She crossed the town border. She followed Emma in S3b.

I can get on board with this, but there’s still more to their connection. Snow Queen would’ve had to have known Emma before S3B.

Yup. Emma is family. All these dark threats are getting a bit weary.

Remember that time Emma was determined to save Rumple from Hook’s poison when she found out he was Henry’s grandpa. “Because we’re family now.” So much for character growth.

I disliked Rumple threatening Emma just as much as I disliked Hook threatening Belle

The simple truth is that Killian Jones has low self-worth. And I know that sounds ridiculous since the man is always boasting about how handsome he is and his sex appeal and how he’s good in a fight, but really, those are the only things he boasts about. That’s where his confidence lies. He knows he’s hot, he knows he can satisfy a woman in bed and he knows he can kick anyone’s ass.

But there is a darkness in him and a self-loathing that makes him question his place in Emma’s world. He’s done terrible things. He believed at the time and maybe even now, that he did them for the right reasons, but that doesn’t make them any less terrible. That doesn’t make him any less of a pirate. And he loves Emma so much and he wants to be the best version of himself for her and he is, but because he has so many misgivings and so much guilt about the stuff he’s done in the past, it’s very easy to trigger his fears.

When we first heard that Killian would get his hand back, there was an ugly debate about it – whether it was sending the wrong message that he needs a hand to be whole. But it turned out that wasn’t the reason he wanted it at all. He wanted to be able to hold Emma with both hands because he believes that she deserves that – a man without a hook, a tool he’s used to bring fear and pain to his enemies for 300 years. He wanted to go as the best version of himself, and it wasn’t about needing a hand to be whole, it was about not having the reminder of the man he was hanging from his wrist. Same thing with his clothes. He changed them to distance himself and their date from his past because he’s moving forward with Emma and finally finding happiness.

And that is exactly why now, to answer your question. Because Killian was honest with Rumple when Rumple asked why he wanted his hand back and then he took advantage of that. Whether or not the hand was actually cursed doesn’t matter at all because Rumple put the seeds of doubt in Killian’s mind. He reminded him of how he used to behave and then he took advantage of his weak moments to force him into getting in even deeper – just like he did with Anna in the past. And Killian might not have Anna’s innocence, but he’s a man in love, wanting the absolute best for his love, and Rumple took that and manipulated it and used it against him, just like Zelena did when she cursed his lips last season.

It is frustrating to watch because we know that Emma and the Charming family would support him in a heartbeat if he’d gone to them and told the truth right away. Even if he does it now, they’d still support him and believe him because he’s proven himself and they care about him. But Killian doesn’t have the faith in himself to believe that. He knows they’re good people, but he still doesn’t believe that he deserves to have a place with them. And Rumple’s counting on that. He’s counting on his fears and his doubts so that he can continue to manipulate him into doing his bidding.

Not sure about the “self-worth” part.  Killian never struck me as having self-esteem issues. Yes, he does use his sexuality as a deflective tool (he is Captain Innuendo, after all) but I think that’s only because using his looks and sex to get his way has always come easy to him. The “self-loathing” part I agree with, especially since he’s come to know Emma.  There’s a fine line between right and wrong, and being a ruthless pirate, that line veers to the “wrong” end.  The guy hasn’t had a moral compass since Liam died. Now the Charmings are it, and Killian IS trying his damnedest to reform, even with this setback. So how long before he comes clean?

Well, we have two people in SB right now who shouldn’t be there (as in, were not brought by the curse). I know that Will COULD MAYBE have been brought by the curse, but since he was in WL living out his happy ending and not in the EF with everyone else, I’m going to assume he wasn’t. So, is it crazy to think maybe Will and this Snow Queen came from the same place? As in, maybe she was terrorizing WL and he and Ana, as good rulers, chased her out, but he got stuck in our world? That could be a reason for why he broke into her shop, as well; if he knows who she is, maybe he’s trying to catch her before Emma does. Maybe she’s done something to Ana, and he’s trying to get her to undo it. Just some ideas.

skips around the room making happy pterodactyl noises* I’M DROWNING IN FEELS AND IT’S GLORIOUS.

Not entirely sure what sounds pterodactyls make, but Yep, the feels are fantastic today 🙂

    Found this on tumblr.

I just wanted to throw this out there after what happened in the episode last night. Jen said this while they were just wrapping filming on episode 7. Not only do I absolutely believe Hook’s hand was cursed and Rumple used Hook’s insecurities against him to make him believe it wasn’t, I also think he’s going to come clean with Emma within 2-3 episodes. It doesn’t change the fact that Hook DID mess up last night, but as you can see from Jen’s tweet… when someone asked what Hook’s BEST quality is, this is what came to mind for her.

Have some faith in our boy — he let Rumple get the best of him and he had a bit of a backslide as a result but, he WILL beat this. He beat Pan’s manipulations and he will beat Rumple’s. Like Jen said, he has a FIERCE determination to be a better man and what he’s doing with Rumple obviously does not sit well with him. Pan underestimated Hook & Emma’s feelings for each other and so did Rumple. He tried to turn Hook’s love for Emma into a weapon and it is going to backfire in his face.

When Emma was battling her demons, Hook never left her side. He never let her forget that he believes in her and that she’s loved. And now she’s letting go of her past and becoming a beautiful, more enlightened version of herself and he had a hand in that. (No pun intended, haha) Emma knows this. We’ve already seen her trying to reassure him and comfort him this season…she will stand by him. She will remind him that he’s a hero and that she believes in him. I know it hurts but this is going to be SO GOOD in the long run. THIS is how Emma will inspire Killian this season. He’s going to see her let go of her baggage and embrace her magic and stand beside him and I just know it’s going to help him do the same.

