This was the tweet that started the uproar:
It was a completely innocuous comment, the sort of shipping comment that these guys get all the time, which he felt the need to respond to in that fashion. And keep in mind this was also around the time that Ginny Goodwin posted tweets that equated a relationship between two women as pornography (which she never apologized for I might add), so people were already stirred up. Strangely when male/female relationships were asked about, they answered them politely, or at least not offensively. Hmmm, interesting.
Anders then tweeted this:
Tweet 2 (Warning – his tweet contains profanities)
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. Just because you know people who are gay, or are of a certain race or skin color, or whatever group, it does NOT give you a free pass to make offensive jokes about them. And you most certainly do not get to dictate to them whether they find it offensive or not. That’s decided by those who receive the comments.
Then Horowitz got involved, because people were tweeting him about it, and he was forced to give out a statement that he was sure they weren’t ‘those sort of people’, ‘we believe in love and equality for all’, etc, etc – the usual PR face saving stuff.
Then, presumably because his bosses or minders got to him, Anders then suddenly issued a suitably groveling apology.
I think that comment at the bottom of the pic is most telling, ‘I’m just sick of people telling me I don’t belong on tv‘
Which would have been the end of it, but he or his team obviously felt the need for more. In a cynical, and somewhat patronizing move, he then started tweeting pics of himself with Tony Amendola and a number with Lana Parrilla, who *GASP* is Latino and big LGBT supporter. Real smooth – not. I bet his PR team thought they were being exceptionally clever.
So, the whole thing was a fiasco. He’s just a really skeezy guy, his character is skeezy, and I hope they keep Ruby far away from him on the show. I’m sorta glad they cut his role back as well, plus there are too many characters anyway. And that pic he posted? It still doesn’t give him the right, or a free pass, to make homophobic comments. Sorry, it doesn’t. I wonder what his ‘friends’ would make of his comments in fact? Maybe they might just be a little uncomfortable, or disappointed, eh?

kiwiParticipantDavid Anders is very blunt and very crass. Basically, you don’t follow the guy on Twitter unless you can handle some swearing in your timeline now and then…and by “some swearing” I mean every cuss in the book. Many people find that offensive. Doesn’t bother me personally. If not for these forums being PG, I’d be swearing up an effing storm all over the place myself. Anyway, aside from his foul mouth, he’s also a very professional, talented and accomplished actor, and a lovely guy, as evidenced by the interview he did for the podcast.
I’m not disputing his acting ability – he wouldn’t continue to get work if he was no good at the craft I guess. But if your definition of “lovely guy” is someone who made the type of racist, sexist and homophobic tweets that he did, then I’m sorry but we’ll have to agree to disagree.

kiwiParticipantDavid Anders will also be returning in S3!
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Quirk that will release later this month, David Anders, the man behind the charming-yet-slightly-tragic Dr. Whale/Victor Frankenstein, revealed that he will be returning to Storybrooke in Season 3. Sadly, we won’t see the doctor in the first episode, but Anders’ “I will be back!” is enough to get us excited for his eventual return.
Meh. After his disgusting twitter comments, I went completely off the whale/franky character. When they abandoned his storyline mid season 2 that was one bizarre writing choice I didn’t mind – the guy is a jerk. (But we lost Ruby too *cry* – although Megan leaving meant we didn’t have to see Whale try and sleep with her, thank goodness. Still can’t believe they wanted to have a whale/ruby romance – yuck). It’s a shame, because I found that black and white world very fascinating too. But after what he said, it completely ruined it for me. Hopefully more Gepetto for me, and Archie too.

