But any sympathy I had was blown away by the “i’ll never stop fighting for you” BS

I know I posted this elsewhere, but I’ll go ahead and say the same thing here, too. I really am very displeased with the love proclaimation Neal made to Emma, and here’s the reason why. Unless Neal just never loved Tamara in the first place, whether villan or not, his heart would have still been involved. I mean according to that timeline, just a couple of days before, he’d been engaged to marry this girl who betrayed him, and is now dead. Realistically, his emotions would not simply have an on, and off button. He would need time to heal from this before transferring that kind of loyalty to another woman, even if it is someone who he already has affection for. In the real world, somebody in his shoes would be in a state of shock. He’d want answers, he’d need closure, and he’d need time to grieve. Instead, 48 hours after his ex-fiance is dead, he’s telling Emma he loves her, and will fight for her. In my opinion, that really cheapens the concept of love, and it’s value. If Neal really loved Emma, if she were his first choice, when he saw her in New York, Tamara would have been history. That didn’t happen, and so that’s why for me, this proclaimation of love just screams “rebound” or “second choice”. If I were Emma, I’d be insulted, and really concerned that someone who said he loved someone else a couple of days ago was able to switch gears that easily.
I totally agree with you too. It has been a week since they arrived in NL (according to Regina), but that still is nothing, as we’ve not yet seen a single emotion re-Tam & being shot from Neal at all, but I suppose it shouldnt come as a surprise, since he seems to just be a PFD (Plot Forwarding Device) for other characters.
Ok, so I’ve sort of transcribed the exact dialogue from the ep (relating to CS/Emma/Hook), It is quite long though- so sorry in advance for this mega post! I have skipped some sentences, unrelated to CS happenings & to keep it as short as possible (with relevant inserted ‘assumed’ expressions relating to CS) …
- Emma making sure her Daddy & Hook were well out of ear shot & the look on her face was almost terrified when she was telling Snow it was Hook she kissed…..
- Snow’s look of motherly ‘well that explains those looks!’ & ‘what does this mean exactly’ as she says “Oh…Why?”
- Emma “I dont know! I was .. Its been a while, I was feeling “good”.
- That smile on Snow’s face as she said “Did it mean anything?”
- Snow “Im sure Neal will understand.
- Emma “If he’s still alive”
- Snow “Emma, I get what you’re doing you know. You dont want to open yourself up to the hope that he could be alive, but you should”.
- Which stops Emma in her tracks, with a look of annoyance of her face “Why?!”
- Snow “Because you deserve a happy ending & Happy endings always start with hope” -Insert Emma’s look of shock & sadness.
Thoughts…
I really wonder if at this point Emma was wondering if Neal wasnt really her happy ending after all, because she was terrified of him being alive.
Which then kind of foreshadows CS – Emma felt the Kiss with Killian was important enough to tell Snow about it in the 1st place (despite her “it’s just a kiss”- which is exactly the same as her “I dont have feelings for Neal” all last season), she didnt have to tell anyone, esp if she had really felt nothing… I mean why would she tell Snow (esp after the whole Whale/1 night stand thing)?!
So it must have meant something much more to Emma than she has let on & maybe those feelings stirred some hope in her for a new kind of love (hence her reaction to their kiss), which could then be part of the reason for hoping Neal was dead. She was starting to see what love should be like through Snowing & even Killian- being partners, equals, giving & taking, always being there, but never expecting or forcing the other into doing what was wanted & comparing it with what she had & felt for Neal, so when Snow says you “DESERVE” a happy ending & most of what Neal has caused her is pain, she wonders if what they had was really what happy ever afters are supposed to be.
As an aside, we should also maybe consider that it’s possible the reason Emma liked Neal, was in part tied to the stuff/skills that Hook taught Bae- much like Neal liked Emma as she reminded him of Wendy

So Pan wants Emma to admit that She loves Neal & probably always will- so it will destroy her. Hook is supposed to admit he cares for Emma, so it will turn her & the others against him, Snow is meant to admit she wants a baby to turn Emma against her & Charming admit he lied to Snow to turn them against each other…. anyone else getting a total Henry “look what magic has done to you all! You are supposed to be hero’s & you are talking about killing my mom/Regina” flashback here??? Seems like Pan is trying to turn Henry’s family against each other & they just keep coming out stronger & stronger (for the most part).
As an side observation, I find it interesting how Emma & Hook seem to position themselves close to each other more often than not- could this be a little TL tell maybe, they have an unconscious pull towards one another..
- In Echo Cave:
- Emma’s look of terror when she saw Neal was really alive as he shouted “EMMA!” & her physically having to step back. The look of fear on Hooks face, was heartbreaking.
- Emma “So what do we do”
- Hook (insert Hook’s own look of dread mingled fear) “I told you what needs to be done (insert Charming’s look of dread), consider this a moment of truth- literally. Now, who wants to kick things off?”
- Emma “So.. what, someone tells their secret & they sprout wings”

