Yeah, because I’ve always wondered why I could never really bond or empathise with Neal as a character – Bae for sure, but never Neal. Now I know why!
I really have to agree with a lot of that essay says. I’m with you Eala, I can’t really connect with Neal as a character either.
Really thought this was good. I can’t seem to connect with Neal, either. I love Bae and really feel for his story but there is a disconnect between Bae and Neal. I think if they showed Neal pre-Emma trying to assimilate to our world, I would understand him more.

ParticipantHi fellow shippers! I haven’t written in the forums for a while, but I have been checking out this thread and there are always some great points you all make! I shipped Swanfire most of last season, but the season 2 finale really got me thinking about Hook in a new way. I saw the capacity he has to really care for someone (he was willing to give up everything for Bae) and that he was more than just a flirty pirate. Underneath that flirtatious exterior is a true heart that loves deeply.
After season 2 ended, I started to think that he could be a true contender for Emma’s heart. I’m not against Neal. (I think he’s a good character….although I do agree with a lot of that essay about Neal being a plot device. It would be nice if we could connect with that character a bit more. MRJ’s acting is fantastic! So, it’s definitely just the storyline.) However, past mistakes aside, I don’t think Neal challenges Emma quite like Hook does. Hook and Emma both challenge each other and as Hook said in “Tallahassee” he LOVES a challenge! You have to admit that Emma and Hook have amazing chemistry together! The last episode (“Good Form”) definitely proved it!
One thing that makes me sad for Hook is that he has no one that loves him. Almost every “villain” on the show has at least one person who cares for them (with the exception of Peter Pan…so far). But Hook has lost everyone that ever cared about him. So, I’d like to see him have someone truly love him and help bring him back to the man he was before. I’d like to see him have a happy ending, and for him, I think that means having someone who loves him.
I know some people have mentioned potentially pairing Hook with Ariel. I just don’t see that at all! First, I’m pretty sure Ariel has her own prince and although we haven’t technically met her on the show yet, I think she would be a little too “sweet” for Hook. Don’t get me wrong, Ariel is great! (Apart from the fact that in the Disney movie she put her whole family and ocean friends in DANGER, which forced her Dad to sacrifice himself to save her. But it ended happily and the music was catchy, so all is forgotten!) I think Hook prefers women with a little bit more of an edge. I think Emma has that edge, and when her walls are down, she also has the ability to love deeply.
Thinking back to when Cora tried to rip Emma’s heart out and told her that love is weakness, Emma replied that love is strength. Thus proving just how much Emma can love and just how powerful it is. I think Hook and Emma are a great match, but who knows where the writers will go! I hope they end up together eventually. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

That’s awesome!!! Welcome to the ship! 😉 *passes over rum*

I’m not against Neal, but I definitely don’t care about him much, and get quite annoyed at him sometimes. I hope he gets his happy ending in much the same way I hope that Grumpy for example does. I like Grumpy more than Neal actually, he’s had development of his character haha.
It is definitely just the storyline, but I also feel like it’s on purpose. I’ve said it a few times before, but it feels like the writers are creating the personality disconnect between Neal and Baelfire on purpose, because they’re such skilled writers, ESPECIALLY when it comes to characterisation.
However, past mistakes aside, I don’t think Neal challenges Emma quite like Hook does.

Yep, and that’s Emma 😉

Lol, when I think of that scene all I can remember is how Killian was conveniently unconscious and didn’t see that Emma couldn’t have her heart ripped out….

LOL – I know where the writers are going. But I think myself and obisgirl are the only ones here who are truly convinced that they’re endgame.
@Stelio Kontos – I’m not convinced they are, BUT I’M MORE THAN HAPPY TO BE PROVED WRONG haha