kiwiParticipantI never said someone can’t find love with another person after their first love. As for Emma’s relationship history, in Heart Is A Lonely Hunter she says to MM, “One-nighters is as far as I ever go,” which suggests she’s done her fair share of “dating”.
But ‘dated’ who? You automatically assume a man, based on one relationship she had when she was 17 – we know nothing else. That’s a huge assumption.
Well we dunno that Regina and Daniel never went for a roll in the hay and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.
More big assumptions. I don’t dispute she loved him – deeply. He may have even been her true love – but he’s dead now, and ain’t coming back. And she was incredibly naive at that age – not the sexually powerful force we saw late as Evil Queen. That she might have bedded both men and women during her reign wouldn’t shock me – as we saw she was not averse to using her physical and sexual attributes as a weapon.
It seems people are determining their entire sexual identities on a little actual information. We simply don’t know enough. Emma is completely based on one relationship that she had when she was 17 and that she ‘dated’ – that could mean anything, man or woman. Regina is based on one relationship she had when she was a girl, and her trysts with Graham. As you say Leopold is an unknown, and fair cop, although given the medieval type world they exist in, it’s well known how wives were expected to submit to their husbands. And how old is Regina? Three relationships in her whole life, and almost every interaction with a man has been disastrous. She might have better luck batting for the other team.
As for the issue of Regina killing Emmas mother? Well, on this show that sort of thing isn’t really a problem is it? – all the characters are incredibly messed up. Rumple tried to kill Belles father, not to mention assaulted her in the hospital by kissing her when she had no idea who he was – nobody seems to mind Rumbelle. Plus the whole Lacey fiasco. They are seen as very cute. And what about Hook? He was sleeping with Henrys grandmother, but now he’s going to get together with one of Henry’s mothers? Don’t forget he sold her out to be tortured and resulted in Henry being kidnapped, plus betrayed her to her mother with resulted in all that trauma she went through. And Neal is Henry’s father, and Emma’s ex, but people want him with Regina? Everyone in this town is insane – it doesn’t matter who you pair up, their is always going to be some bizarro thing that’s happened. Like I said though, I’m still rooting for further Regina & Henry relationship progression and her happiness – I don’t care who. Just automatic dismissal of characters because its not the “norm” annoys me. We should be open realistic options – the show is set in the current day too. All shows these days are so samey.

kiwiParticipantWhen they do finally have a same-sex couple, and they will definitely do it, I image it would a fringe couple, too.
If that’s the case, then I hope they don’t have any gay relationships on the show. It would be insulting, offensive and to be perfectly honest patronizing. Tokenism at it’s finest. They would need to at the least be main characters – of some description. It would basically be saying, gay people are not worthy of being main characters – that’s reserved for straight people. This also touches on the issue of PoC’s on OUAT – as in their aren’t many. (And those that are are either killed off, or are cast in stereotypical villain rolls. The show is very white, middle class, very un-diverse).
And Pro Tip: The way you talked about gay people possibly appearing on the show- that they would have to be fringe characters – that’s incredibly insulting and offensive.

kiwiParticipantRumplesGirl wrote:I want a homosexual couple on OUAT, I think it’d be great! But I think it should be a different story, and not just in service of the fans who want Regina and Emma together or Regina and *insert another female here.* They’ve played with gender before (Jack) so it could be that Aladdin will be a girl or something along those lines.
Putting SwanQueen together would feel so forced. Neither Regina or Emma have ever given any indication that they’re anything but straight, and changing both of their orientations now would be unbelievable. When I was posting about Wendy being a mother figure for the Lost Boys before, I thought it’d be kind of a bummer if she was stuck in NL without a romantic partner, so maybe they could hook her up with Tiger Lily? On tumblr there are people all over with role playing blogs, and people send in questions and they answer in character. Came across one the other day where someone asked a Henry RPer, what if when he grows up, his true love ends up being a boy. The RPer replied as Henry basically saying, “Well then, he’d be a boy. And we’d probably have lots of sword fights.” Anyway, I guess Henry would only get a romantic partner if the show runs for several more years, so who knows if it would even eventuate, no matter if he’s straight or gay. I think though that if they do want to have a gay couple, they can’t really mess around with any of the traditionally known straight pairings. If they do it like that, it just makes it feel like a forced thing, just for the sake of having a gay couple as a means of being politically correct. So I think it’d be more likely for them to take characters who don’t traditionally have an epic true love story with the opposite gender, and give them a true love of the same gender instead.
So, once you’ve been with someone, that’s it for the rest of your life then? And you can never meet someone (of either gender) and find love with them? Emma has been with one man that we know of (although she had an affair with a married person) when she was 17. Regina was never in a consensual intimate relationship until later – Leopold doesn’t count as it was a forced marriage. She would have been required to service him – and of course Daniel but they never consummated it. Their was Graham, but that was, hmmm, to scratch an itch shall we say. Their was no ‘love’ involved. I think it’s a bit much to say either of them is straight or wouldn’t find love with a women – and Emma dear, you’re not helping looking so very very butch. Their are people that have lived their whole lives one way, got married, even had children, and then they meet that certain person – and it just clicks. Past relationships don’t lock you in for love. That’s not how life works.
Personally, I don’t ship swan Queen, mainly because I find Emma as a character so very annoying LOL. But I get what the Swan Queen shippers are getting at. Those two are very strong, dominating characters, and are constantly each others foil – they challenge each other, they get each other (sort of like what Emma mentioned on the show I guess – she knows her). And they share the kid, and importance wise they are about equal on the show – they balance, so to speak. And can you imagine the drama it would create? The evil queen falling in love with the child of her greatest enemy and the very person who took her first love away. The person who took her love, is then is giving it back. The writers would a field day. I feel some sympathy for the SQ shippers to be honest. If snows kid had been a boy, and they got some pretty faced dude to play him, every man and their dog would probably be shipping it, but two women? Everyone frowns on it all of a sudden. And as I noted earlier, it’s 2013, not the 1950’s.
I just want Regina to end up happy, and have a good relationship with her son. Her relationship with Henry is more interesting to me than who she shacks up with really. If that’s with Hook, Emma or whomever, I don’t much care – Just someone who will love her and NOT try to control and manipulate her. Well, anyone but Neal I suppose. He just seems like such a scumbag – I still have trouble equating him to the sweet child Bae was to current day Neal who betrayed and abandoned Emma. I wish he was more like young Bae. Even a new character like Robin Hood or whatever would be ok. But I feel given Regina’s importance as a character, they’d want a decently important character to match her with, unless they go the Daniel route and get a super normal person, who is incredibly sweet and loving towards her. Not sure which I’d prefer tbh.

