Beautiful meta @obisgirl! A and E are giving us a gift by allowing fans to be a part of Hook and Emma’s story, and I’m personally going to be enjoying every second of it :)

    I 2nd this 🙂 Well written Obisgirl!

I mean look at how many Rumbelle fans talk about how “hot/sexy” Rumple is, yet they dont get told they “only like him because he’s hot”- it also seems to escape the notice of ‘some’ fans that Rumple has indeed treated Belle very poorly in the past & is doing so again in someways, yet he’s still deserving of love & redemption.

    Two things:

    1) I disagree with the view that Rumple has treated Belle poorly. Whilst he isn’t and hasn’t always been honest with her, which is something he needs to work on, he hasn’t mistreated her. Belle isn’t the type of person to fall in love with someone who just treats her as a pretty little trinket or worse. Rumple does treat Belle well, he loves and cares for her, he just needs to learn to be more honest with her.

    2) I think the reason that “they only like him because he’s hot” gets brought up in regards to Hook rather than the likes of Rumple or Charming (though both are indeed “hot” and Rumple and Hook normally top the most handsome guy on Once polls) is because at the moment CS is not proven to be TL. Also since both Hook and Neal were part of a love triangle, people were always going to root for one guy over the other and belittle the other guy.

Also, genuine question, Do you think fans can actually influence both positively and negatively how other people see a character?

All magic comes with a price!

For your 1st point- I was actually mostly referring to Rumple bodily throwing Belle into the cell & screaming at her aggressively while accusing her of being in league with Regina- no matter how you spin that- he treated Belle poorly in those moments & no matter what his reasons Rumple DID tell 2 massive lies to Belle while proposing to her- both of which served Rumple’s self interests not Belles, again poor treatment of Belle.

Not one of our villains is innocent when it comes to treating their supposed other half’s poorly in some way shape or form- Hook was crass/rude/captain innuendo with Emma (he had his reasons- it’s his wall/ kept people from getting close etc.), Rumple tossed Belle bodily into a cell, banished her out of his sight & he did majorly lie to her to her face (he had his reasons- wanting to track Bae down & addicted to power/magic etc.), Regina (as far as we know), spent the whole year in EF being rude/ snarking at & putting down Robin (again had her reasons- her walls & fear of happy ending etc.). Do please remember that ALL these characters can & do redeem themselves, but they have vices they need to over come in the process, vices which Killy & Regina have had a whole year to work on, while Rumple was ……. goopy 😉 – Hook seems a little ahead of Rumple & Regina atm (although S4 will be the proving ground there! 😉 ) as we havent really heard from capt.  innuendo in a long while, Regina appears to have come a long way as well, just how far she’s come will be tested in S4 & Rumple will hopefully get a chance to learn from his mistakes & make better choices when it comes to his ease of manipulating his loved ones to satisfy his DO desires.

    2) I dont buy that as a good enough reason, why? CS is a cannon couple on screen, TL or not & so what applies to other cannon couples also applies to CS- People did go around saying how hot MRJ was, yet SF was never confirmed TL & they didnt get told they only liked them because MRJ was hot- these 2 were Ex BF/GF, not a real time, TL or cannon couple.

    3) Not I’m not 100% sure in what context you mean when you say “influence other people”- if you mean “general audience”, then no- my love of CS didnt influence any, of the many people I know who enjoy & watch Once every week, but arent active in the fandom itself. If you mean “other people, being fans like ourselves”, then yes & no ;). I dont think you can change a “fan of a characters” mind, by bashing said character to death- if anything their love of the character usually deepens because they feel the need to protect them more, but the people doing the bashing become resented & respect for them declines. However, I do think you can change how other fans feel about certain character’s by doing the opposite- totally ignore his/her flaws, put them up on a pedestal & it tends to eventually drive people to distraction- they tend to start disliking the character, as well as resent those doing the OTT PR for them. HOWEVER there is always exceptions, you get those people who can be persuaded (or bullied) into changing their opinions no matter how much they like or love something- so for them, yes, it is more than possible to change their opinions of characters & couples etc. for better or worse.

So so so many pretties! Thank you! I’ve been good and managed to avoid the full screening recap, so hopefully there will still be some surprises for me on Sunday (Monday, actually) To quote Elsa and Anna “It’s AGONY to wait!!”

Also, genuine question, Do you think fans can actually influence both positively and negatively how other people see a character?

Totally they can. I’ve been put off Neal and to a certain point Regina by the viciousness I read by the toxic part of their fan groups – and obviously I don’t include all fan in this, because by and large like with everything, there is always a small faction that spoils things for everyone. I guess since I’m unabashedly a Hook fan (and yes I do find Colin absolutely tongue-lollingly gorgeous) it always ticks me off that he gets the brunt of the hatred esp from (not all!) the SQ/SF fans, so it taints my view of Regina and Neal (strangely not Emma, but I guess Hook is viewed at the rival to Regina and Neal so that’s who the toxicity is aimed at.)

This may be strange, but I also find over-positivity can taint my view of a character too. This happens to me in general, rather than with specific characters, if I get the ‘omg this is the best thing ever, you’re going to love it b/c it is just so freaking awesome, you HAVE to watch it because because because…’ I have a tendency not to watch/not to like because I’ve been ‘forced’ into liking it so I will try to find the flaws in it rather than sitting back and enjoying it.

And I’ve just read this! Yes!! Exactly 😀 I think that’s what I was trying to say

If one is to engage with the primordial forces of darkness, one must expect a little social awkwardness

Haha, I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this- It’s the ‘leading a horse to water, but you cant make him/her drink’ thing 😉 I drive my friends & family up the wall with it…them beaming & being excited about something they watched/read (minus the ‘you have to watch/read it) & I usually eventually go off & have a look see for myself, but try pushing how OTT fantastic something is on me & I dig my heels right in & refuse to budge/watch or read whatever it is lol.
