I was just rewatching “Still Small Voice” and I’m convinced Regina does love Henry; her reactions to Henry’s entrapment–for example, the way she swallows her pride to cooperate with Emma–suggest to me real concern and affection for Henry. I suppose it’s possible she’s putting on a show for her constituents, but the catch in her voice convinces me. If Regina is redeemed at series’ end, I think it will be because of her love for Henry and vice versa.
It’s been a while since I watched that ep, (but now I have an excuse to), but I thought that the bulk of Regina’s panic and concern in that ep stemmed from the fact that she knew what was down there. Her son, who believes all the fairytale stuff, and his therapist, who she doesn’t want believing all the fairytale stuff, were underground somewhere in the same place as there was physical proof of all the fairytale stuff. For all Regina knew, they’d stumbled on Snow White’s coffin and Henry was telling Archie, “You see, I TOLD YOU SO.” No wonder she was on edge.
As to how she decided to adopt Henry, my hunch is that Gold planted the notion in her head. Gradually, over small conversations, bit by bit his suggestions led her to “realize” that she ought to be a mother…all part of his scheme to bring the savior to town.
I like this idea!

I would love to get my hands on Archie’s notes! In reality (so to speak since this is a TV show) I wonder why Henry thinks Regina is evil. Is it only because he has identified her as the EQ and knows what she has done via the book? Is he harder on her because he knows she’s the evil queen so that when she tells him not to leave his shoes on the stairs and when she grounds him for sneaking out of the house he looks at that as evil as opposed to normal things that moms do?
My guess would be yes. Once you believe that someone is an evil, fairytale queen, that would surely taint your view of everything she does.

I almost wonder if the problem is Henry – and if that is the reason he was initially in therapy. Depending on when Henry got the book and realized Regina was the EQ, he could have been pulling away from her for years or months. What if they had a normal relationship and then he suddenly changed when he got the book? We don’t know if Henry knew he was adopted until he got the book – that could affect how he interacts with Regina as well.
We don’t know if he knew he was adopted pre-book, but he surely knew he was different, and that he didn’t fit in, that he wasn’t like the other kids. When you grow up in a town where you’re the only person who ever ages, that’s gotta mess with your head. Wonder what Regina would say to him when he’d ask her why he was different. Maybe she just brushed off the question like he was being silly. And possibly told him not to ask anyone else about it, (because she wouldn’t want anyone else in town questioning it too). Maybe that’s where his animosity towards her stems from?

ParticipantI think she wanted Henry because she saw this reality as her second chance. If this is her happy ending, then she wants to have love in her life again.
Also, it’s some tasty icing on the revenge cake if Regina can have a child when the curse took Snow’s child away from her. Even if Snow doesn’t realise it, it’d still be enough for Regina to feel like she came out on top in that regard.
Sucks for her that the kid she ended up with can see who she really is, so it’s not working out quite as perfectly as she’d hoped.

Remember Henry still doesn’t know Mr. Gold is Rumple
Are you sure? I remember Henry being confused, but I think he figured it out… I forget which episode… maybe the Cinderella one….
He was confused about it in the Cinderella ep:
Henry: Do you know who that is?!
Emma: Yeah, of course I do.
Henry: Who? Coz I’m still trying to figure it out.Don’t think the topic has been addressed again since that scene.

Yes, that pretty much sums up an average day in my life. Unfortunately I don’t look quite as good as Regina in my standard issue stepmother skin-tight black leather pants and cape.

ParticipantI’d love for Regina to somehow morph into Ursula if/when they do The Little Mermaid. Now that I think of it, her sidekicks in the Disney movie…
Flotsam and Jetsam are Ursula’s green moray eel minions. They frequently do Ursula’s bidding and act as her spies, keeping their eye on the events unfolding in and around Atlantica. In The Little Mermaid, they are tasked with following Ariel and report her actions back to Ursula. They eventually manipulate Ariel into visiting Ursula in order to gain human legs. They are ultimately killed in the film’s climax when Ursula accidentally destroys them with King Triton’s trident. They were voiced by Paddi Edwards in the film.
Do her bidding and act as her spies? Sounds Dr Whale-ish to me! Maybe in the Once-iverse, Ursula/Regina only had the one eel and he’s been upgraded to whale status in Storybrooke?

ParticipantHmmm, could be a handle, could be a door knocker, but either way, ’tis a curious place to hang it, isn’t it.

What…Regina loves Henry…I didn’t catch that episode Just a little sarcasm…
LOL I musta missed that one too. 😉
Yes, she gives him the best things in life and sees that he’s looked after, but as for genuine affection, can’t say I’ve really seen any. She’s great at trying to crush what he passionately believes in, which doesn’t an affectionate parent make, though this is a unique situation and it’s understandable she wouldn’t want him believing what he does. Usually I’ve got nothing but praise for Lana’s portrayal of Regina, but if she’s been trying to show genuine love that Regina has for Henry, it’s just not workin’ for me. I just don’t see the character as being capable of love. I think she wishes she could love, but she’s just too far gone, so it’s not possible for her, which is a sad thing.

Legal realities aside, it will be interesting to learn the why and how of Regina getting Henry in the first place. My guess is that she was looking for someone to fill that void in her heart that Malificent predicted. And as we discussed in another thread, I think Regina will only be able to truly love Henry when she lets go of her hatred of Snow and learns to forgive.
Yes and yes. She was hoping the void would be filled, but the void is still there, and as long as she harbours such hatred, she’ll never be free to feel love again.

(Okay, in the interest of full disclosure I should say that I am an adoptive parent and the whole adoptive-mother-as-evil-witch and biological-mother-as-savior narrative is not my favorite!! 😆 )
Wouldn’t blame you for having a bias against that aspect of the storyline. I’ll bet there’s a step mother or two out there who isn’t a huge fan of fairytales. If you’re not the bio mother, you get a raw deal in FTL. 😉 Thankfully we’ve got the whole Evil Queen element to remove it from reality a bit, and I do honestly think that in the end, there’ll be a resolution that will give Regina and Henry that loving parent/child relationship. Even though she’s actually his great grandmother. LOL

ParticipantThanks, Pandora’s Imp. Someone on another forum called him that and I thought it was genius so I had to use it. 😉

ParticipantAngieBelle posted this link to the latest synopsis in another thread. Figured it should be in the spoiler section too:
http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/once-upon-a-time-2012/episode-20-season-1/the-stranger/319533Episode Synopsis: August tells Emma how to beat Regina and how she can get custody of Henry, while Regina hatches a plot to seduce David now that Mary Margaret is back at work. In the fairy-tale world, a plan to save Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter unfolds and is agreed to by Geppetto, who has his own child’s safety in mind.
Sounds to me like maybe the plan to save Emma wasn’t the only escape plan that was being planned. 😉
