Oh wow, on the one hand I love the idea of the portal aging. On the other… it would be so cruel for Snow and David to lose all that time with another child. Is destiny that cruel? Or would mom and dad go along for the ride? I’m coming up empty handed on a name, though!

thelonebamfParticipantPerhaps the witches are something like liches?
“In some works of fiction, liches can be distinguished from other undead by their phylactery, an item of the Lich’s choosing into which they imbue their soul, giving them immortality until the phylactery is destroyed.”
(Stolen from wiki)
So yes, very much like the way a horcrux works.
I can’t say for sure that we’re going to see Zelena again soon/this season. Her… life force may just have returned to Oz so she could rebuild herself. Or perhaps we will. Maybe we’ll see Regina make good on her threat to destroy Zelena if she wasted her second chance.

thelonebamfParticipantSince this show is all about cycles and the mirroring of events, I can see a second kiss doing the job. A real kiss between Hook and Emma this time, given willingly?
Alternately, and perhaps a bit more likely- maybe Emma’s magic isn’t gone because of the curse. The curse’s effect wore off like all of Zelena’s other magic, but as we can see from the end of episode 20, Emma still has it in her mind to return to New York and leave all of this behind her. Magic has no place in the life she envisions for herself and Henry, so she herself it (subconsciously) refusing to let her magic resurface. After all, with Zelena out of the way, she sees no immediate danger and no need for magic at all. She herself said she wouldn’t need it. Should Emma decide to stay and accept her role in her family and her future, her magic may very well return on its own.

Liked:
I really appreciate the direction they are taking Regina’s character. I think it’s very easy for characters to be stagnant, and exploring the new territory of goodness and redemption means we can make way for bigger baddies. I know we have true love to thank for this, and I don’t think it will be a perfectly straight path for the character, but I look forward to where it goes.
I loved the moment where Rumple gives Belle the dagger as a gesture of trust. This was sweet and meaningful, and while I groaned in agony when he showed up in Zelena’s cell, I can’t say it was out of character. If I was writing the big wedding episode, I’d say that Gold would go out of his way for a big lavish show, but Zelena would show up or it would somehow be made known that Gold had killed her and broken the bond of trust he had literally just formed with Belle- and Belle would have to leave him at the altar, because there’s no way you can have a marriage without trust. (She’d still love him, but I can see her refusing to marry him until that trust was rebuilt. Get yourself together, Rumple!)
Mixed feelings
So yeah, I guess I have mixed feelings on the dagger issue. On the one hand, it’s not OOC for Rumple, who is the grand daddy of trust issues. On the other, giving Belle a fake dagger while running around with the real one is basically a huge detriment to the way Gold’s view of Belle is portrayed. If he doesn’t think she needs to worry her pretty little head with the actual dagger, and thinks she won’t figure things out it really makes it seem like he thinks less of her. Ouch. Interesting for character development and drama, but a real shot in the arm for the shippers- myself included.
Didn’t Like
This isn’t new, but wow- can they please cut Hook a little slack? I’m glad that David remembered that Hook is a decent guy and stood up for him, I’ve been waiting for that for quite a while now. They got to know each other pretty well in Neverland so it drove me nuts when the entire Charming family was vilifying Hook for omitting facts out of a desire to keep them all safe. I know that Hook came on a bit strong to Emma in the beginning, but he’s never done anything but tried to be helpful while keeping his personal feelings on the back burner. Yeesh!

I think the show has no problem playing loose with whether or not characters are human, even if their Disney counterparts were animals. In some cases there is a background story for this (like with Jiminy) and at other times, just because it makes logical sense (Robin Hood). So I’d like to see some good old Shakespearean storytelling and let’s break out the script from Hamlet as we play with the cast of the Lion King. What do we get in this fine package? A change of scenery, a new cast of characters, a new kingdom with an established line of rulers- and best of all, some comic relief in the form of Timon and Pumba. XD Could they be the new queer couple? Why not! It would be a nice change of pace (and a good show on Disney’s part) if a gay couple wasn’t steeped in melodrama, and was just a pair of characters who played well off of each other and had a healthy relationship.