- Charming “Well how do you know it’ll work?” (insert Hook nervous behavior, as he plucks up the courage to reveal his secret & then the worried look Snow keeps giving him in the back ground)

- Hook “Its what the kiss exposed (insert Emma’s shocked face), my secret is, I never thought I’d be capable of letting go of.. my 1st love, of my Milah (insert Snows ‘oh wow’ it was more than a kiss to him! look). To believe that I could find someone else, that is until I meet you (insert Emma’s shocked expression).”
- (insert Emma’s look of ‘feeling’ {she had a very similar look when Henry hugged her the 1st time & when MM was touched Emma had called them family}- the one that looks like love is hurting her look , then she looks at Hook, who returns with a look of apology/vulnerability/ hope/pain/sadness [dang Colin can act!- love the layers he coats Hook in…WOW!!], Hook then turns to David to see his reaction, David gives him a look of understanding & his nod of acceptance, with the ‘I get you really care for my daughter… but I have to dislike you because of liking my daughter’, dad mode hehe. Then as Snowing move away from the edge to reveal their secrets- Emma steps towards Hook & it looks like she wants to say something {her mouth opens & she raises her hand towards Hook as she strides towards him, then drops it as she turns towards Snowing as she stands next to him, while Hook watches her})
- (I wont mention the agony on Snow’s & Charming’s faces for this here, but they both had looks of utter pain on their faces for their confessions) Snow “Ever since the curse broke, since we found each other, since we found Emma (insert confused Emma & Charming expressions). In all of that happiness there is something I havent wanted to admit. Our daughter is a Beautiful, Smart, Amazing women (insert Emma’s ‘it hurts to feel love/emotions’ expression & Hook watching her every expression- I guess trying to figure out how she received the news of his secret), whom I love very much & of whom I could not be more proud. But she’s all grown up. & as much as I want to pretend I’m ok with that, I’m not! We missed it David! What we have with her is unique, but it’s not what I wanted. (Insert Emma’s look of pain *almost had me in tears in slow motion*) We were cheated out of everything- her 1st step! Her 1st word! her 1st smile! We missed it all.

- Snow “When we get off this island & get back to SB, I want another go at it…. I want to have another baby” (note that the look Charming gives Snow, is almost identical to the one Hook gave Emma here)
- Charming “Nothing in this world would make me happier (insert Hook’s look of pain) & I know with all my heart that…. you would make an amazing mother. (Emma’s confused expression & again a look of pain from Hook) But it can never happen, at least not with me”
- Snow “What do you mean?”
- Charming “When Hook & I went to search for the sextant, he was really taking me to find a cure”

- Snow “The lost boys, the arrow, you pushed me out of the way”

I didnt understand why until now. From the moment I saw you in NY, from the instant, you stepped back in my life I knew; I knew I never stopped loving you…. & before I even had a chance to take a breath I… I lost you once more & all that pain that I had pushed down for all those years it just came, rushing back & I.. I didnt know if I could go through it again. I love you, I probably always will…. but my secret….. Is that I was hoping that this was a trick…. I was hoping you were dead. Sorry if its a little incoherent- it’s 2am (then it posted with weird tags all over t, so I had to edit those out & it’s now 2:30am), but I needed to get this all out so I could sleep lol.
Haven’t watched the episode but I get the gist of the overall situation (love triangle). It’s not a love triangle. Not a real one. It’s more one-sided, which doesn’t make it a love triangle at all. It’s a line.
Emma wants to move on with her life. She doesn’t want to be with Neal because she recognizes now, that all he does is cause her pain. Hook loves her and the feeling’s mutual from what I understand.
Neal, on the other hand, still doesn’t care what Emma wants and only cares about what he wants.
This is really great stuff Adam and Eddie are giving us. So much fodder for my True Love meta (I have sections devoted to “destructive true love” and “unhealthy true love” — so what Neal’s doing now could easily go under both, or one or the other. )
@ Sarah_TN- I totally agree with you about Neal in regards to Tamara. I think I’ve said something similar. It definitely bothers me that he is able to “switch gears” so quickly after being in love with someone else. Someone else he was ENGAGED to, nonetheless.

