ParticipantThanks @surayya for all the great gifs. Got to say, this one is my favorite:
I think poor Colin completely forgot to button up his shirt under that vest 🙂
Rocky Road is my favorite episode this season so far, for completely non-shipping reasons. I think Goodman and Schwartz hit that good balance between witty dialogue and character interaction. Everyone got some important screen time this episode which is good to see. Can’t wait for these two writers to collaborate again.
So, I’ve been reading quite a few reviews from different source,s some of which were posted on this site. I can’t believe how polarizing this show has become, even among journalists. Reviews ran the gamut from complete hate and ridicule of the show to fawning over it. The complaints varied from not enough screen time for Rumple and Regina and too much screen time for Hook, to hating on Emma and/or the Frozen storyline and-“how DARE they mention NEAL after they killed him”. I have yet to read a completely unbiased review. HOWEVER since this is the CS thread, I feel obliged to post the link to Nerdy Girl Notes review, which gave me the feels in its utter love for our ship.
At first, Emma’s interactions with Hook in this episode might have given you a sense of tonal whiplash after how open and vulnerable she was with him at the end of “White Out.” But I think between her own brush with death and seeing Robin struggling with Marian’s curse, Emma had mortality on the brain. This made her suddenly very forceful in her attempts to keep Hook safe and in her frustration with him when he ended up in a life-threatening situation. However, Hook did what he does so wonderfully where Emma is concerned: He made her stop running (literally and figuratively). He voiced the same concern we saw him state in the first episode of the season: She’s avoiding him, and he wants to know why. And this time, she actually told him. In the course of two episodes, their relationship has grown so much, and I loved that the physical intimacy shown in their closeness in “White Out” gave way to the emotional intimacy of Emma finally being honest about why she’s been holding back with Hook. I adore when characters are allowed to talk through their issues like real adults, and that’s one of my favorite things about Hook and Emma’s dynamic: He makes her feel safe enough to open up to him about emotional things she probably wouldn’t share with anyone else.
As good as the episode was, it just didn’t give me the unabashed “SQUEEEEEE!” effect of the previous “White Out” episode. I love spoilers (my fault, I know), but knowing that the kiss was coming kind of took the excitement out of the it (yes, I was HOT, but a surprise kiss would have really knocked my socks off). What went on between them before the kiss was the best though- her tears, that little smile of his, ugh! I was a puddle of emotional goo.
The Hook and Rumple scene got me really excited for what’s to come and I bet you anything that Colin and Bobby are having a blast working together. @rumplegoldfan, @surayya et al, I agree with you 100% that this show as come full circle, back to S1 standards. Hope the writers keep up the momentum, cause its getting good!

ParticipantI ‘ve really loved this episode. Not just in CS terms, although I fell so spoiled by all thoese “one time Things”. 😉 They’re throwing them left and right. More closeups of kisses please….
The story and character development this season have been fantastic so far.
As for various reviews I’ve read… I find some of them really unprofessional. My husband has been a cultural reviewer once so I know, what I’m talking about. I’ve been his beta reader more times then I can count. And those full of hate- have the sane thing in comon- Hook hate and lack of understnding some of basic psychology. When somone writes that Emma’s fear of losing the man, she could love is not good enough reason to push him away I just rool my eyes. Becouse for her it’ a realy important reason. Rumple, described as an addict, is prone to slip back into his old ways, despite his love for Bell being true. Regina is struglling to stay on the light side but old habits die hard.
This season is going to be overall fantastic.

ParticipantI saw Emma’s date outfit and, whilst it might be a nice dress, it doesn’t really suit Emma’s style. It makes her look too innocent. I could imagine teen Emma wearing that dress for her first ever date with a boy (if Emma had had a happy family filled childhood) but not adult Emma. I have the same problem with the Belle dress in the promo pics, it makes Belle look too innocent. In fact I’d go so far as to say that the writing of Belle in season 4 so far has really played up the innocence factor, perhaps to make Rumple’s actions seem worse than they are?
White Out was a great episode for CS.
All magic comes with a price!

ParticipantTo be fair, this is probably Emma’s first real proper date and if it is, seriously, it’s okay for her to be all pretty and lovely for it. Heck, the reason why I made such a big deal about going to prom my senior year was because it was my first date). And there is an innocence when there is a first date between a couple. I remember how nervous I was when I had my first meeting/date with my current boyfriend. I don’t see how that’s a bad thing.

I think they are going the kind of first date route. It’s interesting, because it could show a lot of issues and lost opportunities. Not only CS stuff but also Snow and Charming, perhaps even Elsa. I do like how Hook and Emma kinda act like teenagers in promo . It’s cute. It is obvoius the date will end badly. But everyone will grow from it and maybe we’ll get a more CS like date. When they won’t be so … nervous about it and act like they normaly do.
I think that those outfits represent a happy time in Belle’s life. She’s wearing light, happy colors. Rumple is just being Rumple. We dont’t know what his agenda is. My guess is it’s rather gray then black.