ParticipantHello fellow Captain Swan shippers! I have been following this thread for forever but the latest episode finally drove me to actually register to join in the discussion. This episode made me soooooo happy. I definitely watched the sneak peek of their kiss more than once and it gave me goosebumps every time. I’ve been reading through a lot of your comments and I agree with a lot of what has been said. Here are a few of my thoughts thatI haven’t really seen anyone bring up yet:
Emma agreed to let Regina rip out the lost boys heart. Killian had to watch Milahs heart be ripped out in front of him, so I can’t imagine that he approves of the practice. How is he going to feel towards Emma for her part in the heart ripping out?
i also have been thinking A lot about his prior love, Milah and her character.
I liked the mentioning of drinking they made in this episode in how Killian used to think that drinking was bad form. Yet when we first saw him and Milah together, where we’re they? Drinking in the pub. And Milah wasnt shy about downing the shots. I’m wondering if the Killian Jones we saw in this last episode had some experiences between when his brother died and when he met Milah that actually turned him into the typical dirty drunken pirate. in the flashback, we clearly got that he turned pirate to do the honorable thing in standing up to the king. Yet in the Crocodile, he made mention to having many a mans wife… That doesn’t seem too honorable. Did he become dishonorable over time? Is that kind of what the rum stands for? If yes I’d be excited to see him give it up for Emma. (Who doesn’t seem to think rum should be the answer to everything)
But back to my Milah theories, she came into his life when he was at the high point to pirating. It seems to me that she was better for his bad side. Like the Rumple/Cora/Belle relationships. Cora/Milah brought out the bad, and Belle/Emma bring out the good. We obviously see Hook making an attempt to be good. Saving Emma’s dad for her even though he could possibly stand in the way.
I can’t find who said it, but someone made mention to how Emmas fighting spirit to get back her son drew Hook to her in the first place. again, looking back to Milah, she abandoned her son. (Just like Hooks daddy did to him) Milah fell head over heels for Hook and just up and left Baelfire. Emma obviously feels something I think for Hook, but despite all his charms refuses to give up on or abandon those she loves and is bound to.
Another thing that is parallel to Milah, was that Hook lost her because her heart was ripped out in front of him. Surely his worst fear is losing someone the same way. Who better for him to be with than Emma, who CAN’T have her heart ripped out??
Now on to Neal. (he has been becoming increasingly more annoying the more they bring out the CS feels and making him the obstacle between them) A while ago someone came up with the theory proving CS was endgame because of how we have seen everything about how their romance is developing (like their first kiss! We’ve seen Snowing and Rumbelles first kisses!) And we didn’t see any of that with Emma and Neal. All we have seen was the happy moments before he left her in a flashback, and the messed up mess of their relationship in the present. They would have showed us their cute beginnings if they were going to end up together.
Neal and Hook have both been told by someone that they cannot be with Emma, and both reacted differently. Pinoccio/August told him that he couldn’t be with her because she was the savior and she had a mission to complete. Then he held the fact that if he did decide to stik with her, that he would have to face his father. And what did Neal do? He ran away and left Emma and eventually even found someone else. (even though we don’t know much about his and Tamara’s relationship, he STILL obviously cared about her enough to propose, which he never even did to Emma when they were together) Then we have Hook. Both Charming and Pan have both said he will never have Emma this season. Charming said he couldn’t have her, and Hook didn’t back down. He told Charming all he had to do was wait for him to die and he would be out of the way, but he saved him instead. Then Peter Pan said that Emma would never be with him, and attempted to break him down by calling him a drunk and a pirate. But Killian did not back down. We’ve seen him with her in Storybrook in pictures of things to come, so we know that he does not run away instead of facing his insecurities and fears. (like Neal did)
So yeah, I’ve said a lot, but all in all, Killian and Emma are just meant to be. True love, all the way!!!

ParticipantHi, all- I havent posted for ages either- popped in on & off for a read, but just feel like I need to say I pretty much agree with all that’s been said.
I was surprised we got a kiss so soon into S3- I was worried at 1st (like this was our ‘treat’ before going all out SwanFire, but that doesnt seem to be the case & I’m still hoping for a Captain Swan endgame)
Karlsjr I like your observation on Milah/Hook/Emma & Cora/Rumple/Belle, very interesting & echos pretty much everything Captain Swaners have said.
I too think we’ll get a lot of SwanFire time- it’ll be hard watching Emma & Neal together, but she REALLY needs to address her past with Neal- try again with him or not, go through all the emotions of coming to term with loosing her 1st love…again & then move on from it. It should make for some lovely Snowing/Emma (& maybe even Henry) moments too. The one thing I do want to see this season with regards to Neal, is Emma TELLING her parents exactly what happened between her & Neal- how he left her & why, I think them finding Neal could be a nice opportunity for that to happen (because I dont think Henry should hear it right away- maybe later, all he thinks now is his Dad can do no wrong) & Charmings reaction to Neal over what he put Emma through- it loooonnnnngggggg over due in my eyes.
Not really anything else I can add tbh- it’s all already been said repeatedly lol.
