ParticipantI don’t get the chance to come visit for 4 days and I have to backpedal 11 pages! I now have my head wonderfully full of pretties and good discussion! 🙂
In regard to the dress – I’m not shocked by the controversy. With some folks in this fandumb, a character can sneeze and people would find a way to twist it into fodder for their anti-whatever agenda. I still love it. Is it completely different than anything we’ve seen Emma in? Yes. But that’s the point. None of the characters on OUAT get the chance to breathe, but many realize you have to enjoy those quiet moments — Emma still hasn’t completely wrapped her head around that thought. But that dress says she’s trying – she’s realizing she has to put herself first sometimes, and allow herself positive experiences to outweigh the difficult ones. So I think the dress is a lovely way to show just how much Emma has grown. Not just in regard to opening herself to a romantic relationship. Her mother, father, and new friend are also there. S1 Emma, if, say Graham had succeeded in getting her to agree to a date, would have shown up in the red leather jacket of armor and I don’t think anyone would know about the date – even her friend, Mary Margaret. But Emma is allowing her parents and friend to be a part of this very huge moment in her life. All of those lessons she’s learned, about family and community and opening up yourself to the good even though the possibility of hurt could sneak in, are finally coming together for Emma.
And I 2nd – 3rd? 4th? 5th? – the comment about CSers understanding Emma’s psychology, and that other shippers’ focus isn’t necessarily Emma (not saying that has to be a bad thing, but I can see, then, why you are devoted to ships that just aren’t happening and frankly, were never going to happen). I see so much SF stuff about family and Henry…which is all well and good but a romantic relationship is not the same thing. Neal and Emma’s responsibilities as parents to their son is one thing – their responsibilities and the way they feel about each other something else entirely. And, yes, they are two different things. I love my son, but my marriage is my relationship with my husband, my family is my relationship with both my son and husband. SQ is a relationship I have more difficulty with. And it’s most certainly NOT because it’s a relationship between two women. (I would love OUAT to explore a same gender relationship, but with two people who love each other, not 2 pieces of canon relationships, or even unrequited love – ie: Aurora and Mulan. But that’s a tangent for a different day/thread!) SQ is the definition of dysfunctional – ALL of Emma’s misery and scars can be traced back to one person – Regina (Ok, some argue not Regina, but Rumple, but I disagree with that assessment.) Regina ripped Emma away from her parents, caused Emma to grow up feeling worthless and alone…and Emma’s supposed to fall in love with Regina? Um…
Luckily, the haters have just reached a point of ridiculousness. I tend to tune out when the whole rape culture thing gets going – and that means arguments made against Hook or Neal and Emma, or Regina and Graham. Because I think it takes reading a LOT into these situations to go from what we’ve been shown and running around in circles shouting “RC! RC! RC!” And I don’t believe it was ever A&E’s intention to suggest any of these relationships were about rape. Studying this topic in college (Communications major, focus on film/tv theory here) there was one example that was always brought up – General Hospital and the marriage of Luke and Laura (and god, am I dating myself here – but I was only 2 when the actual event was shown on tv!!). If you don’t know the reference, long story short Luke raped (like actual rape, not innuendo or heart-stealing-so-she-was-a-rapist nonsense) Laura…then they fell in love, got married and had a couple of kids. And when the marriage was shown on tv, it broke viewership records. People were OBSESSED with Luke and Laura. The whole he raped her bit pretty much got swept under the rug. This is NOT what we’re seeing in OUAT between any of the characters. So as I have huge problems with my Luke & Laura example, I also have huge problems with people throwing around terms like ‘rape’ and ‘rape culture’ or even ‘stalker’, etc in regard to any of the OUAT characters – because 1) nothing has been established in canon and 2) Rape, and ‘rape culture’ is far to important a topic to use it as part of an agenda to denounce or support your favorite fictional characters on a tv show. Sorry – enough of that – end rant!
Onto more positive topics before I end my novel here (hey, 3 days away, right?! 🙂 ) as far as our dear couple goes, I’m loving what we’re getting. Not much is particularly surprising (I refer you back to the ‘we understand these characters’ comments previously brought up) but it is all very in line with what I expect from this couple. One step forward, 2 steps back. Hook supporting Emma, Emma admitting she’s afraid to lose him (HOW HUGE IS THAT?!) – and hopefully, as many suspect, an identity crisis with Hook and Emma taking on the role of supporter in their relationship. I’m still a little on the fence with EM/Ice Queen but I’m loving the Frozen stuff. Almost all of Kristoff’s stuff in the last episode had me either cracking up or squeeing over his attempts to handle his handful of a soon-to-be sister-in-law! And this episode – I think it just might kill us all!! Bring it on – less than 24 hours now!!!

Participant*Sorry in advance for the tangent.* 😳
You want to complain about rape storylines in a show? Try Defiance! 😯
I mean I like that show, but yikes, there are some seriously disturbing trends there about women, whether as people, in relationships, or as objects for men. And lots of actual rape backstory.
The second season even has a continuing plotline with a guy psycho-stalking a woman, and secretly tormenting her, just so he can be the one to comfort her, to make her fall for him. And it is hinted (not sure though) that he may even be her rapist from many years before, who’s face she never saw, which ruined her marriage at the time.
And guess what? By the end of the season, the woman actually starts to fall for him, and actually sleeps with him. Ick, ick, ick.
Absolutely nothing ambiguous on Defiance. 😡
(And all made even weirder by the fact that I really like the actor who plays the psycho. (He was totally sweet on another show.) I can’t quite figure out whether that makes it easier or hard to watch.) 😕

IKR! If people want to cry promotion of rape culture, they are seriously watching the wrong show with Once.
I was sitting there for Defiance each week going …seriously?! That whole story line is disturbing, because it is actually written to be that way- unlike Once, where people simply want to degrade another character/ship to make their own ship look better.
The 1st season of Defiance wasnt too bad (from memory), we found out she had been raped, but the perpetrator never found/caught- If I’m remembering correctly.
Season 2 was just a whole other, disturbing level, as you pointed out already. I still cant believe they’ve all but paired those 2 together… it’s almost like the 1st & 2nd season where written & produced by totally different people o.O

ParticipantHi!
Yeah, at least it was supposed to be disturbing. 🙄
But even though it was written to be disturbing, they still made her fall for his trickery. 😡

ParticipantOk, almost finished a huge long post and then with one slip of the hand it was erased and gone! That’s one thing I hate about writing directly on the site – it’s way too sensitive and deletes stuff way too easily! Always draft in wordpad or word, Jenna – you know that!! Argh!
Anyway, HAPPY OUAT DAY!!!! We’re going on a date tonight!!! I cannot wait!! haha, and yeah, that’s all I got right now, not in the mood to retype what I was saying before deleting it!!
