ParticipantHaha maybe this is A&E’s way of doing a reboot
A reboot to correct the last reboot? Even that wouldn’t win back fans who were alienated after S3a.

So I decided that 401 with Neal would have gone mostly the same, but instead of Hook pestering Emma, Neal would have been understanding and kind and sympathetic and told her to take her time and get her bearings. And when Emma said have patience, he wouldn’t have made an off hand comment about being patient until a monster came and killed him. Neal would have understood.
And that’s how 401 would have gone if Neal hadn’t been killed.
So sad. They wrote Neal with so much good character and integrity. The message they are sending now is just sad. And junior highish unfortunately. Wah wah wah, whine whine whine. No patience and understanding. Coming from a person who has experienced both the extremely impatient SO and now married to one of the most patient, kind, understanding men I have ever met… i am SO grateful I saw the light. JustSeeing the impatience on this show makes me sad. I didn’t realize what I could have. So I just hate to see that glorified.

Hook comes across like a self-centered sophomoric teenage boy. It’s about immediate gratification. No wonder Henry and Hook seem to get on so well. Hook has the emotional intelligence of an immature teenage boy.
Sometimes Emma seems to be emotionally stunted as well. According to JMo, from an excerpt from the Once Upon a Time Official Souvenir Magazine No.1
“I have always felt like Emma is an overgrown teenager. Whenever I don’t know what to do with her, I think ‘what would a 14-year-old boy do?”
Behold, suddenly Emma’s taste in men makes sense. No wonder she and Hook are “soul mates.” Both can act quite childish. She’s also a self-professed lost girl, an orphan. She’s trying to make adult decisions, but her judgements are impacted by her own lack of emotional maturity. Now Emma is left with a guy who whines, whom she must kiss to make him be quiet. I wonder if Emma is starting to get a wakeup call. (I know, wishful thinking).

ParticipantWatched 401. Survived. (43 to go!) It wasn’t as bad as I had feared it might be, so there’s that.
I actually had more trouble with the recap before the show, since they had to actively go out of their way to exclude him from that. Roomie posed the excellent question of, if they’re going to acknowledge him in the show, why work so hard to exclude him from the recap? It’s all so odd.
Overall, it felt like Once again, so I’ll take it. It seems that so long as I avoid spoilers and interviews – especially interviews – and tumblr, I can handle still watching the show. Since it’s supposed to be “roommate bonding time” in our household, I am trying desperately to still be able to watch the show – that and, you know, it was my freaking favorite show until 3B. I’d really like to still be able to watch it!!
ETA: Forgot to say that I’m actually really interested in the “who wrote the book” story. I figured after its reappearance in MM’s closet and rewriting of itself in 322, the book was kind of its own entity and perhaps a part of the curse, so to hear that they are re-visiting the author angle is intruiging to me. I am pretty much spoiler free so maybe there’s more info on this but I am perfectly happy not knowing 😉
Cause this story needs some mending & a better happy ending...

KeymasterThe Recap was HORRIBLE. I mean…HORRIBLE.

ParticipantAn interesting essay on What’s the Point of Hook? –an analysis from “The Jolly Roger”. It was spot on in its prediction.
We didn’t really need this proof that Hook does not have Emma’s best interests at heart, but it does prove something else: there isn’t enough time and space in Once for a Hook redemption arc. Meanwhile his function as the not-right-for-Emma plot device kind of works. He puts her in danger because his desires are selfish.
It was the case that the curse born of Hook’s selfish vow robbed Emma of her true love magic. Hook’s selfish desires are a threat to Emma, and arguably, to others. For if it hadn’t been for Regina’s magic, then no one would have been able to stop Zelena, since Emma was rendered useless. As long as Hook is around to have his lips cursed, he poses a risk to Emma and her special status as savior. Better pray Regina keeps her head on straight, since it seems Emma has sort of lost hers to the pining pirate.

Because they’re hoping that Frozen will earn them a crapload of new viewers (and judging by the ratings, mission accomplished), and they don’t want said new viewers to get bogged down in wondering if there could have been some other guy Emma loved that would have made for a better story, they just want them to see the beautiful. blossoming relationship between her and Hook and accept it no questions asked. So assuming those potential new viewers were also watching the recap show, it makes sense to erase Neal and talk up CS, and then in the actual episode, when they did address Neal, it wasn’t at all in relation to Emma.

I noticed that Emma told Hook to be patient. If I thought they were doing that to cause some actual character development for Hook instead of just using it as a device to draw out the angst a bit more, I’d have liked that line. Dear Hook, persistence and patience are NOT the same thing.
