Side note: in 1984 the band Kansas relased a greatest hit album with a special version of….. Carry on you wayward son.

Seems a fitting song for the guy who is helping Emma believe so she can break the curse.[adrotate group="5"]Phee
ParticipantOther places to look for meaning in his name….
August von Haxthausen was a close friend of the Grimms and collected folk tales: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_von_Haxthausen
Wayne Booth was a literary critic who wrote “The Rhetoric Of Fiction”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Booth
Both of which tie into the idea that he had a hand in writing the book.
PS. His initials: A.W.B…a wooden boy. Of all the arguments out there, surely this is the most conclusive. 😉

ParticipantThe glitch to me would be that as of right now, I don’t believe that people from worlds other than Fairytale were transported to our world, (I think Jefferson made it back to Fairytale somehow before the curse hit, and doubt that anyone else from Wonderland is in Storybrooke).
I suppose August could have traveled through some portal like the hat as we did clearly see the doorway to Oz in there, but why would the Wizard have the emotional connection to Emma and Storybrooke that August has? What motivation would he have had to go there? What would he get out of it if Emma breaks the curse?
Also, I think that they’ve got so much FTL and Storybrooke centric storyline to cram into the last 4 eps, that introducing a whole new world at this point would be a distraction. They’ve got some great momentum going and cutting into that with a divertion to show us a new world and his whole separate life there wouldn’t be the smartest storytelling at this point in time.
There’s no doubt that there are a bunch of little hints that suggest an Oz connection which have been pointed out in this thread, so if they could somehow make it work, I’m sure they could make it believable. I just don’t think they have enough time to do it properly with the time they have left in season 1 though, and I think that when they DO take us to Oz at some point, they’ll want to take the time to do it justice.
Nothing in spoilers suggests that we'll be taking time out to go visit Oz this season. Ep 19: we're going back to see Rumple and Bae in FTL. Ep 20: we're going to see Pinocchio and Geppetto in FTL. Ep 21 we don't have all the details yet, but given the title it's safe to say we're spending that ep in FTL to see how Regina poisoned Snow with the apple. Then we're at the season finale, and they'll have plenty going on there already without being able to focus on introducing a whole new land in that ep.

1. Why did Rumpelstiltskin give Regina the Dark Curse in the First Place
He needed it cast and couldn’t do it himself.
This curse, IMO, IS about love, not hate. I think that this curse was created because he needed an antidote for the Dark One curse. He didn’t believe that a curse as strong as the one inflicted on him could possibly be broken. Then along came Belle, and if he’d have let it happen, their love WOULD have broken the curse.
So he needed love, which it turns out, IS indeed the greatest magic of all, it’s not just lovey dovey words, it’s actually fact, and was the only thing that could save him. Problem was, he couldn’t use his and Belle’s love, because he now believed her to be dead. And he couldn’t use his and Bae’s love, because that was lost centuries ago.
So he needed some other loved up couple to provide the vital ingredient for this spell, which is what he used Snow and Charming for.
Next problem he faced was that love was also needed to ENACT the curse. The sacrifice of love was needed for this. Both of the loves he had had in his life were gone, so he couldn’t enact it himself. There was no one’s heart he could toss into a fire. So he needed someone with the desire for the power this spell would weild. Someone who would sacrifice ANYTHING to have it. Lucky for him, he knew Regina. Power hungry, seethingly vengeful Regina, who would even sacrifice her own father, the only love she had left in the world.
So he got her to take it, he got her to enact it, but he made sure to build in an antidote: Emma, born of that same true love that was the spell’s vital ingredient that made it so powerful. Once Emma breaks the curse, Mr Gold will be free of magic, which had become such a terrible burden on him. And he’ll get the final victory over Regina when all the power she had in Storybrooke comes crashing down around her and she’s left with nothing.
2. How was he protected to remember the previous life? does this mean he is in fact stronger than Regina?
As the maker of the curse, he surely would have included a clause to ensure he got perks, like retaining all his memories. He probably didn’t even really NEED to ask Regina for the perks he wanted like comfort and luxury, he was probably gonna get that anyway. Asking for that stuff was just part of the act, so that she felt like SHE was the one in control of the situation. Poor, misguided Regina. She wasn’t even expecting him to remember their conversation, so what harm would it do to agree to his request? At least it’d get him to stop blabbing away and get on with telling her how to enact the freaking curse.
What did she get out of that pointless (in her eyes) favour? Nothing. What did RUMPLE get out of it? Power over Regina whenever he wanted, as long as he said the magic word: please. He totally manipulated her into giving up some of her future power, because he knew she was too blinded by the big picture to pay attention to the details. He totally snowed her. Always read the fine print before you agree to anything, Regina!!

Rumpel would never give that much power to anyone, especially not Regina. So, I have a feeling Rumpel will reveal that Regina cast the wrong curse in the finale.
I think she cast the right curse, it’s just that she didn’t really know the truth about the curse she was casting. 😉 Rumple led her to believe it was one thing, when really its purpose was different. Like you say, there’s no way he’d give her that much power, so there must be something else to his plan. Her ego let her believe that she’d surpassed him, and he’d conceeded to give her the ultimate power.
Really, it helped his cause to be in jail when she came to see him, because it made her feel even more like she had the upper hand because she was free and he was a prisoner. Maybe that’s why he signed Cinderella’s contract, even though he seemed to know that something was bogus about it. He didn’t seem all that upset when he was entrapped, which I’ve always thought was odd. But if he wanted to appear powerless to Regina right before she cast the curse, so he’d be able to sweet talk her into his final requests, being captured was the perfect position for him to be in.
“Perception is everything, Miss Swan, not just in the courtroom but also in life.” Indeed, Mr Gold, IN-DEED!

ParticipantI wonder how the Aladdin story will play out on the show whenever we see it. Obviously it didn’t end like the Disney version, because Genie was still in the lamp when we met him.

ParticipantThe plant was a plant. LOL I felt so dumb for not immediately guessing that when Sidney walked in so randomly. When Emma picked it up later I was all, “Oh DUH!” We’ll just blame it on the curse making my perception hazy, yes? 😉

ParticipantYou might wanna spoiler tag that bit about the Fairytale we’re getting in Ep 20. 😉
Another thing that originally led people to think he may be from Oz wasn’t just the Kansas plate on his bike, but also the fact that he arrived during a storm.

Just like he orchestrated the events leading Emma to become Sheriff …he orchestrated the Kathryn drama in order to lead Emma through a series of events so she can come to a realization of just what is happening in town and that she should come to him for answers/help.
Mr Gold is THE maestro! Nothing happens by accident in his world. 😉
Regina throwing that little spanner in the works by stealing Chip is probably the first thing to not go according to his plan in a VERY long time. Now he’s got the control back after this whole charade with Kathryn and Mary. May not last for long though, considering Regina still has the Belle card up her sleeve. I LOVE seeing Gold/Rumple manipulate people, but also can’t wait to see him losing control a bit.

I think it was Ep 8 where Regina releases information about Emma’s juvenile record.
Yep, Ep 8 is where the story about Henry being born in jail was in the paper. Emma says that yes it’s true, and she hopes he isn’t scarred for life and he’s all, “I’m not. At least not by this.” 😛