thelonebamfParticipantI’ve only just caught up on the last several weeks of episodes and I fear I’ll never catch up to all the discussion, but I thought I’d post a little food for thought. Please forgive me if people have already talked about this for ages!
It occurred to me that Zelena’s entire character profile is centered around one emotion- envy. Her entire motivation, the entire reason behind her machinations is grounded in jealousy, the belief that she was robbed of something she deserved. In many ways, she shares this with Cora who believed that it was not a sibling, but the world that caused her to lack that which she felt she deserved.
This is contrasted by Regina, who (until very recently) was motivated wholly by pride. She was raised by Cora who insisted that her daughter was meant to be great, meant to be Queen. In all of Regina’s upbringing she was led to believe that she was the most exceptional person that existed, and that the entire world was there for the taking if she was bold enough to take it. Her character in FTL looked down on everyone else, finding them beneath her.
The art direction of the show has gone out of its way to pit the two against one another visually (lots of red versus green, a slight color shift from Regina’s usual black and purple) but it’s interesting for me to see the way these two characters contrast each other emotionally. While I have no doubts that Regina will indeed triumph over her sister in the end, it will be because she is able to get over her pride, and accept the help of others around her.
Of course, this now has me wondering what other deadly sins the other cast members might embody. π

thelonebamfParticipantThe Alice in Wonderland one was SO INTENSE. In person, those pinks were so vivid- I didn’t think I could pull it off anywhere in my apartment, haha. I did really love the way the artist used blacks. I did snag the show’s postcard that featured the Alice in Wonderland picture, so I have a mini version.

thelonebamfParticipantSuper thanks, guys. I’m heading to a convention next weekend and these are part of my wares for my table. Princessy styles are super in this year- just my luck! π It’s always fun to make stuff when you think, “Well, if nobody else wants this- I’m sure as heck going to wear it!”
"Nothing is easier than to denounce the evildoer; nothing is more difficult than to understand him."
thelonebamfParticipantEh, to be honest- skills like spinning, weaving, tailoring are all traditionally not big money makers. They fall into the very unfortunate category of Β being very time consuming and labor intensive, while still bringing in very little money. (I suspect this is because traditionally, it would be expected that most homemakers would be able to do rudimentary sewing tasks, so you wouldn’t spend money to get someone else to do your tailoring unless you really had to or were very wealthy.) Someone with more historical knowledge than myself should feel free to correct me.
It is true that the spinners Rumple was raised by noticed a great talent within him, and said “he could spin for kings” (haha, I just now realized how clever that line is – in regards to Cora), which would have made him- if not wealthy, then comfortable, at least. However, I think that would have required dedication on his part, if not for actually training to spin, then at least time spent seeking out connections that would allow him to work for the wealthy. Based on the flashback episode of Rumple and Mila’s married life- I think we can assume that he didn’t do this. This is all just sort of… retro-speculation, as I’m sure the set dressers etc at the time weren’t thinking about Peter Pan/the Spinners/etc etc when that episode was shot (even if whispers of this revelation were on the breeze) but looking back at that episode, we see Rumple and Mila living a comfortable life. They have their own home, and it’s cozy. They’re looking toward a bright future. Then Rumplestiltskin comes in with his summons for the war.
He’s ecstatic! Not because of any monetary gains, but because it will give him a chance to distance himself from the reputation of his father, and everything that came with it. At that point, he’s ready to forget the past and throw himself entirely into this new life. That makes me think that he has probably spent some time pursuing this path, and hasn’t been focusing on spinning lately. He doesn’t want to be the boy raised by spinners any more, he wants to be a brave man and a good father and has likely been crafting that self for some time. It’s probably that self (or imagine of a self) that Mila married, perhaps not realizing what it was tied to.
After the war, it was his own reputation that followed him. “He is a coward… just like a father”. There wasn’t anywhere he could move to escape that- and it was at that point in his life that we really see Rumple and Bae in extreme poverty.

thelonebamfParticipantI think the last major fandom I was really a part of was Harry Potter and crack pairings were sometimes some of the most fun to read and RP. “Time traveling Luna Lovegood meets a young Remus Lupin”. SURE WHY NOT. Part of the fun was just imagining how those characters would interact and what they might bring out in one another. I’m not much of a shipper outside of canon (because I’m just not that creative) but it’s fun to think about.
