ParticipantThose vids were great, thanks for sharing!
They reminded me of a couple observations I wanted to add here:
* Snow knows that Charming has another name (even if it is one he’s having to assume at the time) and she chooses to call him Charming
* Emma was introduced to Hook as Killian Jones but insists on calling him Hook (even though she almost always uses SB names for everyone else)In present day FTL:
* Emma is first scene under a pile of rubble
* Hook is found under a pile of …well the mess that Cora made in the camp* Snowing & CaptainSwan have both had to run from Anton
Most of the main characters are big on keeping souveniers:
* RumBelle has Chip
* Snowing has Ruth’s ring
* SF has the swan keychain/necklace & the car
* CaptainSwan has the scarf (it’s still in the sheriff’s desk drawer as far as we know)Of these only one has been returned and that’s the swan necklace. Just saying.
The handwrap scene was brought up earlier elsewhere as a parallel to Willabeth (I don’t remember this name but will go with it…) from PotC. They have a cute scene (just like in Tangled) where Will wraps Elizabeth’s hand after it’s cut too. (How did I not think of that scene when Tallahassee came around I do not know but will chalk it up to not watching PotC in forever – a mistake which must be remedied).
I love that we’ve now seen both Graham and Hook tend to her wounds. They appreciate her because she’s tough but they also feel compelled to take care of her. They let her fight her battles instead of babying her but they’re there to pick up the pieces. She’s not one that likes asking for help but they can read her well enough to know when she needs them to be persistent and they always take care of her. (I knew there was a reason I hadn’t really shipped her with anyone since Gremma and finally after 2 seasons have a ship!)
I know originally people (including myself) were quick to say that Hook is a lot like Captain Jack Sparrow (and Dread Pirate Roberts Westley of course!) but I think he’s more a combo of Jack & Will (at least on the PotC side of things) rather than just one or the other. We definitely need more of Killian’s backstory to see how well that matches up (kinda hoping for a Westley farm-boy-esque background (1 – because I love it and 2 – hello Charming parallel + 2.5 – people saying Emma needs a man like her dad, not a pirate, cause they could *never be the same, nope, never *refers back to earlier post about the Charming/Hook parallel gif set from tumblr & grins* but that could merge with Will a bit). Will was abandoned as a child, became a pirate and eventually a captain (key point in this parallel) in his own right so we can’t throw that out too fast. After all they said they wouldn’t actually use Jack Sparrow unless they got Johnny Depp and I don’t see Hook as just being a renamed character. He’s a mixture of a lot of wonderful things and I do see a lot of Will in him from time to time (especially with regards to Emma).
I realllly need to do a PotC day to enjoy all the new CS feelings sure to go along with it. At least we know one thing for sure, both Hook & Will have feelings for E. Swan(n)s! 🙂 *Adds PotC marathon & Princess Bride to the growing list of things to watch / rewatch over the hiatus* So many CS feelings!

ParticipantJust wanted to share this link where someone has been keeping tabs on the various comments made by cast and crew for CS stuff on tumblr: http://captainswanouat.tumblr.com/csinfo I especially love the twitter one from Jane Espenson. 🙂 (The only thing I can’t find the info to back it up on is the supposed confirmation by JMO that Emma & Neal will never get back together & they didn’t have a quote on there so not sure why they included it. It was strongly hinted at from her interview after Manhattan but that’s the closest I could find to it. So take everything with a grain of salt and enjoy. (I <3 having it all in one place, especially those pesky twitter graphics)
Also, I just posted over here https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=3590 as to why I want Neal/Regina & think they will work (without saying to get him out of the way for CS cause I kinda hate that – I genuinely see a reason it makes sense for Neal/Regina to work and it just has the added benefit of making me feel better about CS happening now that I’m seeing the setup for Neal/Regina too!)

ParticipantYou have got some great themes mentioned here, so I will have to address them individually.

