Hook: “I loved you”So Hook liked breaking down her walls? In other words, he only liked the thrill of the chase. That is in no way romantic (although many CS fans probably saw it that way). He liked being made to feel like a man around Princess Emma — the hero with his trophy girlfriend dressed in pink. It was really about him and his ego. He “loved” Savior Swan when he saw her as a prize to be won. Now that she’s no longer up on some shiny pedestal, he’s through with her just like that? Even though Emma wanted that cutlass, I actually think Emma was speaking from the heart and being emotionally honest in this scene. Her heart was open, and she is still someone just looking for unconditional love, which Hook doesn’t give her. He doesn’t really love Emma, which is the real reason why TLK failed.

LITERALLY threw a pillow at my screen last night with this CLAPTRAP. I…*shakes in anger* can’t even. For a man to say this out loud and still be thought a hero and is going to “get the girl” in the end I….*HULK FEMINIST OUT*

They aren’t aware. They are writing the way media has been written for a long time and aren’t really listening to the criticisms that people are beginning to notice and pick up on. To them, this is just how you tell a romance on TV

Yeah, no, alas they are oblivious, they just think they’re writing an epic love story, or something.
I almost thought I’d mis-heard the line about how he liked breaking down her walls, because surely the writers couldn’t be THAT stupid to have him say that? The fact that Jane is the one who wrote this ep makes it even more perplexing and disheartening that that line ever existed!
I like to pretend that Jane was taken over by the same Pod People who took over Emma Swan.

Ok, so hearing that dialogue, my jaw literally dropped. My first instinct is to climb up on my feminist soapbox and marvel at the degree to which Hook is essentially written as an entitled frabtoy with a savior complex. I mean, safe for a bed sheet toga and a box of flunitrazepam, I’m not sure he can possible come across as any more of a “rapey” narcissist.
On the other hand, are the writers really not aware of what they’re doing? Surely, this is their way to show some ambivalence towards Hook’s feelings for Emma (and rock the CS boat so that it’s not all smooth sailing for that particular ship). This episode is written by Jane Espensen, and while I’m not super impressed with her latest writing choices, I think she actually knows what she’s doing in terms of writing this sort of underlying patriarchy.

Unless Jane has developed a secret hatred of OUAT, and is essentially sabotaging it from the inside? Now, what I really don’t get is the way that the audience is cheering Hook in this dialogue. I mean, he’s clearly being pretty despicable! Am I missing something?
