I’m going to put this out there: as someone else mentioned earlier, things were said in episodes 1 and 2 that I imagine the writers now regret. Regina’s “with a simple kiss” comment to Maleficent makes no sense coming from a woman who had previously (timeline-wise) told Belle that any curse can be broken by true love’s kiss. Now, occasionally, we’ll find reason to have to ignore these comments, but I think they’re largely contained to the first two episodes of the series. Mentioning that Maleficent attacked both the Aurora we see AND her mother may be a cover for this, or it may be simply to account for the fact that the story of “Sleeping Beauty” exists in our storybooks—meaning it must have happened pre-curse in some form—but is also now happening post-curse.
As far as the wraith goes, it’s really pretty simple, but then as a long-time sci-fi fan I have WAY too much practice re-piecing timelines in my head. 😀 I don’t hear anyone asking “are there two Emmas and two Snows?” so I don’t understand why people are asking if there are two wraiths or two medallions. 🙂 As Daniel explained, all that we see in FTL happened after what we see in SB.
Here is the wraith’s timeline:
-Gold had the medallion for who knows how long, uses it to mark Regina’s hand.
-Gold uses the medallion to summon the wraith, which takes the medallion around its neck as soon as it appears in SB (I went back and watched for this).
-SB people fight the wraith and send it into the hat taking Emma and Snow (and the medallion still around its neck) with it.
-The wraith is transported to FTL by the hat, bursts out of the ground in front of Mulan, leaving Emma and MM unconscious in the hole.
-Phillip cuts the medallion off the wraith’s neck with his sword and picks it up, and then the rest of the FTL story happens.[adrotate group="5"]Jeremy LaughlinParticipantOn the age issue, Bae could easily still be alive if, as Gold said, he travled through TIME and space.
As far as whether Pinocchio is an interesting character, I’ll say this: while I actually liked the Disney movie telling that story when I was young, I can’t say that in my older years I’ve cared much for ANY fairytale character. Yet, I love this show and I have more interest in fairytales now than I would have thought possible as a result. My feeling is that if these writers decide to make Pinocchio an important character, he’s going to be awesome. Let’s face it: Snow White was a tad lame until OUaT happened. 😉
Jeremy LaughlinParticipantHere’s the thing: Storybrooke has featured Jiminy Cricket prominently, Geppetto from time to time, and even someone we think could very well, somehow, have been Monstro (if a man can be turned into a cricket, why not a whale?). Meanwhile Pinocchio himself has been very oddly absent in Storybrooke … or has he? From the standpoint of putting together a complete story I don’t know why else Pinocchio would be missing unless there have been casting issues or he’s somewhere outside of Storybrooke for some other reason.
While watching the ep., as soon as Mother Superior said that he’d found his father but hadn’t spoken to him yet, I realized it was very likely not really Bae. I whispered to Dan that it could still go either way (Bae or Pinocchio) and he looked at me like I was crazy. 😉 I was right about the not-Bae part, but we’ll likely know in a few days about the rest!
I actually didn’t like the Pinocchio theory either, at first, but that’s largely because it’s not my favorite story. Someone earlier pointed out that they make the fairytales quite a bit more awesome, in general, so even if August is Pinocchio I’m sure we’ll enjoy the story.
Jeremy LaughlinParticipantAh, the problem with user-generated content. 🙁 I kind of wondered about that, since season two hasn’t even been officially ordered yet, as far as I know.

Ok that makes sense. Ooo maybe Dr. Whale was in on tampering the results? He’s already hinted that he’s on Regina’s side when he called her after John Doe had brain activity.
Nice! I wouldn’t be surprised. 🙂

I thought about this as well and I’ll be very disappointed if they go this route. I just feel like that’s too easy of an explanation for these writers. MY question is why haven’t they shown us the heart? There are clearly two different hearts we’ve seen: the glowing red hearts that can easily be ripped out in FTL and an actual human heart. Graham was still alive in SB even though Regina had his “glowing heart” so perhaps Kathryn’s “glowing heart” was in that box? But wouldn’t Emma look at it and be like “What the hell kind of heart is this?!” I really think there is more to be revealed here.
I don’t think it’s too easy as much as I think it’s beside the point. We’ve always know Regina was framing first David and then MM; the supposed DNA test is just a part of that, and I’d image that the writers have always intended the main question to be whether Kathryn was alive or not. It’s always been a possibility that the heart didn’t belong to Kathryn and that the test results had been tampered with. It’s just a given that Regina could have made that happen.
Jeremy LaughlinParticipantI don’t think Kathryn was dead at all, but I think having her turn up was Gold’s “magic.” Not sure whether that “magic” is literal or figurative, though.
Jeremy LaughlinParticipantRegina has, we can assume, quite a collection of hearts. Dead hearts. She was about to add the one the Huntsman brought her thinking he’d taken it from Snow non-magically after killing her. One from her collection is a small price to pay to frame MM (and she may get the heart back in the end anyway). Regina can conjure false phone records, so intercepting and altering lab test results shouldn’t be too difficult, “proving” that this heart belongs to Kathryn. I still think Kathryn is being held somewhere alive.

The episode was great but I’ve noticed a lot of people aren’t really talking about Mary’s fingerprints on and inside the box with Kathryn’s heart.
Surely I’m not the only one who believe’s that fingerprints who belong to a character in FTL carries over into SB…
Someone (maybe it was you?) emailed us with this same thought; brilliant! I hadn’t thought of it. We’ve seen Fairytale artifacts show up in Storybrooke, but I think in my mind I almost regarded them as though they were copies, even though that isn’t really what I thought. I was also thinking of the box as being Regina’s. I figured Regina just falsified the fingerprint records/search results.
Jeremy LaughlinParticipantThanks for the screen cap, Mia! So the city logo is definitely an apple tree, which makes total sense, and now we can speculate as to what is underneath it. 🙂
