KeymasterHowever, what they might not be aware of is how problematic it is to just then sweep those concern under the rug in the name of “forgiving one’s self” (as if that makes up for murdering Merlin or trying to send Emma’s son and parents to hell). *sigh*
I think that’s a better way to put it. Maybe in their minds because this is such a heightened sense of drama, larger than life situation that it gets heavily romanticized. “Look at all the danger and things these two have to go through! Isn’t it romantic how these two keep having to overcome the most intense obstacles!” But they fail to see how it’s disturbing on a very real level because when you take out the heightened drama, it’s really the story of a sociopath and a selfish woman who cares for nothing but her own romantic life to the point where she’s actively calling a murderer a hero without any effort on his part to atone.
The heightened drama/romanticized idea can be applied the to some recent Rumbelle stuff (cf: the Baby Rumbelle thread). Heck, it could be applied to just about any couple on the show, I guess.

Adam and Eddy focus only the drama that can keep their couples apart! Do they not understand that there can be drama their couples face and overcome together rather than just splitting up all the time? Even in soap operas, the couples don’t break up this much or have as many obstacles trying to keep them from being together!

KeymasterI think back to S1 and there was no lack of drama but it was a great balancing act between the high drama of evil queens and magic and the more mundane drama of a young woman coming to a strange town, mother/son drama, family and friends drama. The show wouldn’t be this show without the high drama that involves magic and archetype hero/villain but it often feels like that *all* the drama is now. There are no quiet moments for anyone. And without the quiet, there’s no way to temper the larger-than-life drama that is so all consuming.

I just rewatched “Hat Trick.” THAT’S the show I miss.

Hat Trick is a great example. You have the off-the-wall nuttiness of a spinning hat and doors within said hat, but you also have those beautiful quiet moments with Jefferson and Grace.
And probably my very favorite Emma/MM interaction in S1 (if not the entire show after the memories are restored): “I cannot lose that. I cannot lose my family.” Like that moment is so understated but my god it’s powerful. It’s pretty much the first time, since Neal as we’ll later learn, that Emma actually felt like she had a family and the dramatic irony of knowing that this woman, this MM, is literally Emma’s family…oh god. It’s powerful.
(also, writing the above and having to talk about Emma a lot last night on the podcast and her now pod-selfish nature, I really realize…I miss her. I miss Emma Swan. I miss her balancing act of strength and fragility; I miss her being a seeker of justice and tentative hopeful believer; I miss when the most important thing in the world was just spending an afternoon with Henry, eating fries before school.)
(I’m feeling nostalgic today. Must be the infection that’s taken up residence in my lungs)

ParticipantI went on this huge rant about Neal and the show a few days ago with a friend. I don’t know if I’ve ever talked about it here, but I’m actually in film school right now (I moved across the country to get a MA in Film and TV Production) and Eddy and Adam were huge inspirations for me–which was part of the reason I was so incredibly hurt by what they did with Neal and the show. I really believed it was something special and that they were doing something different with the story telling. I’m so tired of all the grim fatalism in television that’s out there, Once was a breath of fresh air to me.
On a lighter note, ‘Devil’s Due’ inspired my most indulgent side, and I actually wrote Once fic again for the first time in years. IT’S TOTALLY RIDICULOUS BUT THERE YOU GO: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6422305

They tossed their vision aside for popularity and ratings.

ParticipantI may be an overly optimistic fool, but I am stubbornly holding on to this straw of hope. that twitter message that Adam sent years ago

@biancalxxo how do u know im not stringing along CS? How do u know what I’m doing? Mwah hahhahahahhaand this is why I don’t care WHAT spoilers say about CY because now that they are already talking about “dead is not dead if the author and the quill are alive in the underworld” and they can bring back Neal *SQUEEEEEEEEEE*
I am sorry for being such an optimist but I have been this way since 3×15! when they went back in time I was SURE they will bring Neal back with them. but now I have even more reason for being happy… HENRY wants to be in charge! there is hope, there MUST be.by the way, am I the only one who cringes whenever the heroes tell Hook what they are planning to do? I always feel so scared because my head canon is that Hook the the betrayer and anything they tell him will be sabotaged because he will go behind their backs… I just cant help it, I literally flinch whenever he knows about something important that they plan to do.

ParticipantI just feel like they would only bring Neal back if he became Emma’s love interest again. And even if they did kill off Hook, and MRJ’s scheduling worked, and they somehow were able to revive the character in a non-ridiculous sort of way, I still don’t think it would work. They have come too far. Emma has grieved, and she has loved again. I just don’t realistically see Emma falling back into Neal’s arms, especially after Hook’s death. They could bring Neal back and keep Hook, but I don’t see that happening either. I would love Neal back, and it would certainly surprise a lot of people who said they only killed Neal for the ratings, but I just don’t see it happening. And I’m all about the hope on this show….

I’d be willing to just pretend like the last two seasons never happened if they brought Neal back. Apparently I have an unhealthy relationship with this show that I’m that forgiving of it, but Neal’s death ruined Rumple’s character AND Emma’s character. He was the lynchpin that made both of them work and they blew it AND I WANT THOSE CHARACTERS TO WORK.
I also really miss Emma and Gold’s weird mentor-protege thing, which in the era of Hook seems to have gone the way of the Buffalo.
However, this is all clearly never going to happen, so it’s just me with my Genie wishing away, haha.
