Yes Jenna!! You were the one who posted it!!! I saw it and immediately LOVED the theory – it NEVER occurred to me before but as soon as I read your idea I totally fell in love with it!
And I have to say, the more I think about it the more it makes sense to me. Like I said, since I haven’t thought about until now I haven’t looked for any clues that he could be the Wizard of Oz (oh darn, another excuse to go back and rewatch the whole series again LOL). But it does answer the question as to why so many of us have had a problem “bonding” with Neal – they were purposely holding him back because they were waiting to drop the big bomb that he is the Wizard of Oz and then are going to let him have this MASSIVE character explosion and not just this “blah” personality.
And if you think about it from a family tree perspective – his grandfather is this weird eccentric guy who turns into Peter Pan, his father is the Dark One Rumplestiltskin, his son is the Truest Believer, and he is just . . . Neal??? It doesn’t make ANY sense. He HAS to be SOMEONE very important – not just Rumple’s son.

Yeah, but that’s like saying I’m seven people: me, my mother’s daughter, my husband’s wife, my son’s mother, my grandmother’s granddaughter, my aunt’s niece, and my mother-in-law’s daughter-in-law. It doesn’t make me seven people, it’s just seven different ways of describing me.
But no, Neal doesn’t HAVE to be another fictional character in addition to being Neal but in the tradition of OUaT that seems to be what they go for for shock value. And, for me, I was waiting for Neal to be much more impactful than he was when they brought him on as “Neal” – so I wonder if the reason he hasn’t had more of an impactful role is because they are waiting to give us a “shocker” with an additional character for Neal as well.
I hope not to be honest I can’t stand that guy who plays Neal, nor the character either. Look everyone has at least two names except Regina and Emma. Rumple is a one man band what the Beast, Mr. Gold, Rumple there is such a thing as having one person being too many people in my opinion.

Very thought provoking discussion regarding Neal. I don’t connect to him either. I think when they give a character a fairy tale name it’s an automatic connection.

I’ll be another more lurking rather than posting for the next few weeks too- Life is VERY busy atm!
Agreed that Neal ‘has’ to be someone other than ‘just’ Rumple’s son & Henry’s dad- I mean even Emma is the “savior” on top of being Emma/Snowings daughter & Henry’s mother. Whether that’s the WoO or not, I dont know- but it is an interesting proposition to ponder on anyway.
I’m in total agreement that so far Neal’s story has pretty much been ‘boring’ – it’s just there & he seems to be being used as the plot device to end all plot devices…. He needs a real story, told from his pov- the only Neal centric story we’ve had to date, was to do with him & his father reconciling- in fact ALL Bae/Neal centric stuff has been father/son stuff to date- Neal is only marched out for Henry & Emma’s stories when there’s a need for a convenient plot device …. Neal needs his own tune to march too IMO.

Anyway, yea I agree. Neal should be some other fairy tale character, he should be! everyone else has their fairy tale character. I was actually thinking that maybe Neal is the Wizard of Oz since I can’t find any other fairy tale character that might fit him.
and like everyone else here, I sympathized with Bae when he was younger. Neal, I just… can’t………… even if I tried before knowing he’s Henry’s dad. I tried I really did.. :(… but he’s just some character I wont feel bad about when they cut him off. I would even feel more awful if they cut Grumpy off, but not with Neal. I am “ok” with him and I kinda like him but not enough for me to connect with him and feel bad if something awful happens to him in the show.
