ParticipantI posted this same theory under the Ruby/Red Riding Hood Character Analysis post: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=291
It’s rather odd that David’s memory lapses in SB seem to parallel Red’s in FTL. Does that mean David could also be a werewolf in SB, but doesn’t know it (the way Red didn’t know about being a werewolf in FTL)? Another wild theory of mine is that David could be Graham’s wolf guide, the one with the multicolored eyes: one red as blood and the other dark as night (a reference to Snow White). After all, David only has eyes for Snow White (lame joke). I doubt it, but it’s worth surmising over.
I’m not sure how likely it is that David is a werewolf, but the thought did occur to me. It seems like the writers were highlighting David’s memory lapses in a way that parallels the ones Red faced. David could be a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” so to speak. He’s an expert at tracking/finding people, since he’s always able to find Snow White in FTL. Back in SB, Ruby was easily able to track down David in the woods. Maybe David’s father in FTL was a werewolf? Again, that is probably very far fetched.

I’ve been thinking about what David was looking for. Dr. Whale suggested that David was just returning to his comatose state (if we are to trust a man that got his medical degree from a curse). Thus his non-cursed state? In his non-cursed state what was he looking for? Initially I thought it would be Snow since he was near the Troll Bridge (according to Emma). But he ran in to MM/Snow and was still in his state of mind. Was he maybe looking for baby Emma?
My reply there was:
Perhaps David was looking for his true identity. He seemed to be in a limbo state, like between a hazy dream (SB) and reality (FTL). I think that when Mary Margaret read to David, it caused him to wake up from his comma. Then, he was in a comatose like state, and though functional, made his way to the troll bridge, because he was searching for something familiar. Yet, it wasn’t until Mary Margaret found him and gave his a kiss of life that he awoke again. Could he have slipped back into a comatose-like state after Mary Margaret rejected him?
I’ll add here that I thought it was very interesting how David’s moments of amnesia in SB seem to parallel the blackouts Red had in FTL when she was in her wolf form. I think the writers are highlighting this for a reason.

Participant@ mia: You wrote, “August could be the Regina’s love that was lost!!” I will add that Regina said to Emma that he seemed familiar when he first arrived in town. Coincidence?
Here is some information regarding August from an interview with Eddy Kitsis:
Heck, they won’t even say if he’s genuinely crushing on Emma. “He seems to be operating on an agenda,” notes EP Eddy Kitsis, “so the interesting thing is to ask is whether those feelings are real or not.” Kitsis will confirm this much, though – August did in fact add pages to Henry’s storybook, “for a very, very specific reason.” (And I myself will offer this one piece of intel regarding August’s trustworthiness: In the diner scene of this Sunday’s episode, pay close attention to the lemurs.)
Also, we know August is a writer. We saw him adding pages to Henry’s book. Also, August told Emma he was in town with his typewriter to get inspiration. Could he be getting back at Regina for something? His reference to lemurs, which were said to be vengeful spirits, is a huge clue.

ParticipantI still have some reasons to root for David. Most importantly, I’m rooting for him to find Mary Margaret and make it work. He is a complex character. He seems to be the very opposite of Prince Charming in many ways because he is cursed. He is very conflicted, perhaps because he has conflicting memories between SB and FTL. Though he doesn’t want to hurt anyone, that’s all he ends up doing in SB. He has a hard time doing the right thing, because it’s very hard for him to figure out what the right thing to do is, as a result of the curse. On the one hand, he loves Mary Margaret, who really is his wife in FTL, which is the reason for his inexplicable attraction to her. On the other hand, he feels a sense of duty to Kathryn, who isn’t really his wife but is his fabricated wife in SB. He finally decides that the “right thing” is not to lead Kathryn on anymore and to let her find true love like she deserves. Kathryn seemed to come to terms with this in ep. 13 (before she disappeared). That’s why he’s going to end up in the care of Dr. Archie Hopper, a conscience, who’ll hopefully help David see what the right thing is. After ep. 15, I’m wondering what happened to make David have a “black-out” like he did when he awoke from his comma. The memory loss seemed to parallel the similar bouts of amnesia episodes Red had in FTL when in her wolf form. Also, I’m curious how Dr. Whale is involved, if at all, in David’s memory difficulties. I’m not sure whether Dr. Whale is a hero or villain now, since he isn’t a big bad wolf after all.