My overall thought of the episode in reagards to Captain Swan is that it was really HEARTBREAKING! I loved seeing Killian admit his secret in the echo caves, but I wanted more of a reaction from Emma. I guess it’s a little too soon to ask for that, considering Neal is alive and they are still resolving their issues. Still, it’s frustrating to me that Emma wants to move on from her past relationship with Neal, but he basically vowed to never let her. I was rolling my eyes during the “I’ll never stop fighting for you” scene. It’s romantic when Belle says it about Rumple because they are True Loves. But when Neal says it to Emma…it’s just irritating.
On a side note, during Snow’s scene where she is revealing her secret and talking about how proud she is of Emma, did anyone notice the way Hook looks at Emma? It’s LOVE! Seriously, if you did not notice that, watch it again! FEELS!
Okay, I feel like a drunken guy from a bad 80’s movie but can I just say how much I love you guys!!! Everyone here has the BEST insights and finds the most amazing “stuff” from all the episodes!
Totally missed the parallel with Snow watching David hug Katherine after waking from his coma – but YES!!! The whole MM, David, Katherine triangle is kind of a parallel in general because I think a lot of Emma’s pull to Neal is out of a sense of loyalty of feeling that she should be with him because of Henry – that it is the noble thing to do, even though she really feels this desire to be with Killian. And it is a lot like Regina reminding David that he needed to be with Katherine, kind of like Snow keeps nudging Emma towards Neal.
As far as the Charmings not knowing all the details of Emma’s past with Neal, they are at least aware that they were never married so they do know that he got their daughter pregnant when she was a teenager. As a parent I am STILL perplexed that this has never been addressed and am more confused that the Charmings would encourage her to get back together with a guy who got their daughter pregnant. Especially since David freaks out when he discovers that Killian kissed Emma when she is now, what, 30 years old???? The only thing I can make of this is that it has been purposely done by A and E and the writers. In other words, so far this season we are seeing Killian bonding with David and hopefully getting on Snow’s good side by saving David and confiding in her about Neal. He shared his secret about his feelings about Emma in front of her parents. He has been, along with Emma, leading them on the quest to save Henry and completely led the effort to save Neal. Everyone knows that when a relationship starts to get serious it’s time to get to know the parents. But Neal is Henry’s father and there has been basically zero interaction with Neal and Snowing since he was found.
Does anyone else feel that it is especially awkward when Snow talks to Emma about Neal? I’m wondering if this will change now that she has heard what Killian’s secret was and what Emma’s secret was. But, excuse the pun, it seems like she is living in a fairy tale land when it comes to Emma’s relationship with Neal. I don’t feel like Emma has ever said anything that has given the impression that Neal is her TL or that she really wants to get back together with him. Even when she told Snowing that she still loved him it was in the context of saying she was ticked at him. I guess I am confused about this – especially since there has been zero interaction between Snowing and Neal. You would think that if they were so excited over the prospect of Neal and Emma together that they would have at least been interested in getting to know him as Henry’s father when he first came to Storybrook – even if he was engaged to Tamara, but they showed zero interest in him then.
Also, did anyone find it interesting that Neal didn’t have to reveal a secret inside the cave to be freed? He told Emma outside the cave that his secret was that he would never stop fighting for her but remember that Killian said that in order for the secret to work inside the cave it had to be your darkest secret – something you would never share with anyone else. And we have established that each of their secrets was used to try to drives wedges between them. I doubt that Neal’s deepest secret is that he will never stop fighting for her. So I agree that once again Neal was just the object that was used to further the plot line of the other characters.
Someone who’s good at symbolism out there, I’m sure there is some significance to the fact that Neal was locked in a cage in that scene. I’m not deep enough to figure it out. Maybe that on his own, Neal is so powerless that he is literally just locked by himself in a cage and that it takes the depth of the other characters to let him out of the cage when he is needed for some reason???
I sometimes feel like I am really hard on Neal and it makes me feel bad. I don’t want to not like him but I just feel so “blah” about him. It’s really NOT MRJ. I had really high hopes when he did the “Is this my son” scene. I know he’s a good actor so I just have to think they are purposely making him a blah character.
I was totally prepared for Emma telling Neal that she loved him but I honestly felt a bit nauseous when it happened (poor Killian having to watch the whole thing). And when she told him “I love you, I probably always will but my secret is . . . ” I was so hoping she was going to say “I love Hook more.”
I girl can dream . . .
So I just watched the episode again and two interesting things I found.
First, when MM first blurts out to Emma that Neal is alive, Emma doesn’t believe it. She starts to say “Neal is dead” but only gets as far as “Neal is . . .” and then right before she is going to say “dead” she looks at Killian and he looks directly into her eyes and she finishes the sentence with “alive” instead. This is super significant. MM has been trying to be supportive of Emma’s grief about Neal and she is her own mother but she doesn’t necessarily believe her when she tells her that Neal is alive. So when she is confused and needs someone to look to who she knows will be honest with her who does she look too?? Killian!!!! She doesn’t even have to ask anything and he doesn’t even have to answer anything. They had an entire conversation without even speaking and she knew that if he told her that Neal was alive then she could believe it. She doesn’t even realize that she trusts him more than anyone else, including her own parents. But he did, after all tell her to look at him after she chained him up and asked her if he lied to her when they went to get the compass. He has continued to prove himself trustworthy whether she realizes it or not.
Second, as someone else pointed out – in the Echo cave after Hook told his secret and the bridge had started to form, Emma stepped toward Killian and started to reach for him and started to say something but then David started talking and it interrupted her. She was going to respond to what Killian had just said to her but never had the chance. Later in the episode when Ariel goes to back to Prince Eric but the EQ takes her voice the EQ says “The only thing worse about telling your prince how you feel and rejecting you is never telling him at all. Never knowing. Never having a chance at true love.” I think this is REALLY important.
Both Emma and Neal have told each other that they love each other but it’s not been a huge deal. First they said it when they thought Neal was going to die and Emma later made the comment that people sometimes say certain things when they think they are going to die. Then Emma told Neal that she loved him when she was telling him her secret – but he never said it back, and he never said it after they got out of the cave either.
Killian has now told Emma that she has made him realize that he can move on from his first love. That was his biggest secret because he is Captain Hook who has had the Villain reputation and who has been defined by 300 years of determination of seeking revenge. Telling this secret to anyone completely changes everyones impression of who he is. He had made it abundantly clear that he loves Emma even though he hasn’t said it yet – I think they are waiting for that to be a BIG moment. Emma has been terrified of being rejected which is why she always throws her walls up. I think this is why she has made such a big deal about the kiss not being a big deal – I think she is still afraid of being rejected so if she pretends that how she feels about Killian isn’t a big deal then she won’t be hurt if he rejects her. But the thing is, her biggest secret wasn’t how she felt about Killian because that isn’t a secret that she would NEVER tell another person – because when someone is your TL you will obviously tell someone that “secret.” Which is exactly why Killian’s secret couldn’t be that he loves Emma.
So, if I’m making any sense here: as the EQ said, the only thing worse about telling your prince how you feel and being rejected is never telling him at all. Never knowing, never having a chance at true love. They couldn’t use that opportunity to tell each other their secret that they love each other AND when Emma was going to respond to Killian’s secret, she was interrupted and the moment was gone.
The rest of the EQ’s speech is “That’s right dear, he’s gone. Time to swim back home.”
It may be that as part of the love triangle Emma’s biggest burden is going to be not telling Killian at all because things keep getting in her way. She has relied upon him in NL because it’s kind of “his” territory but when they “swim” home and have Henry back and, regardless of what happens with her and Neal, she and Neal are spending time with Henry – there won’t be as much interaction with Killian unless she MAKES it happen.
It will be interesting to see what Emma chooses to do.

