ParticipantI have always thought Hook as the byronic hero. Now that said are there any byronic heroes (think Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights) that did not have an unhappy ending. If not then are there other character archetypes that have the same beginning–or similar in that there is a lost love, or something tragic that happens but less tragic endings? I found a rather good list here and it be interesting to explore which archetype Hook might fit.

People’s views of Onciverse Hook can be quite polarising. You either think he’s completely shallow, or incredibly deep. I’m the latter, but can see how others could take him at face value and be turned off. It’s not really that different of a situation to Rumple. People either think he’s the ultimate evil, or the ultimate candidate for redemption.
For me what is really getting to me is that I have no problem with posters like yourself because you come across as extremely level-headed and approach characters, and situations within the show that are incredibly thought-provoking and deep. It’s just that there a handful of posters that have been making it difficult to be overly excited for Hook (still doesn’t ruin my love of a pirate). However I do try to look at the character from the perspective of the plot and what facts we are given and try not to let it get to me. (Honestly I have been trying to be as tactful as possible and I know that part of understanding the dynamics is willing to understand the different perspectives that causes people to reach different conclusions–though not well at times I admit).
Oh and that ends the compliments for the night xD

I’d actually love for Colin to leave the show – Hook isn’t developing. And to top it all off, so much (Not all!) of his fan base cut and paste the entire show to center around him….:
You know it’s comments like that, which really get the pot stirred on the board, right? There’s been a lot of complaint about hatred and trolling toward Captain Swan shippers (not that there hasn’t been trolling elsewhere, but trolling in general is what is getting really old).
I am really trying to understand where you are coming from with your particular perspective… :/ What sort of opposing opinion merits being called hatred or trolling? The thread title can be seen as trolling because it is directed the people themselves… but can you explain it to me so that I can hopefully understand…

ParticipantI honestly hope it is that Cora does not know rather than her using a spell to speed up the process. I don’t know it would be nice to see her not being able to do something rather than being like “I use this awesome magic now.” There are times where I feel as if they are over-empowering her slightly in the sense in that she might have learned magic from different realms but it would take years to be a master of any given craft. She might lift the spells from a book but it takes practice and dedication… Because then if she knows how then why didn’t she simply use her magic to wreak havoc and have it done and over with? Unless she is powering up and gathering items for a rather large curse/spell….
I like the idea of Mendell being connected to the beanstalk and maybe becoming a villain because of it.

ParticipantI think Emma and Hook might blow off some steam (especially if Emma is pent up with emotions because of NealFire) but he really needs to stop flirting with Snow (also in Tiny when he tells Snow that he now knows where Emma got her gumption then sticks out his tongue slightly to one corner–maybe bites it slightly… It’s like Hook, dude… you don’t actually hint to what you want to do to Emma in front of her parents… can you imagine what the inevitable family dinner will be like if it progresses: Emma: You hit on my mom? You insinuated what you wanted to do with me? Henry then chiming in with questions…
Though I look forward for the inevitable triangle between Neal, Emma and Hook and then possibly another triangle between Belle, Rumple and Hook… 😆

ParticipantAlso need to add Hook’s flirting with Snow. I understand he is a pirate but having him say that to Emma’s mom is a bit… I don’t know it make me go “gahhhuggghhh” (and is that going to be a point of contention between Emma and him? Because I can imagine her clamming up if she learns that he was hitting on Snow because it’s her mom). When he comments about where Emma got her gumption and he sticks his tongue out slightly to one corner.. and I am like… “Really?! Hook, dude, you don’t actually show/hint what you want to do with Emma (you know all naughty like) to her parents” that is just… yeah… awkward. 😆

We have the story of amnesiac Belle, nearly forgotten as well kinda amnesiac Sneezy, the story of Greg the stranger, of Cora on a power conquering trip, Regina’s fight for Henry, Hook’s revenge, Rumple’s search for his son, Emma finding her new identity + figuring out (her) magic + getting used to have parents + being a parent herself besides being the one to save Storybrooke, the world and everybody. We have Snow and David having to deal with for a change not being separated for a while. There is the fight between the “evil” team and the “good” team lurking (good and evil can be so ambiguous, especially in this show). There was the Story of Dr. Whale (but guess won’t hear much about him anymore for the rest of the season), Ruby and her grandma are still involved (but somehow now doubt, we get to hear more about them this season). Without closure the stories of Phillip, Mulan and Aurora. Oh, and then there is the still unanswered question of what happened to August. And what about the fairies? And now we have Anton and the possibility of growing magic beans in Storybrooke, which eventually Cora will try to steal. Not to forget what spoilers are telling us or we are hoping for, the whole happy family reunion, or not so happy one, Snow White's mother, young Cora.
Feeling like sitting in an overspeeding carousel. 🙄
When you see it typed out I completely agree. I think what is getting me is that we all of these stories but we are basically going to miss what would be the journey of some characters. Like Aurora and Mulan I think they could have made an interesting storyline but since they are no longer attached to Emma then we might not get to see them until there is a connection again.
But I do agree that there is so much there and it definitely feels a bit overwhelming at times. I guess that those who are “secondary” only have their stories told when it involves the main characters somehow (i.e. Ruby when she crossed paths with Snow, then Snow and David etc).
I don’t know how feasible it would be but it would be sort of nice to have some off show things–not sure what exactly maybe a journal of Mulan cataloging the journey. Something like this to sort of expand the world even more…
Just something…

