ParticipantYes. And this is what we mean when we talk about how Emma isn’t a strong woman anymore. It’s not saying that having a boyfriend means losing your “strong woman” characteristic. It’s that your entire being and story center around him. That without him you cannot be more than what you already are–and of course, what you are is fragile, lonely, and wounded in some way.
OUAT in a nutshell:
This gif made me laugh/cry. This past half season was supposed to be about Emma and her struggle to overcome the darkness — not Hook’s! Moreover, Merlin, arguably the only really good guy (other than Charming) who happened to be black, got murdered by the 18th-century white guy. Yep. Way to be forward-thinking and representative.

ParticipantIt bothers me that they give Hook so much credit for “breaking Emma walls”, this is completely idiotic cause it means that none of the other characters in her life – her parents, Henry and their love weren’t strong Enough to allow her to open herself up to them. They give way too much credit to Hook. Emma “broke her walls” with Henry when she talked about her childhood, Emma “broke her walls” with Mary Margaret when she saw she was lonely as much as she was, Emma “broke her walls” with Ashley, Ava and Nicholas when she saw they were in the same situation as she was and she didn’t want them to go through it alone like she did.

ParticipantSo Emma isn’t lonely because everyone needs a community, it’s because she has Walls™ around her soft and vulnerable ego, which our dashing rogue must break through in order to rescue the damsel from the fortress of her own making,

Sweet Oz, this!
I think at the end of the day, we all wonder….had it not been for Emma Swan, what could Hook contribute to the storyline had he not been her so called “true love”…what is his purpose besides being the love interest?
To show that even Adam and Eddy had no idea, they took what should have been Emma’s solo storyline and gave it to Hook at the last second, showing that in order to give him some form of relevance besides love interest, they have to steal their original main character’s plots and give it to him. And they did it in such an icky way, I couldn’t help but wince from episodes nine through eleven. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact he felt no Dark One symptoms that entire time!
Don’t get me wrong, I felt the same way about Robin Hood. Had he not been Regina’s soul mate, what could he contribute to the storyline otherwise than being the love interest? And once again…they did it in such an icky way, having him impregnate Zelena to now have to be the father to a child that he had conceived out of the most vile way possible. So now although he still has a storyline besides being Regina’s soul mate, it’s so icky that we squirm while watching it.
Another example of Adam and Eddy trying to make Hook relevant at the expense of other characters are Snowing….the ENTIRE summer, they hyped Snow White and David to be at the frontlines in saving their daughter. “I will not lose my daughter to darkness.” Sorry to break it to you Ginny sweetie, but ABC & the show runners had you and Josh running around in circles, complaining and whining the entire trip in Camelot, and the one second you two had where you had cornered Arthur was snatched away because of some magic dust and then you were back to doing nothing to save Emma from being the Dark One. Every scene in Camelot seemed to be either CaptainSwan or SwanQueen baiting.
I guess my main frustration with Hook besides him being the most probable reason Neal was really killed off, is that I no longer see any purpose for him besides being Emma’s “true love”. And geez luis Adam and Eddy, if you’re gonna shove CaptainSwan down our throats, at least give us a sedative by making Hook both relevant and likable.

I don’t know who that is. Who’s Henry?!
Henry Henry Henry. I can’t stand how the show has dismissed him as relevant to Emma’s story. HE broke her walls. HE was the one who really changed her heart. It wasn’t Neal. It wasn’t Hook. To lesser extents, yes, we can talk about MM and the grand town of SB and its inhabitants who adopted the little orphan girl…BUT IT WAS HENRY. HENRY.

YES. And Snowing did absolutely nothing.

100% This is so true!
What plot contribution do you get with Hook and Robin when Emma and Regina are out of the equation?
All magic comes with a price!

Participantbut if you don’t like reading about Hook and CS being dumped on here, then I encourage and ask that you ignore it.
Oh I had no issues reading about the criticism of Hook. I find it interesting. That’s why I responded to them. I was simply offering another view on it. Not a personal view, like I’m trying to attack you, simply more of a devil’s advocate view if you will.

They really need to go back to this. even I can see that Hook was shoved down our throats and Henry has been put by the wayside, even though it was Henry who “saved” Emma.

This is so brilliant.
To show that even Adam and Eddy had no idea, they took what should have been Emma’s solo storyline and gave it to Hook at the last second, showing that in order to give him some form of relevance besides love interest, they have to steal their original main character’s plots and give it to him. All THIS.
Though, as a possible counterpoint, I personally would have been Ok if Hook and Robin didn’t really have any significant part in moving the plot forward. In fact, if they were just a love interest, this could have been a really radical way of representing gender and romantic relationships in the media. Say, if Robin was mostly busy with his own thing — I don’t know, raising Roland, installing Port-o-potties in the woods for the merry men — and they would show Regina meeting up with him for simply down time, conversation, and emotional support. As a partner with whom she could talk through her challenges, but who also had his own, albeit not earth-shattering thing going, as opposed to just arm candy. Or Zelena’s baby daddy. This could have been fantastic, and if the writing were done well, it could really fit the show’s theme of family.
What’s so offensive about the way the writers handled both stories is that obviously the male counterpart couldn’t possible be a “passive” character. Or even play second fiddle. Nope. They had to take center stage, in the case of Hook by literally stealing Emma’s character development, and in the case of Robin, by not-so-subtly reasserting his “male prowess” as capable of impregnating Zelena. Seriously, the whole Zelana/Robin plot feels to me like Adam and Eddy (and the rest of the writing team) are jumping up and down going “Look! He’s a man! He’s not been emasculated by Regina the boss lady! It’s ok! He’s got all the parts that matter!”
Oy. And then there’s CS. It’s no secret I’ve no love lost for Hook, and I very much liked Neal. But I think beyond this, there’s another issue with CS, and that’s the structural mismatch that I think maybe progressively led to where we are now. It’s a combination of who Emma is as a character, who Hook is as a character, and who they are to each other that makes it just a train wreck, in my opinion.
I think there were two potential Emma pairings in OUAT that were actively awful. Everything else might have been preposterous (say, Emma/Archie), a bit fraught (Emma/Jefferson), or perfectly fine without being groundbreaking (Emma/Graham). Anyway, the only two horrible choices in my opinion were Emma and Hook, and Emma and Gold/Rumple. And they’re horrible for very similar reasons. I think if people think “Emma/Gold” is pretty darn icky, the same should be said of Emma/Hook.
Good screen chemistry a healthy pairing do not make.