Agreed. They also tend to dress Emma how she’s feeling, so if she’s feeling much softer, more open & vulnerable, it makes sense she will be shown in a softer, more innocent style of dress & hair style etc..
Haha, you bet me to posting nerdy girls review @callmeLola
As for the hateful reviewers of Once, they are quite frankly talking out a hole in their backsides, because their oh so uninsightful views dont seem to reflect the ratings one bit… also reading reviews posted on this site, is like reading reviews of prison, written by prisoners in solitary lol 😛 They favor posting negative ones, as thats what seems to fall into line the most vocal posters on this site. This site isnt getting its anti-fan reputation for nothing sadly.
The true hallmark of what works is actual fan chatter & viewership IMO. I a member of a couple of groups which encompass over 5000 members, most of whom are if not out right loving this season, then at least enjoying it 🙂
I agree this was the best ep yet, I think this episode balanced plot & character arc/moments perfectly 🙂October 14, 2014 at 6:56 pm #285568Epona_610
ParticipantOkay, promo pics are too adorable! And re: Emma’s outfit…I’m not generally one to analyze fashion a whole lot, but the first thing I noticed was how different this dress was from the dresses we’ve seen her in for other dates. There was the pink one in the pilot (not that that was a real date) and the black leather one she was wearing when Walsh proposed, and not only is this one in a lighter, more delicate color, but it’s also not skintight like the others. I don’t really know what to make of that, just thought I’d point it out. 😛 There’s also that very strong “Grease” vibe, haha. But yeah, they’re definitely going for the “young and innocent” vibe, with the more modest ivory-colored dress, the ponytail, the little pearl earrings…so cute! Between the outfit, Snow with the camera, and Charming with the dad-glare…they’re not-so-subtly trying to recapture one of those lost childhood moments.
And there’s the hand thing…I’m very curious to see how that goes down. For one thing, why is it in some kind of liquid when it wasn’t before? That’s fishy right there. And I don’t think I could deal with seeing Rumple take Hook’s hand again! (I mean, I know he’ll lose it again, but that’ll be so sad!) And let’s not forget that whole thing came from a deal that Rumple broke anyway (Milah’s and Killian’s lives for the bean–he murdered Milah and took the bean–or so he thought–anyway, in the most brutal way possible).
As for why he’s hanging on to it to begin with, my theory is that maybe seeing the hand gave him an ego boost–it’s like a reminder of how he damaged the man who once made him (Rumple) feel emasculated, first when Killian challenged him to a duel and called him out on his cowardice and then when Rumple learned the truth about his wife having chosen to leave him for Killian and being so much happier for it.
Gah, I have more to say but I have to leave for dinner. I think I got distracted looking at all of the pretty things @surayya posted…

& the fact Snow puts down Neil (screw it, no matter how creepy weird it sounds in my head, big Neal is ‘Neal’ & Baby Neil is ‘Neil’) in favor of getting a picture of her daughter – Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I was full on hoping for this moment to be shown, I hope we get to see it <3

Totally agree with you here, I’d gotten used to the idea he’d have his hand back, so to find out it is for only an episode or 2, is a bit foreboding- Whales arm reattachment wasnt temporary & with magic in play I cant see why Killy’s hand would be any different (I’m wondering if Rumple ‘hires’ the hand to Killy & it’s a bit like Cinderella at the ball, he has it for a set time & poof off turns back into a stump/hook again or something maybe). I’m hoping Rumple has magicked the hand (or gives him another’s hand…*shudders*) or something like that in revenge for Hook crossing him (but I doubt Rumple would leave it at that), or that the ‘price’ of getting his hand back is higher than he thought & he gets Rumple to magic it off- I dont think I could stand seeing it cut off again either :/
I had totally planned on NOT spoiling myself this time…. but what can I say….where Once is concerned, I’m horribly weak LOL

This wouldnt surprise me in the least.

ParticipantI quite like the look they’re going for with Emma. The other two dates we’ve seen her on were very different. The first was work, she was in predator mode so she needed to look like a knock-out stunner to catch the guy. (I saw a show the other day that did an experiment on proving that men’s metal capacity goes down after talking to an attractive women, and it did heheheee). The second was a date with a man she’d been going out with for 8 months, she was already quite confident in her feelings for Walsh at that time. Also I got the impression she’d just come from work that time as well, so again perhaps needed the knock-out stunner look. There’s no need to attract Killian, he’s already well attracted, hence the toned down just nice looking pretty thing to wear, she can just be herself for a change. And it works well with/against Killian’s black leather. Yes and although I’m loathe to admit it, it is very Grease.
Ohhh that top photo with the rose is so sweet. Did you see the one of Charming with his arm crossed looking all ‘you better not hurt my daughter or I will break you.” I love him in daddy mode. It’s just beautifully pointless but he’s still going to try and protect his little girl.
If one is to engage with the primordial forces of darkness, one must expect a little social awkwardness
