Does any remember if the book was damaged when they showed the Stranger take it a couple of episodes ago? Is it possible that the stranger was just fixing the book?

He just did a new binding, hough leaving the old cover so Henry and Emma wouldn’t get suspicious (I study publishing, so I learned how to do that 😉 ). Don’t know if he made a copy for himself while doing it, but I don’t think so. I think he somehow is the caretaker of the book, making sure it is conserved.
August may have an agenda thogh. We still don’t know who he is in FTL.
February 20, 2012 at 10:17 am #137417nonnieParticipantI think he added pages / continue / rewrote some of the pages. He aged the pages then restored it.
1/ Maybe it is job in life to keep the book intact. If the book gets damaged he is compelled to put it to rights.
2/ He knows the book is enchanted and is trying to give it a new ending or his own twist on the stories.STILL mulling this over but I think it will be important in the future.
February 20, 2012 at 3:39 pm #137424indyandmarionParticipantHmm. Who he is in FTL remains a mystery, obviously. (I say he might be connected to Rumple, but is against him?)
I believe that he is here to protect the book. That he ultimately is working on the good side. Knowing now that he has the ability to fix the book, maybe he has created a back up? I feel that the book will be destroyed, for good, by the season’s end. So when he had the book, he created a duplicate. I’m not sure if that will effect things in using a duplicate though.
February 20, 2012 at 3:50 pm #137426starrydreamerParticipantIt looks like he was making a copy of it. The process he was doing it is like how one would make a copy of a photograph before the digital era. Apparently he was copying the story of Snow White and Rose Red, specifically the part where they cut the dwarf’s beard off. This was just recently released in some promo shots for an upcoming episode where they are cutting Grumpy's beard.
I’m curious to know if Henry spots anything different in the book.
February 20, 2012 at 4:09 pm #137447hjbauParticipantWouldn’t he just take photos of the book if he wanted a copy or make a photocopy with a machine. I mean this is 2012 and even if it is 1983 instead he could still take photos.

But, if you’ve got someone who is bent on destroying the book (For instance, Regina), making a second true duplicate and sending her off on the trail of what she believes to be the real book and letting her destroy it. Meanwhile the real one is safe.
He has his typewriter, which to me means he can change/add things as he sees fit and. Taking a photo of something that you’re trying to duplicate isn’t the best way because in photos, you look certain details. With having the real thing, you could take even a loupe to the book and see the smallest crease in the spine. If I were going to duplicate something, I’d rather have the original on hand to help with the process.
February 20, 2012 at 4:47 pm #137457hjbauParticipantBut i am not sure that Regina is trying to destroy the book. She had it that one time in Ep 2 was it and she gave it back to Henry. I was just saying that if the information is what is important and not the actual book then taking photos would work fine especially good quality photos.
February 20, 2012 at 5:09 pm #137459indyandmarionParticipantIf we take into account that Regina does in fact know who she is/what she did (Its up for debate on if she does or not). Reality seems to believe (This isn’t dealing with the show at all) that adults seem to forget/not believe in fairy tales as children do. Back to the show, Regina could be in a situation where she thinks this book is just fantasy (When we know it is true) and isn’t really concerned with it.
Now, going back to the “Regina knows who she really is” topic. If it hits her that “Oh crap, this book is giving away secrets that I can’t allow Henry to know about”, she probably would set out to destroy it. I know if something were to put my plans/perfect world in danger, I’d try to destroy it.
February 20, 2012 at 9:42 pm #137466Daniel J. LewisKeymasterI don’t think the book was damaged in any way. He retrieved it from Henry’s castle before the place was torn down. And when we saw him the first time with the book, he had to cut the lock for the case that was still protecting the book. The most it had was some dirt on it.
Even when Emma picked it up off the street, wasn’t it dry inside the case?