* Emma was introduced to Hook as Killian Jones but insists on calling him Hook (even though she almost always uses SB names for everyone else)Emma does refuse to call him Killian, and here’s why in addition to the Snowing parallel: She has personally interacted with and for the most part, become neighborly to most of the SB characters. She has seen them as regular people before she found out that they were fairytale characters.
Because Hook is typecasted as a “villian” and her initial encountering is in FTL, she can’t think of him as anything else than what she has heard about him from her own recollections of fairytales.And, Emma has already broken the curse and realized there are fairytale characters that exist.
Cora, Mulan, and Aurora all go by their personal names because no one, in addition to Emma, really calls them by their fairytale names. (Although, Mulan and Cora don’t seem to have an official fairytale name. They simply go by their names).In present day FTL:
* Emma is first scene under a pile of rubble
* Hook is found under a pile of …well the mess that Cora made in the campYes, they are both found that way, though technically, Hook was seen by Lake Nostos with Cora initially when the curse broke.
* Snowing & CaptainSwan have both had to run from Anton
This is one of my favorite parallels. I also like how Anton hugged Emma (just a sidenote). I wanted more interactions with Anton and Emma. They are cute together!
Most of the main characters are big on keeping souveniers:
* RumBelle has Chip
* Snowing has Ruth’s ring
* SF has the swan keychain/necklace & the car
* CaptainSwan has the scarf (it’s still in the sheriff’s desk drawer as far as we know)Yes! They really need to address this. Hook is a keen observer, and although he was preoccupied with the hook, I would think that he would have noticedthe scarf when he was trying to uncover the hook. I think it would be a great conversation on the ship when they have some downtime.
I love that we’ve now seen both Graham and Hook tend to her wounds. They appreciate her because she’s tough but they also feel compelled to take care of her. They let her fight her battles instead of babying her but they’re there to pick up the pieces. (I knew there was a reason I hadn’t really shipped her with anyone since Gremma and finally after 2 seasons have a ship!)
I do like how the writers keep Emma as a strong warrior princess. They let everyone know that she can take care of herself, but in moments of insistence from the objects of her attractions, she lets them tend to her. Also, who thinks Hook was bluffing about giants being able to smell blood? He knew she wouldn’t have agreed otherwise, so he gives her a reason. I also nearly keeled over when he grabbed her by his hook in addition to the infamous mouth action with the scarf.
I do like the POTC/Princess Bride references and similarities and differences. They all have their unique storylines, but one thing is for sure: the unlikely pairs make it out strong! Oh, and here’s a parallel: all female characters are richer/of more noble blood than their male counterparts. I love pirates. *sighs*

ParticipantJasmine you’re right, I must have blocked out the fact that we saw Hook with Cora. *shudders*
Changing it to:
* They were both found under piles of debris in present-day FTL
Your point about Hook being a keen observer is good too – wonder if he’ll notice her necklace is missing and ask her about it? Seems like something he would do.
Love your comments about PotC/Princess Bride! Very good points all around! 🙂

Yeah, it works! They were under piles of debris, so there is a parallel regardless!

Some fanfics have addressed this very fact about her missing necklace. One of my favorite ones has her subconsciously reaching for where it used to be whenever she is about to trust Hook. I thought that was a great way to bring the topic up, and of course, Hook notices that and calls her out on it.

Thanks! These parallels should hold us down until the real deal!

I agree, Jasmine! Everyone either had a curse name, which Emma got used to using or like Cora, introduced herself as such without Emma knowing of her other identities. I don’t think Emma or Snow knew of those other identities, only Jefferson, Regina and Hook did (probably Rumpel). I know I’m inconsistent with the names and I feel like the writers are too. If there’s a good pattern for why/when Snow and Charming say that versus MM and David, I haven’t really seen it.
So I think we ought to learn more about his name, and it could be a sign of something if Emma stops calling him Hook, but even if she doesn’t, it’s just you get used to a name sometimes.

Yes they are, Grumpy is to Snow as Anton could be to Emma. Trouble is, we did’nt get enough of Tiny. I’m not sure if the actor had that much availability or the writers couldn’t fit more into the scenes, but so much missing story! Given that Anton and Hook spent 10 hours together before he released Hook, and Hook had the dried bean, I’m curious how that happened. Then of course, the shrinking of Anton by Cora. We didn’t get to see Hook and Anton interact in SB since Hook ran when everyone was distracted. They can’t show everything, but they could maybe do a flashback at some point.

