but I don’t like the fact that it’s Merida that’s getting one.

Just to clear this up, I’m not 100% certain it’s Merida but the way she is presented makes me think it’s Merida. (but I agree with your criticism of it being her…if it is)

So I have a question, is there a time jump before going to Camelot? Or just the 6 weeks spent in Camelot?

6 weeks in Camelot. No time jump before Camelot. 90% of this episode is present day.

Alright y’all. I’ve seen the premiere and I get to give a few teases. (ONCEpodcast has access to screeners. Matt got 401 last year, if you recall).

I won’t say too much because everyone should enjoy it on Sunday, but here are some highs, lows, thoughts, and reactions.

Out of a possible 10, I’m giving it a very solid 8. I agree with @Kranen that it’s one of their better premieres. Sort of along the lines of “New York City Serenade” though this one ranks lower for me by a few hairs. It’s not as confusing as I thought it would be, though we very clearly jump to several different times in history (1989, Camelot of some indeterminate past, present day, and the future–6 weeks, to be precise). It’s actually pretty easy to follow because the jumps happen at the beginning and end.

    A few narrative points

–You’ll learn something about the Dark One’s dagger within the first five minutes. I kinda loved the reveal, if I’m being honest. It makes all the sense and it sets up (possibly) how the Darkness needs to be erased?

–Cute (and very obvious) reference to Disney’s “The Sword and the Stone” that also sets up where I think they’re going with Emma this season. But Merlin….totes mysterious, y’all.

–Darkness!Rumple and Emma were very funny together. It’s another side of Bobby as Rumple that was delightful. As if we took Dark One! Rumple and removed all the humanity he had and added more snark.

–Merida’s storyline is explained (and I’m going to reaffirm that she’s the one getting an LGBT storyline this season)

–Ship stuff galore, for CS and OQ with a small bit of Rumbelle. If you’re a fan of those then you’ll love the very ship-y moments. Also, there definitely some obvious SQ bait.

–Zelena is literally crazy. I mean, we knew that but….I think she got crazier?

–A few squabbles amongst those left behind, but quickly resolved.

–Decent enough CGI for Camelot, though you don’t see a lot of it.

–FRUSTRATING ENDING. Like, super frustrating. This type of storytelling is becoming a problem on OUAT because this trope is being used to the hilt on this show and it’s getting old and it’s getting old FAST. I probably would have given the premiere a higher rating if not for this ending simply because it has been done *to death* by OUAT.

–However, JMo does a nice job as Dark! Swan in the brief moment we see her.

    Funny bits

–“…your turn.” I laughed so flipping hard for so long.

–“I like her spunk! Break her neck!”

    –“Do you enjoy knitting?”

That’s not really a spoiler, though. We saw Lily teach Emma some things in S4.

And Jerome…..the dude playing him….Wow! Just wow! He’s very in tune with his character! Anyone get the feeling that Barbra will likely end up becoming Harley Quinn???

A couple of us had this conversation this morning and @Phee made a really good point that while Barbara probably won’t be Harley herself, she’ll be the reason why Jerome creates Harley at some point in the future.

I’m going to predict either a 2.0 or a 2.1 for “The Dark Swan.” Each premiere has at least gotten a 0.3 boost from their respective finales. Season 4’s finale got a 1.8. This tends to happen even with the Spring premieres, too.

I am also predicting a 2.1 for the opener on Sunday.

    Play along, everyone!

Hogwarts would so fail and Ofsted inspection what with the amount of student endangering that happens. The school would be closed down.

lol in our non fictional world, yes. But I wonder if parents just expect a certain level of danger when their children get shipped off to Hogwarts. I mean, they all went through it (if they are magical, at least) and don’t seem to think it any great thing to send their children there. Most are proud to say that their kids are following in their footsteps. I suspect that most parents know that magic is dangerous but that their children need to learn it somehow.

of course that’s all going to change in a few books when parents do start pulling kids out of school following the Triwizard Tournament

I told myself I would give Gotham one more chance to prove to me that it was worth keeping in my TV roster so I watched the premiere of S2.

It was 99.9% better than everything that happened in S1. A sort of campy, fun, less-tedious-case-of-the-week format really improved the show overall. When the best of the episode is Barbara, then you know they’ve done a 180.

Overall, it was fun and managed to feel like Gotham is trying to be its own entity, not something that has to stick to a canon. It found a better place to reside, using canon to help it along, but not feeling like it had to be a slave to it.

    Best bits:

    –Barbara and Jerome

    –Penguin being a boss

–Riddler! I love him; I think he’s my favorite.

–Donal Logue just being there is good enough for me for the moment

    –The new villains

    Less than stellar bits

–Why is Selena working for Penguin?

–The ending is rather horrible cliche in terms of writing, but more or less expected since Baby! Batman is in fact…Batman

–Leigh. I find her boring. Not as much as I found Barbara boring, but she’s pretty bland on her own.
