I have always thought Hook as the byronic hero. Now that said are there any byronic heroes (think Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights) that did not have an unhappy ending. If not then are there other character archetypes that have the same beginning–or similar in that there is a lost love, or something tragic that happens but less tragic endings? I found a rather good list here and it be interesting to explore which archetype Hook might fit.

In the scene where Emma and Rumple are looking for Bealfire/Neal, and Emma speaks into the speaker, Neal recognises her voice so he runs. He doesn't know that Rumple is with Emma, so therefore he is still running away from her. However in contrast to Hook – Hook stays and fights for what he wants 'A man unwilling to fight for what he wants, deserves what he gets'. I truly believe that this famous quote will come up again, and this time will be directed at Neal/Bealfire.
Also, while I'm on this topic, Neal got a postcard at the start of the season and he still hasn't gone to find Emma.
So in my eyes, I can already tell who is more suited to Emma – Captain Hook. I find them both so alike and so perfect for each other. As for Neal I believe that he will find someone else who he will be willing to fight for, because right now his not even lifting a finger for Emma.

You might need to spoiler block your post Jolly Roger as this is in general 🙂
You’ve posted almost the same thing as I posted on the previous page- I’d only seen the 1st promo though (it’s all under the spoiler block).
But I couldn’t agree more with you! Esp having seen the sneak peek you refer to 🙂February 14, 2013 at 9:05 am #173216surayyaParticipant@playarita wrote:

Hehe, the definition of a byronic hero (aside from the young bit) fits Rumple as well 😆 😉
I guess I can see how Hook could fit the definition, but we have yet to find out if he’s distressed by a terrible wrong he himself committed in the past, or if if that was in fact just Rumple killing his wife which put him over the edge.
I’m sure something happened in his past which meant he had to ‘grow up’ fast & fend for himself vigorously to have become a pirate captain in the 1st place (kind of makes me want to watch stardust again- De Niro gives Pirates everywhere hope of redemption lol 😉 😆 )- I just hope we get to see that story- even if Peter isn’t in it (or he turns out to be Peter 😕 )!February 14, 2013 at 9:33 am #173219the jolly rogerParticipant@Surayya wrote:
