ParticipantI love that Once’s Captain Hook is different from previous portrayals. I’ve never viewed the character of Hook as “sexy”.
It used to be when I thought of Hook, he was exactly how Emma described him in Quite the Common Fairy. That cliche interpretation just wasn’t sexy.
But more than that, I love how layered Hook is here on Once. He’s like Rumple where we’ve seen him at different stages of his life and each phase, he has a different personality.
I don’t think I would enjoy the character as much if he was the same pirate we knew from Disney. He’d still be fun to watch but I don’t think Captain Swan wouldn’t have caught on as it did.

Participantobisgirl:
I had a thought about season two, if Colin hadn’t broken his leg what the story would have been like. With the introduction of Neal as Emma’s baby daddy, we probably would have gotten some sort of love triangle. And I remembered, we sorta of had a very brief love triangle in the Enchanted Forest with Aurora/Phillip/Mulan and I wonder if that was meant to parallel Neal/Emma/Hook in some manner?
What do you guys think?Agreed, I think they had to scale back Hook’s role in the storyline a great deal, in fact I think most of what we got in 3a, was supposed to happen in the back half of S2.

ParticipantI would think the adjustments for Hook after Colin broke his leg were more time related than character or plot related ( though I hate to use both of the words Plot and Character any more because of the rabid excuses delusionally spewed by anti Hook crusaders to try and explain why every OUAT should be 100% Neal driven)
“Time” meaning they put off a bit what they wanted to do, time wise, but not story wise.
I feel they had the premise of everything Hook laid out quite plainly in their minds regarding who Hook was becoming and how he was going to get there. It would have been great to see Bae/Hook reactions…if Bae had been portrayed decently as an adult. But that didn’t come to be. I still don’t see the brooding, dark little boy in surfer dude Neal at all. I don’t think Neal had much of anything to do with Hook during season 2. Hook was still driven by raging revenge against Rumple.
For me, the two grown men didn’t even exist in the same brain cels for Emma. Neal was all past/pain/resentment/anger and Hook was all present/future/avoiding emotions, sass and whacking him on the head (ha)
Good lord, I can quote now!!!!!!!! YAAAAAAAAY!!!!
Now back to business -I agree- esp with the time point you make, it’s what I feel as well.
I think we would have seen Hook progress character wise, to the point he was at in 3b, during the back half of S2 had Colin not broken his leg. Which is why I think they had Hook chill out a lot in back half of S2 (they couldnt get Colin on screen enough to redeem Hook’enough’ in time for where he needed to be for S3 otherwise).Found this on Eala’s tumblr. She needs to get back here!!!
I don’t have any words……..
…….BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is friggn hilarious!
Hook apologising to Belle was a must do in order to get me to like him. I liked his apology, I’ve seen complaints about it being insincere but I disagree, it was an in-character apology from a character who openly admitted a few episodes before that he doesn’t apologise often. The fact that he did apologise says a lot. I liked that Belle accepted it without rolling over, it showed she wasn’t a push over. Hook isn’t a sappy person therefore a sappy apology wouldn’t suit him. I don’t think his apology was just a show for Emma, Belle called him out in front of people, he probably felt uncomfortable because he knew he was in the wrong with what he did to Belle, and knowing you’re in the wrong in front of people is a very uncomfortable and awkward situation.
I agree with this, it was totally in character for both characters & while yes, I think Emma did have ‘words’ with Killy about clearing the air with Belle before they went to see her (I’m sure Killy would have pointed out he’d caused her harm in the past, so he’d unlikely be ‘welcomed’ into Gold’s store by Belle), Emma didnt “Force” him to appologise, he chose to, which as you say he doesnt do often, so should be taken for what it is supposed to be- Sorry.
The “people only like Hook because he’s attractive” argument holds no weight because, whilst he is easy on the eyes, that alone is not enough to make you like a character (also practically all of the male cast members on the show are attractive in some way (Rumple and Hook are constantly voted as the top 2 sexiest, most handsome, etc males on the show). Attractiveness alone is not enough to make you like a character. The best example to use is David and James. Both are played by the reasonably handsome Josh Dallas, yet you don’t hear anyone saying “OMG James is so hot!!! He should’ve been the centre of the show because he’s so attractive.” You mostly hear “James was a bit of a douchebag”. Hook has fans because of his personality which has improved considerably since his introduction.
YEP! *Nods in agreement*
Some CS fans have claimed that Hook has demonstrated “real love” for Emma because he still stuck by her even when she was verbally abusive to him in 3B. However I disagree with that opinion. 1. Emma hasn’t been verbally abusive towards Hook. She’s been blunt (she has her father’s tact) and whilst it was a bit harsh her saying that Zelena should’ve cursed the lips of someone she actually intended to kiss (Hook was stood right there Emma you could’ve been a bit less blunt on that matter), Emma never set out to deliberately hurt Hook’s feeling or diminish his self-esteem or sense of self-worth. 2. IF Emma had been abusive towards Hook, then why would you route for that sort of relationship for your favourite character? Why wouldn’t you want him to find someone else who treated him with respect and deserved him instead of someone who abused him? An abusive relationship is not “real love”.
Yes, I have to agree with you here as well- Emma was not abusive towards Hook, she was more than a little cruel in her harshness towards him on more than one occasion, but girl had her walls up trying to distance herself from him & everyone else she knew in SB to try ‘protect herself’. Was she ‘mean’ yes, but I dont consider her abusive o.O
Also agree that its more than a little twisted (thinking wise), to consider someone putting up with or sticking out, even verbal abuse as proof of ‘real/true love’ 🙁 Oats, Neal’s treatment of Emma is what sunk SF for me, if Emma did that to Killy (or vise versa), with such a poor, butt backward, lame excuse, I seriously doubt I could ship them either. It kind of sickens me to think there are people out there saying stuff like that.I am interested to see how CS progresses next year. They’ve gone past the will they won’t they phase so now the writers need to give CS some actual storylines as a couple. Hopefully we’ll get a new set next year of Emma and Henry’s new apartment, Hook may not live there permanently but he’ll probably have his own toothbrush.
YES! Can it be S4 yet!?!

