ModeratorAs for how long Rumple was the dark one, based on several pieces of evidence, I have his becoming the Dark One in 1860. Yes, yes, I KNOW that’s not 300 years. Guess what? They play fast and loose with the timeline a LOT.
But Baelfire fell into OUR WORLD (Adam was quite insistent about that) and looked up and saw Big Ben. Big Ben was not completed until 1858. Having him go in 1861 works.
And what I did was, before that point, I’d assumed 300 years as Rumple’s age. When I made his age 200 years at the point that Emma comes to Storybrooke…it fixed things so that Baelfire could go to Victorian London in our world without too much hassle.
So Rumple was the dark one for 150 years, give or take, though 28 of those years he was just Mr. Gold and time wasn’t moving for him. That still allows comments about “centuries” and “a couple hundred” for Neal’s and Killian’s ages to be close enough to correct. They have never said IN THE SHOW that Rumple was 300, though that was clearly their initial estimate. In the show, I’ve only caught references to his being centuries old or having been the dark one for centuries. 150 is more than one, 200 is a couple (and I assume he was around 50 when he became the DO, based in part on Bobby’s age and in part on some logical reasoning about Bae’s age in relation).
Yes, it’s a mess, and I’m not sure what to do with the timeline markers in this episode right now. I’m eager to see what Adam might say to clarify the 200 years one…because while I’ll buy that Zoso’s life as DO was fairly brief, Nimue would have had some time and there is the suggestion of a LOT of other DOs in the episode. I don’t buy that they all squeeze into 50 years.
The problem still is that Merlin clearly states in the Nimue portion of the flashbacks that it had been 500 years ago that he drank from the grail. They said that Merlin finding the grail took place 1000 years before Arthur, meaning that there should be a difference of 500 more years between when Nimue became the Dark One and when Arthur became King, not 200.

ModeratorI think “Birth” is most likely referring to the birth of Emma’s Dark Swan persona, not the birth of Zelena’s baby. This episode is apparently supposed to reveal the detals of what Emma did.

ModeratorI agree that “200 years” was probably a typo, because Merlin mentioned that it had been 500 years since he drank the grail during the Nimue centric flashback, which would put it 500 years before Arthur, not 200. We’ve complained before about them previously just saying “a long time ago” or “many years ago” for flashbacks, but perhaps wishing for specific numbers is making things even more confusing. Had we simply gotten “a long time ago” for last night’s flashbacks, the timeline wouldn’t have been as much of an issue.
Yes, both the hat and the Dark One Vault were left out of this flashback. Unless they’re saving the Dark One Vault explanation specifically for another episode? It’s strange that it wouldn’t be mentioned, when it’s appeared as recently as this Season. I don’t think it was ever said that the hat was made specifically with the dagger in mind, but rather that the Dark One wanted to take advantage of its power. The main thing about the hat that remains unexplained is why Merlin would need a magic-sucking hat to begin with.

ModeratorSo, either Hook kills Merlin with the sword (the name on the sword transfers to Hook) OR someone untethers it from Merlin and tethers it to Hook
Merlin’s name has been suspiciously absent from all the shots of Excalibur in present day Storybrooke. We’ve seen the sword clearly from both sides with no name attached, too. In particular, when Rumple drops it at the end of 506. So I think Merlin somehow got untethered from Excalibur before they all returned to Storybrooke.

ModeratorWell, after tonights episode I guess this makes a little more sense.
<iframe id=”twitter-widget-0″ scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ allowtransparency=”true” allowfullscreen=”true” class=”twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered” style=”position: static; visibility: visible; display: block; width: 100%; height: 612.5px; padding: 0px; border: none; max-width: 500px; min-width: 220px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;” data-tweet-id=”654655275891163136″ title=”Twitter Tweet”></iframe>
<script async=”” src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>Hook will be the next Merlin in terms of being controlled by Excalibur.
My guess is that Hook and Rumple’s battle will be to determine which side Excalibur will snuff out, Light or Darkness. Rumple will represent the Light, while Emma will control Hook to represent the Dark.

ModeratorI’m not surprised. The Bear King seems like a breather episode in between more “important” ones.
I have a feeling that “The Bear King” was the extra episode that ABC ordered, and wasn’t originally conceived back when Season 5 was in planning stages. Initially we were told that we were getting a 10/12 split, but now 5A is 11 episodes. However, given that Adam said that Season 5 is now 23 episodes total as a result of ABC giving them an extra episode, it seems like 5B is still 12 episodes as planned. That would make sense with Adam saying that “Broken Heart” was never written as the winter finale.

ModeratorI’m also wondering if they’re going to claim that Milah gave it to him. I’m not sure what I’d think about that twist. Parts of it would be satisfying and parts kinda icky.
No ,I think it is more likely that he got the ring from dear old dad. There is an upcoming flashback with him and Hook, after all.

ModeratorIt feels like the promo is almost all from “Birth”, with “The Bear King” episode not getting any focus.

ModeratorHere are the TV Grim Reaper and TVByTheNumber’s current predictions:

Not much of a difference. Aside from the Shondaland dramas, it should be noted that Agents of SHIELD also has a higher renewal chance than OUAT solely because the Syndication Gods will very likely give it a 4th Season. The Mindy Project was the first 3rd Season show in a very long time to get cancelled, but that was because it wasn’t actually produced by FOX itself. However, Mindy did technically still get its 4th Season via Hulu, which goes to show that syndication value still plays a role. Agents of SHIELD, on the other hand, is produced by ABC Studios, so it should be safe for renewal regardless. OUAT will likely still be renewed at this rate, but still that’s 4 dramas that take precedence over it for now.
Predictions for tonight, episode 507 “Nimue”?
I’d say we’ll see a slight uptick if anything, to a 1.6. But mostly steady at the 1.5
Agreed.
