ParticipantOf course August is Pinocchio without question — because Pinocchio:
— was destined to become a writer and was coached by Jiminy Crickett to develop his voice and viewpoint, not a conscience
— pursued his continual fascination with the magical properties of water (following his search for Gepetto inside the whale)
— acquired lots of masculine imagery (bike, leather jacket, etc) to attract babes (i.e. the Blue Fairy)
— got put on display for being a puppet without strings while biking around temples in Nepal
— showed a keen sense of how fairy tales really happened while he was impounded on the island where boys turn into donkeysYou would not believe how long my nose grew while I wrote this! 😆

ParticipantWhen writers work their magic, they frame characters and situations for emotional impact. The Wizard of OZ used this kind of magic when he framed the Dorothy and the trio as capable of killing off the Witch, and again when they succeeded. The Wizard had no ability like the Good and Wicked Witches.
We’ve already seen Regina frame Emma with breaking into Archie’s office and frame Mary Margaret with the murder of Kathryn. We’ve seen August frame Henry as a “smart kid” to Emma and as a “believer” like August to Henry. I suspect this sets up August having no magic like Emma transforming Jefferson’s hat or Regina’s remote killing of Graham. Thus August may use the kind of magic writers use very effectively, and be very similar to the Wizard of Oz in this regard.
Not to mention how I’m framing August here as I write.

ParticipantThanks for starting this excellent thread, dearie, whoops, I mean Dreary!

ParticipantThere are also clues for August being the Wizard of Oz in Regina’s conduct. In the musical version of The Wizard of Oz: “The Wiz”, the Wicked Witch of the West sings a wonderful song: “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”. If OUAT was a musical like Glee or Smash, Regina would have sung that song in almost every episode, most often to Mr. Gold, but also to Graham, Archie, Sidney, Jefferson, Emma and Henry. We have yet to see a conversation between August & Regina, just like there is never a direct conversation between the Wizard and the Wicked Witch in Oz.
August spoke of the magical qualities of water at the Well which returns something that has been lost. I’ve wondered if he knows how Dorothy melted the Wicked Witch with a bucket of water and can bring that magical property to effect in breaking the curse with Emma’s and Henry’s teamwork.

When Emma was telling Henry the story about his father, I got the sense that only the ending was made up. When she was talking about him coming into the diner and how he always asked if they had pumpkin pie, she seemed genuinely nostalgic IMO. Then she realised she’d need to fabricate the ending of the story because she didn’t want Henry knowing that his father ended up being a married man who had an affair with Emma then dumped her right after getting her pregnant. So I think Emma would recognise August if he was Henry’s father.
I got that same sense “genuine nostalgia” and “only the ending of her story being fabricated”. I’ve been wrestling with WHY Emma does not recognize August on sight ever since he started acting so fatherly toward Henry. I’ve come up with three theories thus far:
1. Emma has gotten in the face of so many dead-beat dads in her most recent line of work that she no longer remembers the face of the fireman back when she worked as a waitress.
2. Emma has slept around with so many guys the one who got her pregnant is merely “one more notch in her bed post”. August could only stir up some visceral recollections for her if she got in bed with him again. Visual recognition won’t work for her.
3. Emma has a major hot button called “abandonment issues”. It’s human nature to go blank and dissociate any encounter that pushes our hot buttons. August’s abandonment of Emma and her baby would have been so painful that she would have blotted it out of her mind to restore her composure.I like my 3rd theory much more than the other two. Emma’s abandonment issues have been worked in other episodes making them seem more central to the character arcs and plot movement.

ParticipantI’m continually stuck by how serene August appears, regardless of how Emma or Henry is reacting. For his calm presence to be so consistent suggests to me that he is neither Baelfire or harboring a dark agenda. I take him at his word when he said he’s here to help Emma believe. If he is Bae, I would expect him to seem angry, conflicted or manipulative to maintain a cover over his spiteful intentions.
I re-watched the Pilot episode yesterday and saw a new clue for trusting August’s intentions. When Emma rides down the Main Street, a crane shot lifts our viewpoint through the traffic light, which is red in that episode. In 1×10 True North, that same crane shot repeats with a green light when August rides his motorcycle down the Main Street. Since the traffic light is above the characters’ points of view, I’m taking that as a hint for us viewers. One interpretation is that the show’s writers are telling us to stop ourselves from going with Emma’s spin on everything and go with August’s.
In the preview of 1×19 The Return, Mr. Gold's paranoia about August being in SB to kill him– struck me as unfounded and delusional. Mr Gold has good cause to be extremely apprehensive with Rumple’s and his own history of abusing others. Having lived by the sword, he may die by the sword. But he fears would make him a poor judge of character and thus very susceptible to delusional fantasies.
Perhaps August is so serene because he know SB is entirely a delusional construct and only FTL is real.

ParticipantAugust wondered if he had a “shin splint”. I get shin splints from walking too fast or going for long walks in worn out shoes. Walking does not give me a wooden leg. It’s a crippling pain up the front of my lower leg. Here’s the Wikipedia explanation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_splints.

ParticipantJust before August unveiled his typewriter to Emma at Granny’s, he gave wonderful speech about the enticing effects of being mysterious. I suspect he was simultaneously unveiling how the writers of OUAT view their own approach to leading and misleading us.