Yes, she’s no damsel in distress. She and Hook worked like partners at the top of the beanstalk, and that’s the right vibe for her, the two saving each other.

I totally agree. I think we do need to know more of the family history of his name. As many have mentioned, Hook in the original canon stories is highly educated and of noble birth. Someone correct me if I’m wrong! I always thought it tied in nicely with “I’m always a gentleman” and his insistence on manners and good form, way from the get-go.

Oh, I would love Anton to be Emma’s grumpy. I would be curious to see what happened between Hook and Anton as well. A flashback would be nice. I love Tiny and I want to see more of him if we can.

It’s been widely speculated that he is the son of Davy Jones, but you know what I just thought of, Jones in our world is a very common last name (like Smith). But it’s also where you get that phrase “Keeping up with the Jones'” But it would tie in nicely with the thought that he comes from noble birth but rejected it.

Participant* Emma was introduced to him as Killian Jones but then he said she might be more familiar with his other name and she’s called him Hook since – I think this is partially a way of her keeping him at arm’s lengths because Killian is the kinder side that she keeps wanting to believe in but is afraid to. It’s easier for her to call him Hook (as most people do) for now, but I think down the line it’ll be very significant if she ever calls him Killian (which I think she will)
* There’s been lots of speculation as to the name of Killian Jones and I am definitely looking forward to more backstory for him (*please be a farm boy – paralleling to Charming and giving us a bit more of that Westley side too. Pretty please??* – wouldn’t mind connections to William Turner either though 😉 )
* As for the other names, I think in SB, SB names are mostly used – you’re seeing people you remember calling __ for “as long as you can remember” and especially the last year or so before the curse was broken and you’re walking around in Maine, wearing normal everyday clothes. I think also part of it is done for Henry’s sake – he knows MM & David, and while he calls Charming “Gramps” most of the time (too cute!), Charming tends to refer to Snow as MM, especially when talking to Henry. That’s who he knows them as and again, they’re in the SB environment. I’m hopeful that if they go back to FTL, or maybe potentially even in NL (probably depends on any history there could be with it, who may or may not know them etc), they will switch back to the names that they originally had (especially now that Emma has called them “Mom” & “Dad” – before she kept calling them, especially MM, by the name she knew her as as a friend, she didn’t *know* Snow). I’m trying to remember what Snow did in present-day FTL – Aurora & Mulan only have the one option for names, but what did they know Snow as? (I need to do my rewatch but I feel like in FTL, the name Snow holds a lot more weight so eventually if they go back, Snow will once again be Snow so people know who she is and not to mess with her)
* I would LOVE for Anton to be Emma’s “Grumpy” – I adore both Anton & Grumpy and Emma is a lot like Snow in some ways so it would be nice that she gets her own friend like that too. I love Emma’s friendship with Anton and would like to see that continue. It was sweet that the first time she saw him in SB the same size as her, she gave him a hug and was happy to see him! He’s just so sweet and they get each other! (At least she was easily opened up to Anton – shows that she appreciates kindred spirits and that Hook is in fact different to her because she’s pushing him away – ala Graham).
* I too would like to see a flashback to what went down up the beanstalk and how Hook got the necklace from Anton. We know that at some point after Hook climbed down (presumably with the bean necklace in hand since only he knew about it and Cora was oblivious) that at some point Cora miniaturized Anton to bring him along – when did that happen? What were the reactions?
* I think Hook kept the bean necklace a secret as anything other than a souvenier until he got to Lake Nostos and found out its powers. I know he waved it in front of Emma in the jail cell (*cough* fairy dust necklace *cough* oh hello Snowing!) but Cora was completely clueless about why he needed it so this was clearly a Hook thing. Had he not needed Cora, he may have been able to just jump in with the girls but Emma knocking him out nixed that plan. The fact that he knew instantly what the backup would be tells me this is a possibility (and one of the main reasons I strongly believe he wasn’t really trying all that hard and was a bit amused in the swordfight, because he had a backup all along but only if necessary).
