KebParticipant
It was a great series–my parents had taped most of the episodes so I knew several of them by heart as a kid. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for some fun watching to pass the time between Once eps.

KebParticipantWell, I think he did a good job of staying in character as Mr. Gold for most of Season 1, actually, because even Regina–though she suspected as soon as he started to get very specific with his pleases–wasn’t sure for several months that he had his memories back (day after Emma’s birthday to Valentine’s day). So I think the Mr. Gold we know is pretty close to the pure SB Mr. Gold.

KebParticipantYeah, Regina seemed a little horrified at the idea of her mother becoming the Dark One. Also, I suspect that a lack of empathy is part of the Dark One curse–it’s what makes it so easy for Dark One Rumple to kill and control people. I think it’s somewhat balanced out by Mr. Gold, and there’s reason to believe that the Dark One curse is not as strong in our world–or at least that several elements didn’t carry over.

KebParticipantI think he’s scared, too–of Henry and of being apart from his dagger again. You’re not going to see him venturing out of Storybrooke in a hurry again, either. There are a lot of people who know too many of his secrets now, and at least two people yet who would happily see him dead.

KebParticipantRumple is very, very careful about words and lies plenty through omission, but most of the time when he does tell you things, he tells the (at least literal) truth. I don’t think we can bank on him making the whole thing up in this case.

KebParticipantYeah, though it was fun having the four princesses up against the queen and the pirate for a bit. And fun seeing Charming finally have the chance to have the son he always wanted with Henry.

KebParticipantI think that the price is a bit like the universe balancing itself. Just like in physics where if you exert a force there’s always a cost in energy, where every action has an equal and opposite reaction, magic isn’t free even if it can temptingly look free. I think that’s why the price for strong magic is so much higher, and why dark magic seems so much stronger–the evil users are willing to pay a higher price generally (like killing the person they love most, for example).

KebParticipantI found myself wondering today whether Regina and Gold had gotten those roses from Game of Thorns.

KebParticipantIf you kill a person (within certain parameters), you become as evil as the person you killed.
As Regina said, Gold stole Cora’s life. It’s possible that the price for using that magic is that, in some way, you become as evil as the person whose life was taken. Maybe Rumple -is- Cora now. *shudder*
But that would explain a turn toward the darker part of himself.

KebParticipantI just don’t think Rumple would do that. He knows it’s not real love and I don’t think he’s as desperate as Regina–the man put up with almost three centuries to get back to Bae, far more reviled and lonely than Regina’s been for most of her life (she had her father’s love up till she killed him for the curse, for example, and Sidney’s until she locked him away in the asylum, and Henry’s for a third of the curse…and she might not recognize it but she still does have Henry’s love). He looked horrified that Cora would remove her own heart, which suggests he never even considered the option despite his pain. He didn’t believe anyone COULD love him by the time he met Belle, and then he spent several years believing she was dead.
Was thinking today as I rewatched the first couple eps how very lonesome everyone in the extended family was at some point. Emma was alone–she told her “date” how she had no friends and no family she knew of. Henry, likewise, doesn’t have any real friends his own age; he’s got his mom, his therapist, and his teacher when he goes out to find Emma and at that time he believed that Regina was just pretending to love him, was willing to steal MM’s credit card, and while he liked Archie, hated that people would think he was crazy. Snow was intentionally kept lonely–that was Regina’s revenge–and David was in a coma and then amnesia and then a loveless marriage with Kathryn that Regina had trapped him into. Rumple didn’t have a friend in the town because they were all scared of him, even after he got his memories back. Bae had been abandoned in another realm (or more) for a couple hundred years, and then when he found love, he had to abandon Emma. And then there’s Belle locked up for three decades of almost complete isolation…and all the other lonely people (like Geppetto) rendered that way by the curse.
I think that’s actually why I liked Tiny so much–it was the story of someone else stuck in that lonely position for so long who found a family. (Also, nobody died in that episode and while the last few episodes have been amazing–they’ve also been really sad. Tiny actually had some happiness.)
But Rumple came to accept his loneliness, at least for a time, with the hope that he would someday find Bae as the Seer said. I don’t think Regina can accept that for herself, perhaps because she doesn’t have anything specific she’s hoping for except vengeance and going back to her victory in the Curse, when she had the power and Henry.
