names and Rumpel? The story states that who knows Rumpel’s name will have power over him, and in the beginning the guard informs snow white not to give rumpel their name as he will have power over them… really? It seems to me that EVERYONE knows rumpel’s name, and he knows everyone’s… how does it really give power? Did they just mention it in the series to stick to the original tale… they should show us how it matters… the names and stuff… cause I’m lost…In any case, I do not think he is truly evil.
If he where he would have killed belle, not let her go, and him being the strongest being in all the land, he doesn’t kill for no reason, he just toys around and makes deals. seems like a mischievous character like puck or loki… the trouble maker…But whichever the case,
Rumpelstiltskin is surely the most intriguing character in Once Upon a Time 🙂
I’d like to try and tackle your third question, what’s in a name? One of the oldest and most powerful magics in fairy tales is that of possessing someone’s true name. It’s where the phrase “signing your life away” comes from. In the real world, by signing your name on a document: mortgage, job, credit card receipt or whatever, you are handing over a small bit of control to someone else over your life. You are binding yourself to an agreement…or a deal. 😉 In the magical realms it goes even deeper. Possessing another’s name means you can completely control them, make them do your bidding. You can call angels down from heaven or demons up from hell and force them to do anything you want. There is a catch though. You can’t just call out Rumpelstiltskin and have him at your command. You must know the name’s true pronunciation with exact precision. You must know each inflection perfectly, the exact rise and fall of each syllable, which letters to emphasize and how much to emphasize those letters. It is truly an exact science. As long as Rumpel doesn’t tell how to exactly and correctly pronounce his name, he can tell it to anyone without fear. That’s also why in the first episode, when he meets Emma for the first time, he speaks her name very deliberately, letting the syllables roll around on his tongue (though whether he knows the true pronunciation or not, I don’t know.)
In the same vein, possessing someone’s hair (or blood or fingernail or even saliva) can be used for powerful and controlling magic. By possessing a piece of someone you basically have a direct magical line to the person. You can use it as a tracking device, sew it onto a voodoo doll and create all sorts of havoc or in Rumple’s case combine it with the hair of the person’s soulmate and create true love in a bottle.
I hope that helps answer your question.
Class dismissed. Thank you for attending Magic 101 😆
weebeastieParticipantI, for one, am eager to hear what tales Rumple will tell once he starts his therapy with Archie.
weebeastieParticipantAlso, I read an interview a while back with the producers of the show. They said that Rumple is not totally evil and that he does have some light and humanity in him. It will become more evident as the show progresses. Very few of the characters are completely good or evil, but many shades of gray.
weebeastieParticipantThe Dungeons? I didn’t even consider that as a possibility. That’s would be very interesting. However, Regina needs to be very watchful of the nurse and the janitor who know about Belle. There’s always the possibility that they could be spies or looking for a way to escape themselves.
My hubbie and I were talking about that yesterday and he commented that the nurse and the janitor looked like a couple of the folks who were with EQ when she cast the circle to initially enact dark curse. (I’ll have to go back and double check that.) If that is the case, they offered bits of themselves in return for a life of luxury and power, which apparently they didn’t get. It will be interesting to see what part they have to play, if any at all.
weebeastieParticipant@Pandora’s Imp, I got caught up yesterday. I can hardly wait for the next episode! April 22 seems so far away…*pout*. Oh well, I’ll try to distract myself with my other t.v. addiction (Game of Thrones).
@DanielJLewis, Thanks for the welcome! I’m glad to find myself in good company here 😀weebeastieParticipantHello from a fellow newbie and Mr.Gold fan!
weebeastieParticipantYeah, it would definitely make for an interesting twist. On the one hand, EQ would have Rumple in a stranglehold. On the other, depriving Belle of all emotion could be the one thing that kept her sane through nearly 30 years of solitary confinement.
weebeastieParticipantHello all! Newbie jumping in. I have to agree with most of the folks here. I think Rumpel’s discovery of Belle will be epic and I fully expect to need lots of tissues. But I was struck by a thought, what if EQ has Belle’s heart in one of her little boxes? All she would have to do is squeeze…how do you think that would affect Rumpel?
