Unless the real reason is MRJ wanting out and ABC is trying keep that hush hush.

MRJ’s a professional. If he’s contractually obligated to give a final interview, then he’d give it, and because he’s a decent guy, he’d keep it as diplomatic as possible if that were the case. He’s not a vindictive type of person, so there’s no reason I could imagine ABC putting a gag order on him.

Do you guys think Hook knew that Rumple and Neal were in the same body (which is still so weird for me to type)? Those hospital scenes just flashed into my head and I remember how odd and out of place they felt for me. He really does know more than he’s letting on with everyone. Maybe Hook wasn’t calling Neal the villain…maybe he was actually calling Rumple the villain because he knew they were one and the same even if Neal didn’t know it at that time. When Neal jumped up to try to go to Emma to help find his father, maybe that’s when Hook actually saw Neal as Neal again and that’s why he hugged him. He knew what was coming for him and he wasn’t going to keep Neal from finding out the truth and spending that time with Emma. I’m honestly annoyed now if Hook knows all this information and has been keeping it away from everyone else.

If he did know then there are only 2 people who could have told him: Zelena or Belle. I guess maybe 3 if you count Lumiere. But he left everyone and didn’t go back, so I’d rule Belle out. Assuming he was off looking for and sailing on his ship, we can rule Lumiere out because he was landlocked. Which only leaves Zelena, and I haven’t been on board with that theory because why would she send Walsh to keep Emma away and also Hook with a memory potion to bring her back? Hook is obviously hiding SOMETHING, and you’re right, it could lend some context explanation to the CF scene if he was in the know…but I just dunno.

Know the saying “no body, no death”, I’m adopting the mantra, “no exit interview, no death.” If this thing was legit, you’d think he’d have done an interview with one of the big TV sites and they would have published it right after the ep aired. As infuriating as the silence is, the longer it goes on, the more it makes me suspect shenanigans. You don’t kill off a main character on your TV show and not attempt to get media mileage out of it, that’s just ridiculous. If an interview DOES come out, then I’ll change my tune, but as of right now, I’m not buying it.

    *HUGS THREAD*

Someone else said it here I think and I agree– I hate mourning fictional characters because I feel like an idiot— but this was so much more than a character. It was a moral, it was a foundation of hope and truth. It was that little beacon of light in the dark that told you everything would be okay in the end.

That’s an excellent way to describe it. It’s not just about one character, it’s more far reaching than that, and it’s got people disillusioned about the entire show and the message it’s supposed to be sending, which is a message that many people connect and cling to on a personal level, not just a fan level. And, like, did the whole fandom just interpret the message of the show wrong? I find that hard to believe. This car crash of a situation they’ve written themselves into is so spectacular, which is what keeps that voice in my head saying that everything surely CAN’T be what it seems on the surface. A&E may make slip ups now and then, but surely they’re not completely incompetent?

BTW-I’m with you guys on the half wanting to have hope and half hoping they don’t bring him back because of how craptastic that would be writing wise.

I posted in another thread, dunno if I mentioned it here, but I do think there’s a way they could write themselves out of this and bring him back without it feeling completely illogical. Because if Rumple was never actually dead in the first place, then it doesn’t really make sense that Neal would die when they switch places. If Rumple was just stuck in the Vault, but not dead, then logically, Neal is just stuck in the Vault, but not dead. The disappearing vs not disappearing bodies of Rumple and Neal is where this line of thinking falls apart, but seriously, if Rumple wasn’t dead, and was able to be sucked out of the Vault, then by rights, the same should apply to Neal.

Problem is, even if they DID go that route, the destruction to the fandom that has resulted from them dropping this bomb of Neal “dying” is such that people may well not be interested in seeing their explanation.

Remember, this duo is represented by Phoenix, mythical firebird that rises from the ashes.

YUP! Extinguishing a Phoenix doesn’t happen this easily.

To me all this is pretty selfish and a Regina and Rumplestiltskin like mistake. Neal rushing to put that key in after knowing it was a trap by Zelena was not an act of heroism, it was an act of stupidity and he paid for it. To me making him flawed at the end, makes Neal’s death more interesting.

Neal already had flaws, but the way they had him instantly going for the dark magic wasn’t a newly revealed flaw so much as it was a completely OOC move which just didn’t make sense. He’s NOT selfish as a general rule, the guy has made a habit out of sacrificing himself for the good/safety of others, so him just using dark magic with no thought for the consequences was ridiculous. It was also ridiculous how they tried to make it like it was only in the moment when he “died” that he had a revelation about selfless sacrifice, because like I said, he’s done just that multiple times before.

I also disliked how that turn of events made Belle OOC as well, because she would have read up on the price of that magic and not just gone running off to do the dark magic totally blind. They made both characters act OOC for plot reasons, and it bugged me. Both characters also had some great moments in this ep, but that was a big, glaring, “what were the writers smoking and do they really expect me to buy it” moment for me with them both.

That’s an excellent point, PoM. And we do know that we’re gonna see Philora again in a couple of eps, so perhaps this is the storyline they’re bringing them back for?

(ETA: Incidentally one of her points is that she didn’t kiss him – we didn’t get a TLK. It does seem like a rather glaring omission, but was it left out for plot/return reasons or “We don’t want to ‘seal the deal’ on them being TL so we’ll just cop out by having Belle say it.”?)

It DOES seem like a glaring omission, especially considering they have basically confirmed via Belle that SF = TL. Belle’s line could have been a setup because they have a TLK in store in future and they didn’t want it to come completely out of the blue. Perhaps?

BTW sorry for serial posting in here. I need to talk it out and had to let poor roomie go to bed. Also, I am terrifically sorry for all over my cheerleader posts over the past few days. Guess I let my belief in hope, love and a well-written story cloud my vision of how badly a fan base could be messed over by TPTB…

No need to apologise for either thing! I said before this ep that I didn’t see how it would make sense for them to kill Neal, so I really didn’t think it would happen, and I stand by that statement that it makes no sense, actually, it makes even less sense than I’d anticipated.

it is a heavy sacrifice. I bet this is why he was so afraid of it, unlike a regular person, he would not just die and rest in peace, he would suffer for all eternity locked up in that dark vault…
this is why I can not believe that Neal is really dead…

They’ve left the specifics delightfully vague. Was Rumple really ever dead in any way, shape or form? Because if not, then the “life for a life” thing wasn’t technically one person being brought back to life and another one dying, it was one person being dragged out of the DO Vault, and another person having to take their place in there? And if Rumple wasn’t actually “dead” when he was in there, then logically, Neal’s not really “dead” either, he’s just trapped in the Vault? But we got no indication of Rumple’s body having been outside the Vault, but Neal’s very definitely lying on the forest floor. Then again, Rumple was the Dark One and Neal was just a mortal, so maybe the same body vanishing rules don’t apply for both? Magic + logic = headache.

Just posted Lumiere’s quote in another thread, but when I saw my post with the text right above my sig banner, it made me cock my head at the wording…

“Where the first Dark One was made, born out of the, well, darkness.”
“Because, it was born out of true love”

    Curious wording, no?