LMAO – Night at the Roxbury
Oh, poop! whatever it was has been removed 🙁
A&E didn’t give Neal much character depth from day one, which is not MRJ’s fault. But even so, as charming as he was in appealing to teenaged Emma, I felt he mailed in his performances in Neverland and some of his delivery lines were mediocre at best. Perhaps he already knew the outcome for his character, but I just didn’t see the intensity. Morrison ached her heart out in the Echo Cave and his *I will never give up (sic)…” line afterward was flat , shallow and vividly out of place considering the acting going on around him in those scenes.
THIS! Here have a box of hooky cookies 🙂
Hook, even when being a bit of a prick, did everything with a deep level of brooding passion or sincere rapscallion sass. Like him or not, he made/makes his scenes come alive with emotion. He CAUSED/causes attention and emotions on a very high level. That is TV GOLD.
What can I say… HELL YES!!! Colin is right up there with JMo in his emotive acting skills & I found when MRJ was acting alongside JMo, he came off very, umm…. unequal to the task- just my personal opinion, but for me it was even more blatantly obvious when you throw the rest of the cast into the mix- Lana, Robert, Ginny & Josh.
When Hook remained quiet in the face of Emma’s snarkish stoicism, well, that was obviously his choice! It was the long haul he talked about. It was not at all attractive of Emma and made some of us what to kick her in the butt, but Hook was the one taking that attitude. He could have walked if it bothered him that much. He chose to take it. He felt the payoff was worth it.
Yes, this too.

ParticipantOK, THIS is what I love about the CS troops…we can have a seriously detailed plot conversation, meet in the shallow end with drinks (make mine Iced tea all the way from Longgg Island~grin) AND laugh our self-deprecating tushes off over some seriously twisted- clever and irreverant gifs…all on one page of the thread
Not a bad place to spend the hiatus, eh?
Haha, well said *Cheers* 😀 😉

ParticipantI like that about us too. It’s healthy to be able to look at a scene and poke fun of it and at the same time analyze the hook out of it.
fyi, I am going to Las Vegas tomorrow for a one week vacation. I should be able still to view the forums since I’ll be bringing my Mac with me. And I’ll definitely have my iPhone with me. It rings when there’s a new post on the forums.
but in case I’ll be too busy, I just wanted to say I’ll be thinking of you all.
Have/hope you had an awesome time 😀
Hi All,
Hope you all are enjoying the holiday weekend with something fun and peaceful!
Thanks for that quote/link callmeLola…it is always good to see people appreciate what we have felt all along!
Just a side comment during the hiatus when lifestyles, summer, realities take us away from the concentrated attention to OUAT…I find that other than the camaraderie of fellow Hooksters, Emmites, CaptainSwanners here, many times I enjoy the show so much more when it isn’t cluttered with the persistent hate and pettiness of so many Internet dwellers who want to do nothing but complain and suck the life out of everything when things don’t go as they envisioned, dreamed, hoped.
General viewers and non-Internet-addicted (grin) Oncers have very little problem with what is going on and can enjoy the show for exactly what it is…escapism entertainment with tons of imagination!…and a damn good looking cast (grin). The general consensus of those real life Oncers in my work force and public contact has been one of looking forward to the fall and the introduction of Elsa.
The biggest detriment to the show is not lapses of consistency in writing nor faulty plot lines or (fill in the blank with any words insinuating pandering) It is the pungent killjoy attitude of viewers and posters who can’t embrace anything but negativity no matter what. Nothing will be good enough for those types.
Colin’s Hook has grown immensely in character yet has (thanks to Colin’s talent) maintained his charm, appeal and passion along the way. He’s an original. I have gone through many stages of Captain Hook performances over the years, and each one has been quite unique. There is no one definition. Just more to enjoy.
And I for one WILL enjoy whatever new adventures other creative minds create for my entertainment

Agree with both of these posts.

Participant8. Hook – Once Upon a Time
The hot bad boy pirate with a heart of gold, he sold The Jolly Roger to get from the Enchanted Forest to NYC to find Emma. Now they’re romantically linked and he lends support to Henry. “One of these days I’m going to stop chasing this woman.” — Hookhttp://www.tvfanatic.com/slideshows/11-breakout-characters-of-2013-2014/what-will-hook-do/

ParticipantWe’ve already seen Emma and Killian as a team and they work well together. But working together as allies vs. boyfriend/girlfriend will be different.
But Killian’s had a much longer track record in that he hasn’t been in a relationship for almost 300 years which trumps Emma’s ten years without love.
I look forward to seeing how they are as a couple.
This probably won’t make any sense to anyone here but I hope they’re like John and Aeryn from Farscape.