kiwiParticipantIt could be SB Sidney escaping from the hospital, with flashbacks to maybe how he ended up in the lamp – parallels of escape and imprisonment. And yeah, he could be connected to Neverland or Pan or Tink somehow as well. Pan has been plotting for many years so, like Rumple, could have crossed paths with many of the main characters pasts and past family members.

kiwiParticipantThe only option we can see is Regina finds a new man…
This attitude always makes me chuckle lol. You guys do know it’s 2013, right? Not the 1950’s. We even abolished slavery and woman are equal to men these days too! (OK, so that’s still a work in progress)
Why only a man? Why not a woman? Or, and I have Mr Horowitz to thank for this when he said about Emma’s love life “Who or What” WHAT!! HA!(He is so sassy! LOL.), why even a human? Given the very fantastical nature of this show, their are plenty of non-human beings they’ll encounter. Why could she not fall in love with a Fae, or some other creature of magic, or some whole new being that they dream up even. I have to say, I’m a little over the whole lets bring on to the show yet another stubbly faced, pretty boy to try and woo the shows ladies. Really? That’s only been done on, oh, I don’t know…… pretty much every show for the last 30 years. It’s so very, very tired and predictable. New ideas please Mr Horowitz and Kitsis! They seem pretty clued up though – so I expect they’ll come up with the unexpected!

kiwiParticipantThis is fantastic. I’m not ashamed to admit that when I saw this I screamed a little bit. OK, I screamed a lot. LOL. After Regina and Maleficent, Sidney Glass is my fav character on the show, and Giancarlo is a awesome actor. WooHoo!

kiwiParticipantI agree with most of this – shipping wars just lead to bad vibes. I don’t ship any parings, but I love the content generated around them by others – people are sooo talented. All the various ships seem plausible to some degree. For me, I get angry when people hate on what people want to ship. It doesn’t hurt anybody to ship a pairing – why be so cruel? That’s just mean, right? My latest gripe as regards ship hating is Swan Queen. Really? It’s not the 1950’s any more kiddies. Two women in a loving relationship is a real thing these days. Why do people feel the need to mindlessly hate on it? I don’t ship them as a pair, but it feels wrong to hate on those who ship it. I just wish everyone could ship what they want without feeling the need to have a jab – it all just seems needlessly petty. That’s why I’m steering clear of shipping pretty much (the only relationship I liked was Regina/Daniel but that only lasted one episode 😥 ) Anywho, we should all just try to get along and be pleasant to each other. It’s not good to be fighting. So I totally agree with the original post – let’s all get along!!
