Ok, I also sadly agree that Neal makes the most sense. He has never had his own storyline – it’s always about how he affects those around him – Emma, Rumple, Henry. He’s not really tied into the show, it’s not about HIS journey at all. I don’t know! I guess I’m kind of surprised either of them would die, honestly. But they sure did put Neal into the background in 3A – maybe that was on purpose.
Anyone think THAT is the “very good reason Neal didn’t show up”? (Other than not being Emma’s TL, of course!) Maybe he dies during the year they were apart.

I agree, he was in the background a lot in the first half. I’m not sure that was a build up towards his eventual death.

Maybe he does, maybe he dies later. We don’t know because the article never specifically stated when the episode would occur. But, if he did die during the one year gap, that would be a pretty serious reason to get Emma. I think Hook coming to get her, was a last-minute decision, a last resort. And if Neal was already gone by then, then maybe Hook really did have the best chance of succeeding.
Two thoughts that crossed my mind
1. A and E said that S3B would be a “new type” of storytelling. So what we see may not be a linear story and they may be telling the story like a “flashforward” in Lost. So even if all of series regulars are on set full time, and for every episode, we don’t know exactly WHEN in the narrative they will die.
2. Emma’s “I wished you were dead” speech to Neal. Was this foreshadowing? We don’t know when A and E decided to kill off this character (last year or more recently?). If it was planned for months, then I would say Neal. If it was a recent decision by the soon- to- be- deceased actor to leave then anything we saw in S3A would be null and void and frankly, this makes me nervous for Hook.