I have never been a fan of the insult coward.
I take your point. I used the word coward because it was used to describe Rumple in his pre-Dark one days, and he described himself as a coward. I was thinking about his reaction to Belle’s predicament, and obviously did not analyze his actions the way you did.
Your comment, as well as some made by others, reminds me of the speech by the Wizard at the end of Oz. I’m really hoping that Mr. Gold, along with Neal (Bae?) and Emma will end up in Oz – where Mr. Gold will assume the role of the lion, and learn the same lesson the lion did.
Oh yes completely understood I only meant on how it was used on the show (especially since it seemed he lived in a feudalistic society–though certain areas could have been going through a renaissance era already—so it seems that FTL was running parallel for the most part to societal and political climate of our own world—or other worlds influenced slightly from our own—and that was quite the tangent).
I do like the idea of Oz. I wonder which roles would the others fill? Henry could be Toto. Although I would like Henry as Dorothy to help the adults move along in their journey. Plus even if he was a part of the adventure (of breaking the curse) it was mostly having Emma believe so that she could have her own adventure. Since adventure runs in the family it would make sense to have him be Dorothy. So Rumple is the cowardly lion (love that). Now for the Tin Man to find his heart and the Scarecrow to find his brain… (although in the story it seemed that Dorothy made it known they needed both).
I see Emma as the Tin Man. I think she still has to come to terms to her heart, her desires, her feelings, vulnerabilities. Bae needs to keep his brain (his wits) about him when dealing with a long last dad, and the situation at hand. Although I do think ultimately Rumple, Emma and Bae are going to have Henry stress the importance the strength of one’s character (courage), heart and brain all together and needed.
I wonder if they are going to have them visit Oz or have it allegorical. Henry might wonder why and we might see Dr. Oz tell him that it is not the place that is important but the journey itself that Oz might be needed for some and not for others O: or something like that… maybe even have Oz promise to let Henry visit xD (Although I just had the thought of Cora with a house on top of her xD)

ParticipantFavorite:
* The community of Storybrooke when it came to Anton. I loved that they forgave him, worked together to save him, and that he found a family.
* I loved Robert’s emotional range during this episode and his dealing with the real world with planes, security, not being able to actually use his cane to beat someone up, and lack of magic. I think we are definitely going to see his withdrawal from magic and that might come to a head with Bae. Bae might see it as Rumple not being over the use of magic and uses it as a crutch (dependent on it).
Least
* Snow’s comment was unnecessary. (I wonder if she is antagonizing Regina to have her adventure but this is much different then with Hook. Since if Regina and Cora team up that would put them in a very sticky widget).
* I do want to see less crying Regina. Part of me shakes my head because I feel like she’s bringing some of it unto her own now that she knows she is going be criticized more harshly. Also I would think that she would be happy that Henry was out of town. That means he is out of harm’s way. So that is another thing I dislike. She always seemed smart and clever in her own right…
* The fact that they are sedating Belle. I do not trust this at all especially when it is the nurse that watched over the cells for all those years–that is what really concerning me. This is not conducive for recovery at all. That not only makes Belle feel as if she is crazy but what is going to happen when she does finally remember who she is? She is going to realize that Ruby lied to her. That is almost like a betrayal to Belle.
* Not really least per say but oh god I could not keep my laughter in when I saw James like sitting there with his shirt opened down to basically his navel like that… He looked like such a tool. I feel like he was the guy everyone hated but pretended to love because he had money and was the prince. 😛
*I also have to comment that I completely agree regarding ABC. I have never really came across a television channel that essentially leaked its own show before it aired. I remember David Anders being really annoyed that ABC basically told us that he was Frankenstein. I know this is on ABC and not the creators. The thing is though I feel like the creators are in a tough spot because they might throw out clues to confuse us (they did that with the casting list I believe) but they can’t do that kind of move in an official promo because I am sure ABC would deny it on the basis of liability.
I wonder then how can they have their promos but keep the mystery as well? Such as throwing an extended part of a scene that is random or an actual fake out (such as a promo that alludes to jack being another person etc). Though the problem then comes when audiences (well some) realize that it is not in the actual show might feel disappointed, annoyed etc…
I guess I believe they should have less promos. One or two is definitely enough especially with the pictures that do come out. That way we get our mystery and just enough to get our curiosity going.
I wanted to add that I haven’t really been keeping up with spoilers and promos–only here and there (didn’t have the time or have it now xD) and I still got the gist of the the upcoming episode from the end of the show promo. That seems kind of crazy and ridiculous. Especially for the end of the episode promo. I can understand the other promos since from it seems usually people have to actively search for them (by visiting sites that publish them not necessarily commercials)…

ParticipantThe first thing that came to mind was Pudd’nhead Wilson where it basically looks into how nurture can affect nature (one’s birth). James and David were both born in the same humble circumstances as a farmer’s son. James was raised as a prince who seemed to have little parental instruction or discipline which could be due to his using his title to threaten those who might have wanted to discipline him. George never seemed to be that preoccupied about his son and only cared when he needed his son for a reason (slaying a dragon, marrying the princess for gold etc). Then there is the fact that we don’t know for how long James did not have a mother or even a mother-figure. Whereas David might have grown up in much different circumstances but his mother clearly taught him the importance of humility, hard work, honesty etc.
So I don’t think it is about the circumstance of the birth or lifestyle but how much involvement each had from their parent.
