I also think it’s significant, even with false memories, Emma still remembers Neal abandoning her and at some point, chose to tell Henry and Henry brought up that ‘not every guy is going to be like his dad’ and leave her. Of course, he was actually referring to Walsh but you can tell, Emma was really thinking about the sexy pirate in black and who he might have been to her in another life.
But this whole leaving Emma, the jail thing, there’s a reason why it keeps being brought up. Neal leaving was a big reason for her walls and continues to be, even in the fake life in New York. SwanFire really cannot work if Emma still has walls concerning him, and since she is back in Storybrooke and I assume, Neal is too — it still will not be an easy reunion.
The only person Emma does not have walls with, is Hook.

Obisgirl, I’m going to marry your post. 🙂 It’s so true…the more I think about it, the more I love their interactions in 3/12. Especially the table scene – how they are so completely comfortable with each other, even when discussing the soon-to-be-ex-monkey-man-boyfriend.
I was kind of surprised they mentioned the whole ‘Neal sent me to jail’ thing. The entire episode implied there were things in their subconscious they remembered. You would think, then, that given the relatively positive nature of their relationships with Neal before SB went poof, the memories of Neal would perhaps be more neutral. That though they didn’t remember meeting him in NY the year before, the suppressed memories would lead them to develop the false memories of discussions regarding Henry’s father less angry. Instead, both of them are still VERY hostile about Neal. And after Emma remembers everything, is there even mention of Neal? Clearly that was done on purpose.

I think there were some things that were done there were meant to show how much the previous year has changed Emma in a good way but were kind of done in a very subtle way so that they were hidden (in typical A and E fashion) so that if you only took them in context of what they currently talking about you don’t realize the positive implications they are setting up for CS.
The major one that comes to mind for me is that in 3A, although we all knew that Emma was telling Neal she no longer wants a relationship with him she never actually came out and said that – and even Hook told her that at some point she was going to have to make a choice. When Emma is making breakfast for Henry he asks her if she is thinking she didn’t make the right choice about Walsh and she kind of jokes about how she knows she made she right choice (because WE know he’s a monkey). But remember, she made her choice not to marry him BEFORE she knew that he was a monkey. She got her memories back, spent time with Hook being open with him about herself for the first time ever, then told Walsh that she couldn’t marry him (and she had told Hook to wait in her apartment while she went to tell Walsh that she couldn’t marry him). For someone who dated the guy for 8 months and loved him enough to consider marrying him and have him be a potential father for Henry, it is interesting that as soon as she gets her memories back and talks to Hook (and hears him tell her that there was nothing for him in the EF and that he came back to save her) she is suddenly able to make the CHOICE so quickly and easily NOT to marry Walsh AND she wants Hook to be there when she gets back from doing it. What is this in direct contrast too?? Neal and Tamara. Yep Henry, Emma most definately made the right choice and she knows it.
I have the feeling a lot of this season is going to be set up from Hook’s perspective of not understanding that TLK didn’t work because Emma didn’t know who she was. In other words, I think we are going to be seeing things on the surface and things are going to be written as Hook is going to be interpreting them – on the assumption that Emma is his True Love but he isn’t hers. So we don’t have the discussion that Emma has been dreaming about Hook for the past year but she refers to him as as “Ghost.” Hence, the reason for no hug after she gets her memories back.
The comment that Emma made after she found out that Walsh was a monkey? I’m wondering if that was even meant to throw us off. She never said she couldn’t have a relationship. She said she was never safe and the life she wanted and thought she could have she never really could. I think that is just what Hook was interpreting. I actually think now she just meant that she was never safe in the REAL world and the life she thought she wanted in the REAL world where things are “normal” is not in the cards for the savior. I don’t think she was necessarily throwing her walls back up again. The comment she made to Henry about it just being the two of them for awhile? She HAD to tell him that – he doesn’t have his memories of anything else, I don’t think she was saying she isn’t going to consider anything with Hook right now.
I’ve watched the episode several times now and I am actually very certain that Emma has already chosen Hook but now has to move forward in an odd way because Henry doesn’t have his memories back. But since Hook doesn’t think Emma feels the same way about him there is going to be a lot of “miscommunication” going on where it is going to seem like they are only super close friends – he isn’t going to understand that she is in love with him.
OR, and @StelioKontos you may be on to something here – we might be in for the biggest surprise yet. What if the hug was taken out for another reason??? What if we didn’t see everything that happened that night?? Several people have asked, just as a general question, where was Hook staying in NYC?? I think this a very valid question and here is what, at first, I thought was a crazy theory but now that I have watched the episode several times I am not so sure. First, the hug is gone. Why?? Maybe it wasn’t scripted. Or maybe they decided that they wanted to keep the audience in the dark. Next, Emma and Hook are drinking rum together again and talking. Hook is being incredibly direct with Emma – there was nothing for me in the EF, I came back to save you – she knows exactly what he is saying. Emma is totally open with him for the first time ever – telling him who she was (just who are you Swan) and about Walsh. The big one for me – she tells Hook to wait there while she breaks up with Walsh. Now here’s where I kind of fill in the blanks for myself. Please don’t try to tell me that you don’t need a MAJOR drink after you find out the guy you were considering marrying was a monkey. And she had already told Hook to wait there. And she said they were leaving the next morning. And where was Hook staying????? Emma just got her memories back, had been drinking with Hook, told him to stay there, found out her boyfriend is a monkey, they are leaving the next morning, she has got to be freaked out, she is now FINALLY comfortable talking to Hook openly about her feelings, he has made it clear that he came back for her once again, he is probably not staying anywhere decent. If you are Emma do you say, “Okay, thanks for stopping by. Leave my luxury apartment and go back to the streets of Manhattan or wherever you’ve been staying, see you at 8:00 am.” No, you need your rum drinking buddy to hang out with you while you calm yourself after discovering that your ex was a monkey. THAT is when Emma finds out where he is staying and tells him to just stay there with her for the night. Think about it. Henry took one bite of eggs and said he had to get going or he would be late for school because SHE KIND OF OVERSLEPT THIS MORNING. And she smiled and said she made the right choice about Walsh because making a choice has multiple implications for Emma – one of which may have become abundantly clear that she made the right one last night! Why do people oversleep???? They are tired, they are hungover, they aren’t REALLY oversleeping but are, um, doing other things, they are trying to sneak someone out of the apartment so they can appear to be showing back up in the morning???? So when Hook shows up for their trip, does he have any belongings with him?? Nope, no reason he couldn’t have spent the night, only to turn right around to pretend he was showing up in the morning for Henry’s sake. Henry asks “When are we leaving?” Emma says “Right now.” Cue knocking on the door. How convenient. And in struts an incredibly confident and cocky Killian Jones. Um, WOW what a MAJOR change from the depressed and uncertain looking Hook we saw when Emma was talking to him about Walsh. At first I attributed it to the fact that Emma had broken up with Walsh and they are heading out on an adventure together again but now I’m not so sure. Something about the way he looks at her. Seriously, this is Hook at his finest. And remember what he told her in Neverland? After she saves Henry and they get back, that’s when the fun begins? He reminded her the night before she has the most important thing – Henry. I think maybe the fun began. This is also the first time we hear Emma call him Killian. Which we are supposed to think is for Henry’s sake but if they have just, um, I’m guessing she’s calling him Killian now. And Emma is a bit flustered with what to tell Henry about Hook – kind of like she would be if she was trying to cover up the fact she just slept with this guy and wants to make sure Henry doesn’t know about it and she is a bit light-headed because sex on legs just strutted back into her apartment?? Even though we are supposed to think she is trying to figure out what to tell Henry about Hook?? Because they probably didn’t already come up with what they were going to tell him – but then again, I would I lose my train of thought if he walked into my house too!
Okay, one other thing:

