ParticipantPOM – you have some good points. Neal’s desperation had him going down a dark road for awhile – following in poppa’s footsteps. I just hope Henry can break the cycle of that family line…

ParticipantI don’t think Henry will. He’s a matured a lot since season one. I feel like Henry now, wouldn’t make such black and white choices.

plus he has other male influences where Rumple and Neal didnt.

ParticipantI think Henry won’t be influenced by the Stiltskin side of his family because Neal didn’t really have any influence on Henry’s upbringing. Whereas Rumple was brought up by Malcolm, and Bae was brought up by Rumple, Henry was brought up by Regina. Henry is the perfect nature vs nurture experiment. Will he repeat the mistakes of the Stiltskins before him because it’s in his nature or will he walk a different path because of the way he was nurtured by Regina?
Do I think Henry may start dabbling in magic? Possibly, he has 3 “users” in his family: Emma, Regina and Rumple.
All magic comes with a price!

true true… although he has soooo many family members we may have to move on to the position that it ‘ takes a village to raise a child ‘
I would think that Henry would LOVE to learn magic.

Yeah I agree. I know a lot of people feel that Neal’s decision to bring back Rumple was OOC but I really just don’t see it. I think part of the reason is because it interferes with the hero narrative that some people have written for Neal because a hero wouldn’t make that choice to use dark magic. That is also a major point of disagreement for me though. Overall I really don’t consider Neal as heroic. He has made some heroic decisions (primarily as a child) but he has also made some very selfish decisions, especially recently. I don’t really consider Hook a true hero yet either despite his making some heroic decisions recently. Maybe my definition is a lot tougher than others 😛
Anyway, my interpretation is that Neal considered the price of the dark magic as the risk of Rumple being in Zelena’s control hence the “my father is the king of loopholes” comment. That is a pretty big price overall not just for the innocent people as a whole but also dooms his father to be a slave!
I think this was all very clearly contrasted with Belle’s reaction. Here was her chance to actually get her True Love, back from presumably the dead/limbo(?) and after learning about Zelena’s plot she immediately doesn’t want to do it. She had very valid reasons for wanting to continue with the plan (arguably better than Neal’s) but made the “heroic” decision to sacrifice her happiness for the safety of everyone. In contrast Neal, who was only getting the *possible* chance of getting back to Emma and Henry was willing to risk everything.
I know a lot of people have also been talking of the death of hope/happy endings on this show because Neal didn’t get his but I think an even bigger theme in Once is all magic comes with a price and that happy endings need to be earned. It has been shown multiple times that using dark magic comes with an even bigger price and it does NOT get you your happy ending. I think Neal being OOC is clearly a debatable issue but regardless of whether it was a bad plot device or not he used really dark magic and had to pay the price. That price was his happy ending. As far as I am concerned that is as it should be and doesn’t ruin the show’s theme.
All that being said I am sad that Neal died even though he wasn’t my favorite character. I didn’t think he belonged with Emma but I was hoping for a good relationship to develop between him and Henry especially.

ParticipantI thought about it a while too and I didn’t find it to be OOC for Neal either especially when you juxtapose this with the shadow thing in the EF.
