PriceofMagic
ParticipantJust thought of another reason why Rumple wouldn’t help Hook and Charming- If Rumple solves every problem on the show easily, it takes any dramatic suspense out of the problem.

True, Price. But you know, his solutions to things are interesting. I still want to know how he managed to have a vile of Regina’s tears in his possession. I know he trained Regina to use magic but I don’t remember a scene where he sat around with a bottle as she cried and cried.

ParticipantI definitely agree with those sentiments…I mean, I’ve heard of “hate-watching” and all, but it’s weird seeing so many people rather obsessed with a show but wanting so badly for it to end. And yeah, no one on the show is perfect. And the people who most often go on anti-Hook tirades are, of course, the ones who ship Emma with someone else. For example, I find it hilarious to see people who want to see Emma with Regina talking about how terrible Hook is. I mean, seriously? Let’s think about this for a second. If Regina were a male character, I highly doubt anyone would be defending her. Why are murder, rape, and child abuse totally forgivable crimes if a woman is the one committing them? I also bristle at the implication that Emma is too stupid or naive to “see Hook for what he is”. She is very clearly neither of those things, nor is she afraid to tell a guy to bleep off if she doesn’t want him around–look how she reacted when he kissed her in 311 when she had no idea who he was–like mother, like daughter.
Absolutely! I always think of it the other way as well. If Hook was a woman, would he be garnering as much as hate as he does. Ignore the romantic element (well actually you don’t have to) but if everything Hook did over season 3 in terms of their friendship – encouraging her, standing by her, helping her family, etc – if that was all done by Mulan for example there would not be all the backlash about her being all stalkery or only doing it to get into Emma’s pants. I find that Hook gets a lot of flack just b/c he’s a bloke, which makes absolutely no sense at all.
Good points & sadly very true. I also think some of the reason also comes down to the near total anonymity & feeling they can get away with it, since they are hiding behind their computers & pouring their hate out on others… as honestly who’d want to openly show their face, saying some of the things they say?! My bet is not a single one of them would. Bullying Septic Cowards.

ParticipantThe funny thing about the haters, as someone pointed out on the CS podcast is that the haters can’t seem to decide what kind of person Hook should be. Haters hated him when he was the villain (although, an incredibly lousy villain when compared to Regina and Rumple) but now, that he’s a hero, they hate still hate him. Even though he’s the hero.
I think what it all comes down to is who Hook is currently with: Emma.
And the amount of hate Jen gets on twitter on a daily basis for ‘shipping CS and being happy for her character, is truly disgusting.
I’ll take the tea incident because that’s the most recent as well as the most ridiculous fight ever. People were getting upset on twitter because Jen made a comment that she wanted to buy a Captain Swan flavored tea. I’m like, really? You’re getting bent out of shape over a tea blend? On a site where you can make your own tea blend?
One of the nastier comments I read was that someone hoped Hook would give Emma an STD. You don’t make snide or joking remarks like that, even when it’s about a fictional character. It’s really poor taste.
Exactly!

Yes, however that argument can be used for almost anything on once- including plot holes 😉

LOL over that mental picture.

ParticipantI’m really not sure how much gender is a factor here in the Hook hate. Swan Queen fans hate him because he’s with Emma, Swan Fire hate him because he’s with Emma. If Emma was a lesbian and with a woman, I don’t know, I feel like the hate would be equal because Emma’s with someone who isn’t their favorite. I could be wrong, maybe it would be less because Once would be showing LGBT love story. I don’t know.
I know Adam and Eddy say that they’re waiting for the right time to bring in a LGBT character but I know for sure that they are not going to touch the original traditional fairytale characters and make them lesbian or gay. It’s just not going to happen. But they could with a lesser known fairytale character. I feel like that’s the route that they would go because it would be safe.

I know, right? It’s not like some major tea corporation endorsed CS! And then there was that whole thing with Yvette Nicole Brown, which led to her and Jen getting attacked on Twitter and YNB saying that she wasn’t going to live tweet the episodes anymore. And that’s a shame, because I enjoyed her commentary.
And yeah, I’ve seen a variety of disturbing comments like that. It’s like some people just can’t separate actors and characters (I see that a lot on Twitter). And it usually comes across as an unpleasant combination of rude and creepy. I don’t know if this came up here or not, but it was going around on Tumblr–another one of those “open letter” things, this time to Jen. (Here‘s a link if any of you are as morbidly curious as I was, lol.)

You’re right, gender probably doesn’t come into in in terms of who Emma is with, she’s getting hate from all corners. Even if Hook didn’t end up with Emma, he’s still seems to be a divisive character, more so than anyone else.

I was morbidly curious and I shouldn’t have been. It just reads like a temper tantrum. You can’t please everyone, someone’s always going to be disappointed with who Emma ends up with, but the visceral hate for a TV show/character is just astounding. And just to put it out there, I don’t particularly like Outlander, but I’m not writing vicious letters to the writers/author/actors to demand they change it to suit my tastes.
If one is to engage with the primordial forces of darkness, one must expect a little social awkwardness

ParticipantI used to get upset about the hate but now I (mostly) just let it roll off my back. I think because most of the valid arguments against Hook/Emma and/or CS have been blown out of the water. And the whole Hook and rape culture thing – I don’t even want to go there. I think it’s just completely insulting to actual victims to use a vicious, horrid crime for their tv watching agenda. Actually, I don’t know if insulting is really a strong enough word! Anyhow, back to my original thought – most of what the haters come up with is just so out there or stretched or contorted cannon it’s hilarious.
I have to do my rewatch! I haven’t broken my DVR yet watching the scenes of Hook holding Emma in the loft yet…I’m super impressed by that little box! I’m preparing myself in advance for the feels this Sunday because I definitely was NOT prepared last week!