Henry: Are you expecting someone?
Emma: (Looks at Henry and gets a very slow SECURE smile) Yeah. (Then looks toward the door).Yes, Emma is expecting someone!!!! She KNOWS Hook is going to show up because he ALWAYS comes back for her. And the thing about this scene is she REALIZES that she KNOWS he will come back for her.
“Try something new darling, it’s called trust.” She trusts him now and she knows it!! Yay!!
On the note, we don’t know where Hook was staying. He could have gone back to where he was staying before showing up again at Emma’s apartment the next morning.
But an even funnier scenario, would be that he never left. Like maybe he camped out outside her apartment the whole time and waited until both her and Henry woke up to at least have breakfast together and then make his entrance.

Another think I was thinking about was that what if the hug may not have been cut but part of flashbacks for a later episode if they go back and show that Emma was being followed or something? Idk probably not but it seems weird they cut BOTH hugs in that episode.
I love your post @rumplegoldfan! I’ve only watched the episode once so I’m missing the subtle details. I agree with you that Emma has already chosen. I think the “that;s quite a ship you captain there swan” followed by Emma’s “good” were A and E telling us that a choice had already been made but put on hold due to the circumstances. Scenes like that comfortable conversation between Hook and Emma at the apartment is what I want to see more of this half season. As much as I want the kisses and implied sex I find their heart to hearts to be more intimate. We only ever see this side of Emma with Hook.
I too was wondering where he spent the night. As much as I would love, LOVE, for him and Emma to have shared a bed I don’t think it would have happened so soon. I did read your post several time and trust me, it put a HUGE smile on my face just considering it. That morning swagger of his, yum…..

Did any of you ever watch the original CSI?? Back when it was good?? I called for months and months and months (maybe even seasons) that Grissom and Sara were already together but were keeping it a secret from everyone. There were all these subtle little clues if you looked carefully.
Regardless, I can’t wait to see what they do with the rest of the season
RGF- HOLY CRAP I’VE SEEN THE WHOOPIE THEORY BUT NEVER REALLY THOUGHT IT COULD BE TRUE UNTIL I READ YOUR POST!!!! seriously I’m sitting here at work trying not to look like a ridiculously excited fangirl. It’s an epic fail.
But honestly I kind of hope they didn’t because if they pull a “surprise” a la Booth/Bones and Sara/Grissom I am going to be seriously PO’d!!! Yeah, I wanna see it! that it happened behindthe scenes stuff is crap.
My new headcannon- and I haven’t seen sneak peek 2 yet so it might already be proven wrong – Killian did stay there all night. They did talk all night. Emma maybe even voiced her feelings to Kilian, giving him that lil swagger walking in the next morning…but stopped just short of the ‘fun’ Hook promised….