YES. THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG. This is not a viable love triangle IN THE SLIGHTEST, THIS EPISODE PROVED THAT. It’s nothing more than a choice Emma has to make between her past and her future.

100% agreed. Actually it’s more than irritating…. it’s plain infuriating. But whatever! I’m trying not to get angry over a fictional tv show…. and failing miserably….

OF COURSE I DID. I NOTICED EVERY LOOK. ESPECIALLY HOW SHE LOOKED BACK AT HIM ON THE BRIDGE, HER FUTURE, BEFORE SHE TURNED BACK TO FACE HER PAST, NEAL. THAT BRIDGE WAS ABSOLUTELY SYMBOLIC.

Lol yes. It’s just so obviously clear that Snow really doesn’t know Emma at all – when she was MM she was FAR more perceptive, and I think that’s the difference here – Snow is projecting the story of her finding of love with Charming onto Emma, and is making WAY too many assumptions. Take for example, in 3×03 when she said
She just lost Neal.
And in 3×04 Emma says that
I lost him a long time ago.
Emma went to her to talk about the kiss as a friend, she wanted MM’s advice, the advice of the woman who told her about her walls keeping love out. Emma wanting to explore ANYTHING, especially emotional things, is a BIG.DEAL., and Snow just shut it down and made it about Neal. Ugh. It was totally awkward.
But I think Snow has realised now that she had the whole thing backwards – that Emma wanted to believe that Neal was dead in order to move on. That’s what the look on her face in the Echo Cave said to me.
LOL – I have to bring this up, the CS haters are latching on to the fact that Emma said it was “just a kiss” and was thus dismissing it. LOLOLOLOLOL. The way the CS haters watch this show continues to astound me. Emma said TWICE that it was “just a kiss” – methinks the lady doth protest too much. She brought it up to MM. If the haters think that Emma is going to gush over a kiss – ANY kiss, from ANYONE – then they don’t understand her character at all. With Emma, actions speak louder than words. She backed away when Neal said “Emma!”. She moved towards Killian after his love declaration. And after she said that it was “just a kiss” and received the love declaration – she walked right over to Neal and told him she wished he had died so she could move on. Because that’s what she wants to do – with Killian. She reiterated that outside the cave, that all she wants to do is move on from him, leave the pain behind. She explicitly told him she wishes he was dead rather than back in her life. She did it politely, but she still did it. And Neal just doesn’t get it.