* Something that was pointed out to me on tumblr last night and helps with the Charming / Hook parallels!: THE POUCHES. Charming’s pouch that contained Snowing’s symbol (Ruth’s ring) was shown in the carriage and is a very similar shape (though different color) to the one they focused on in the finale that Hook wears and contained the CaptainSwan symbol: the bean. These guys are more alike than they want to admit!
* Speaking of the bean: the first one was old and shriveled and full of hope and possibilities and then it was revived and took him after Emma who was then reunited with her son. The 2nd bean was brand new and created FOR EMMA to get her out of our world which had been so cruel to her, and take her to a world where she could find happiness and have a fresh start and this is the bean that Hook used to take her to Neverland! (Charming originally intended the beans to get them back to FTL but…well, we know what they say about the best laid plans, poor Charming *pats on head*) Anybody have the exact quote from Charming talking about the beans and how cruel this world has been to Emma?
Genuine reaction to first seeing Tallahasseee (aka: shipper goggles off):
I need to rewatch the scene again but in Tallahassee when Neal offers to settle down and hang up the thieving, I coulda sworn that Emma said “really?” in a weird way and *then* let herself get wrapped up in the idea of him not leaving her. Soon after we saw that dream of Tallahassee put into place, he was planning on sacrificing everything to go to Canada without her which made her panic and step in for him which resulted in everything else. I felt like she was more attached to the dream / idea of it, than the actual thing. Either that or she was just super surprised by him not wanting to steal stuff anymore but I felt like something was off in that moment with her initial reaction to it. Plus her flippantly saying “like where, Neverland?” – it sounded like she didn’t really believe they could do it – did anybody else feel this way about this scene when first watching (CS goggles off and try to remember cause this was before we fell head over heels for Hook).
Her first reactions are usually right – she gets talked into believing in people like Sidney because the emotional side of her *wants* to believe, just like when she tied Hook up and her gut said to trust him but the emotional side of her was too afraid to). She genuinely loved Neal and wanted to hold onto him for sure, I’m mostly talking about the idea of them settling down and changing their lives – something seemed off to me in her initial reactions to it all and thenshe got swept up in it and didn’t want to let him abandon her like everyone else did which is how she got herself into the jail mess. She’s clearly been affected by it more than others as he’s presumably one of the first / only people she’s let herself every really trust and she believed in their love and that dream, but this is how I felt after the first time seeing it. She just wasn’t…jumping for joy, or reacting remotely how I expected her to react to him asking to make a life together. (I realize she has issues with trust and her whole life nobody gave her a stable home, but she wasn’t jumping at one was my point – she got talked in to it and genuinely believed in and more importantly FOUGHT FOR one by helping him rather than letting him run off on his own, but that wasn’t her *first* reaction which is key in my opinion.
Going off of that same scene, the first thought that popped into her head was Neverland (in a flippant sort of way but it was still the first place she thought of as what his dream destination where they could have this perfect little life would be – when she still sounded very skeptical). She went to Tallahassee first looking for Neal but not with him. She’s going to Neverland *with* Hook – yay!
* I hope we get the team split up a little in NL so that Hook & Emma get more interaction without others around so that she can see the real him. He’s not very open when others can see it (yet) but Emma gets to him and I think adventures in NL would be fun. As someone said above, Emma is no damsel in distress and they work well together. I think his belief in her strengthens her belief in herself, even if she doesn’t take compliments very well. When she & Snow first arrived in present-day FTL, Snow was in super protective mom mode and Emma could do nothing right. When Emma climbs the beanstalk with Hook she’s more confident and more herself as we know her again. The woman who will do anything to get back to her kid. (We saw a little of this when she burned the wardrobe to save Snow and the others, but the early days with just the girls she was always being treated like a child who didn’t know how to do anything. Hook believed in her on their trip and after all, they make “quite the team!” I love the idea that they save each other and always find a way back, even when all hope seems lost (like the jail cell / bean necklace situation). It’s very Snowing of them!
