Participant@ hjbau: According to wikipedia, Maleficent is an evil fairy godmother. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maleficent Perhaps the evil fairy dust Snow White got in ep. 3 Snow Falls was really from Maleficent. I could see Maleficent giving Snow White the evil fairy dust in order to prevent Regina from enacting the dark curse. Remember the power struggle between Regina and Maleficent in ep. 2 The Thing You Love Most? Maleficent said to Regina:
“Don’t do this, this curse. There are lines even we shouldn’t cross. All power comes with a price. Enacting it will take a terrible toll. It will leave an emptiness inside you — a void you will never be able to fill.”

ParticipantWhile I think it is a very important step for Emma to believe in fairy tales, I don’t think her belief in magic is enough to break a powerful curse. I think her belief will be very instrumental in her learning how to break the curse though. Based on the episode description of ep. 17 Mad Hatter, a mysterious and dangerous man with a knowledge of the curse (i.e. Franklin/Mad Hatter) is going to kidnap Emma and try to persuade her that fairy tales actually exist in SB. I think this kind of shocking situation will cast some real doubt on her skeptical nature.

Participant@ weedith: We saw dust from an evil fairy in ep. 3 Snow Falls, when Snow White saved Prince James/Charming from trolls by turning them into insects. She had originally intended to use the fairy dust as a weapon against the EQ. In ep. 5, That Still Small Voice, we saw the Blue Fairy use her magic wand, which is probably powered by fairy dust (since it is what powers the world). In ep. 14, it does seem like the fairy dust deliberately landed on Dreamy’s unhatched egg (very weird episode). I think fairy dust is very powerful, although it’s still very hazy how exactly it powers the world. It also seems like fairies live in their own world.

ParticipantMagic is one of those things that can have either positive or negative consequences, depending on the intentions of the one who yields it. The wand, according to Rumple in ep. 4, was “pure evil” but I think he said that because he already had a vendetta against fairies. Of course, we do know from ep. 3 that evil fairies exist and that their fairy dust is harmful. I think that there can be either negative or positive consequences to magic depending on the moral makeup of the one who grants a wish. So far, only Rumple says, “all magic comes at a price.” It is in his interest to say so, since he gets to make a deal in his favor. I think in that case of the Blue Fairy, however, she is righting a wrong, so the consequences are favorable, like Jiminy becoming a cricket to help Gepetto.

ParticipantYeah, I bet Rumple knew what was coming, and willingly walked into the trap Cinders tried to set. Perhaps he wanted to be imprisoned in a magical mine to be protected from the EQ’s curse. Perhaps the fairy dust/magic wooden prison bars shielded Rumple from the dark magic, thereby preserving his memories of FTL when he was transported to SB with the rest of the bunch. Also, he probably foresaw Snow White would only come to him for help about the curse once he was safely behind magical bars. That way, he was able to strike a deal with her: knowledge about the curse and how to break it in exchange for her unborn child’s name: Emma. We already know that for Rumple, knowing someone’s name gives him power over that person. Now in SB, Mr. Gold may have that power, plus Emma owes him a favor in exchange for allowing Ashley to keep her baby.

ParticipantRemember how Snow White used dust from a bad fairy to turn trolls to bugs in order to save Prince Charming? She was saving it to transform the EQ and squash her like a bug. I suppose fairy dust can be either good or evil, depending on either the source or the one using it.
In the case of the “pure evil” remark, perhaps Rumple thinks the consequences of magic are often worse than the desired result.

Participant@ hjbau: Agreed. I don’t think Mr. Gold remembered FTL as a result of any sign in SB. It appears he always knew the truth and was just playing dumb to fool Regina (up until she used the chipped cup to force him to say his FTL name). He is a very cunning character, and he obviously knew in advance that he’d be immune to the dark curse.

Participant@ mia: On the topic of “magic” well water, I agree. You could see the wheels turning in Emma’s head when she somewhat rhetorically asked what other explanation there could be. She clearly left out the drink and conversation she’d had with August. Probably, due to her skeptical side, she doesn’t want Henry jumping to conclusions, even though her disbelief may be starting to wain a bit. I think August fed her the water line to start Emma down the road of believing in even the possibility of magic.
On the topic of town emblems, apple trees, and bee hives (which is almost deserving of an entirely new topic thread), in episode 5, That Still Small Voice, Regina makes an allusion to honeycomb.
Regina: People of Storybrooke, don’t be alarmed. We’ve always known that this area was honeycombed with old mining tunnels. But, fear not, I’m going to undertake a project to make this area safe, to rehabilitate it into city use. We will bulldoze it, collapse it, pave it.
It may simply be an insignificant reference. Yet, it’s still very interesting that she uses the word “honeycombed” in reference to the mines, which run beneath SB. The mines also contain the remains of Snow White’s glass coffin. Perhaps they represent a link between worlds?

ParticipantGood question. Her dark knights seem pretty evil and heartless. Perhaps even cursed? Maybe the EQ owns their hearts, too? I’m wondering why the Evil Queen didn’t just have one of her own guards kill Snow White instead of sending the huntsman.