Participant@ hjbau: You’re probably right. On another post about Granny, mia mentioned that it could have been an allusion to Liza Minnelli (who wore lots of makeup). Granny said, “For another thing, Eliza, you dress like a drag queen during fleet week.” Perhaps lots of drag queens dress as Liza Minnelli? No idea.

Participant@ mia: I heard Granny say “e-LIZA” with a soft “e” sound and an emphasis on the “Liza” part when she wants to teach Ruby bookkeeping in the diner. I could be wrong. Perhaps it’s just a reference to Liza Minnelli (who wore a lot of makeup). Both “Liza” and “Eliza” are shortened variants of the name “Elizabeth” from the Hebrew for “God is my oath.” Also, for some reason I thought of Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady (which is probably completely unrelated). She transformed from a common flower girl to a lady.
As for Granny, I have to alter my original opinion and say I think she is called Widow Lucas. Perhaps this is the writers’ nod to George Lucas, the director and producer of Star Wars. The creators of OUAT said Star Wars is one of their favorite fairy tales. However, I still prefer the name Lupas myself (perhaps because it reminds me of Harry Potter book 3 where Professor Lupas was a werewolf).
@ NONNIE: A thought I have regarding Granny’s scar is that since it carried over from FTL, and since it still hurts every full moon, perhaps the werewolf curse is still active in SB, which is why Ruby wears so much red.

ParticipantI find Granny’s FTL name really clever. She is referred to as the Widow Lupus by the villagers. Lupus is Latin for wolf! Given that Granny was marked by a werewolf and transformed into one, as well as married to a werewolf, the name makes sense. It is interesting that her scars carried over from FTL to SB (just as Prince Charming’s chin scar carried over). What wasn’t as clear was how in FTL, Granny had overcome transforming into a werewolf but maintained her keen sense of smell. How did she manage to prevent transforming during wolf’s time? I was intrigued that Granny Lupus hired a wizard to make a magical red cape that prevents Red Riding Hood (whose referred to as Eliza in SB by Granny) from turning during the wolf’s time. I really want to see more of that back story in season 2.

Participant@ darcyfarrow: Ruby’s dashboard unicorn is actually a wolf – which now makes perfect sense given the fact that Red is a werewolf!
Also, what is with August mentioning lemurs in Nepal?

ParticipantI think that is a very interesting theory.
I think Mr. Gold is attempting to expose Regina for framing Mary Margaret for murder. Since Mr. Gold is defending Mary Margaret in a court of law in ep.16, he must have a master plan to publicly reveal the falsity of Regina's “evidence” against Mary Margaret. We know from episode 12 that Rumple has a reason to hate Regina. There is probably a darker and more profound reason we’ve yet to discover.
One might argue that Mr. Gold is the one framing Mary Margaret for murder, but I think that Regina has the strongest reason to ruin Mary Margaret’s life (i.e. Snow White revealed a secret that ruined Regina’s life in FTL). We already know from episode 13 that Regina burned the letter Kathryn left for David. We also know from episode 14 that Regina gave false phone records to Sydney. In ep. 15, Regina appeared very upset that Emma was asking medical questions from Dr. Whale about David’s condition instead of “doing her job.”
I still haven’t worked out how Mr. Gold would expose Regina, but we know from ep. 7 that Graham saw Mr. Gold with a shovel in the middle of the forest “doing a bit of gardening.” We also know from ep. 10 that Rumple gave Snow White the potion to forget her love for Prince James in exchange for some of her hair. If Rumple had Snow White touch the box with the human heart in FTL, maybe he was hoping to catch Regina. Perhaps Mr. Gold wanted to bring Snow White to trial just to publicly defend her and then pin the blame on the real culprit: Regina.

ParticipantMy mind is still reeling from ep. 15! We know from “Red Handed” that Mary Margret’s finger prints were found on a box containing a human heart (the same kind of box in which Regina kept Graham’s heart in ep. 7). Based on preview for ep. 16, we know that Mary Margaret is on trial for the murder of Kathryn. This seems to corroborate with my theory that Regina is framing Mary Margaret in SB very similarly to how she probably framed Snow White in FTL. I'm interested to know how Regina is planting evidence and what will happen in the trail where Mr. Gold is representing Mary Margaret. We still need to find more of the back story between the Huntsman freeing Snow White (ep. 7) and Snow White being wanted for “murder, treason, and treachery” (ep. 3). This new plot development has me on the edge of my seat wanting more details. Great episode!