“At the end of the day, Hook is a hero… he’s just not comfortable with admitting that to himself”

Emma won’t give up on the person she loves. And she won’t let Killian give up on himself. Killian was going to have to face his past eventually. He was going to come to this crossroad sooner or later. You don’t just decide to change after 300 years of being someone else and never mess up. There is beauty in the struggle and that’s what we’re seeing. Rumple was right, he DID do him a favor but, it wasn’t the one Rumple had in mind. This situation will ultimately help Kililan believe in himself and Emma will see him through it.

I bet Lily lies to Emma about being an orphan and she is just another person that proves to Emma that she can’t trust anyone but herself.

Interesting. I thought the runaway orphan would be the snow queen but that girl is not blond or even look like Elizabeth Mitchell.

    Yay for more Emma backstory!!

    Honestly?

    What a holy mess!

Several wonderful laugh lines. Emma:*What should I call you now, Captain Hand?* and Elsa: *…the only time I ever made anyone sweat* and subtly endearing Kristoff: “Well, I was going to say bad, but*.  Snow finally broke out of her matronly stupor and was…cute 🙂 And the dartboard miss was a great comic moment.

Also there were some genuine sweet and touching (no pun intended) moments during the date scenes. They all look like they had so much fun filming them. It is always an interesting scene when Emma opens the door to find Hook there. The entwined hand hug is fast becoming Emma’s and Hook’s affectionate trademark and it is perfect for them! And the shot of Hook hugging Emma’s back with both hands while she was wrapped in his jacket…totally heart tugging sweet. Nice smooch. They fit.

Will, I don’t know him and never watched Wonderland but I know his True Love story and the few seconds on his face when he saw the Wonderland book and the torn out picture of the Red Queen were wrenchingly tender and achy-soul gold.

Speaking of *gold*…jaysussss…I missed bad-arsed Rumple and edgy Hook, but even loving the bantering between Carlyle and Colin returning…whaaaat? Huh??? Who were these people (still laughing and mostly entertained from the sheer ping pong of who: has what control/no you don’t/oh,yes I do,/is changing /isn’t changing, is lying/is not/is, too, can hurt your girlfriend/already did/so there.) I’ve written a longer comment elsewhere in the vast wasteland of Internet chat but. truly, this is wacko in half a dozen ways.

Briefly, the hand in the jar was Killian Jone’s. A man who at the time that it was removed, was in a committed, consensual, deep love relationship and NOT the violently crocodile-hate driven, revenge bent, Neverland twisted demon of the seas. That was the main part of the HOOK.

Mumble mumble mumble. But Colin in angst is still wildly attractive. Rumple being lying, cheating, self-absorbed and self-serving, a totally natural state.

Henry….. DUH. Just DUHHHH. Belle, even DUHer.

The whole Regina/Henry/working in the shop/Operation Mongoose so they can change how the book was written, therefore plotting the potential demise of EVERYONE on the show as we know them? Just weird. Emma, running on the icy trail and not slipping all over the place? And even as a Fantasia lover,…The Walking Broom. I don’t know whether to snork or go awwwww. The mouse was clever, in a way, though. VHS proof from a surveillance camera in a house that Rumple didn’t know the location of before the broom trotted him there? ( moment of “how stupid” silence)

Shaking my head and still laughing, because, all in all, I continue to be entertained by the mess that is in Adam and Eddy’s storytelling brains.

Ack GAH. Just a holy mess of GAHH.

I’ll tune in next week, most certainly!!

This is a tricky episode…I really enjoyed it and some of the twists were pretty epic by the end. But it hasn’t corrected most of my fears for this season’s direction with regards to the regular characters’ development.

    Favorite stuff:

Rumple referring to Belle as the “only light in my life.” I love that callback to his line in 122 when he said she was a brief flicker of light in an ocean of darkness. He’s still drowning in the darkness, but she’s still his light. (And he’s screwing it up royally, stop it you stupid sexy imp.) Oh, and he was bringing her flowers! Blue ones!

Will clutching the picture of Anastasia. Just the way that played out brought me to the brink of tears. PLEASE let her be okay. (I’m not happy if she’s not going to be okay, but that bit was beautiful and well played.)

Belle actually having a spoken line! And being in her library! (I’m grasping here. I’m desperate. I think she almost had more screentime when she GOT FREAKIN LEFT BEHIND FOR HALF A SEASON.)

Hook having some interesting conflict. I actually do like your character (and adore Colin), Hook, I just wish you’d leave Bae’s family alone. Jeez.

The apprentice being turned into a mouse. Just as the snow queen is forever DQ to me, he is now forever Mickey, even if they deny it outright. It was a glorious moment.

The broom. It made me giggle. (I do enjoy the camp in Once a lot sometimes.)

Henry plotting to spend time with Grandpastiltskin. (But see least favorite bits: I like this because there’s a chance, half a chance, that he might actually SAY A WORD to his new grandma Belle, which he hasn’t done in three whole seasons, and he might actually have a scene where he talks to Rumple here or there and the two of them are awesome in the rare moments they’re together. So I like this as a setup for more Henry time with the Stiltskin side of his family.)

The hat actually having a purpose finally. A scary dark (and pretty, I think it’s my favorite bit of CGI outside of the Dark Castle yet) purpose but still. It does explain both why Rumple desperately needs the real dagger and why he’s been willing to deceive Belle.

Rumple being sneaky and making deals. Gah, I missed his dealmaking so much. (But also, see dislikes.)

Anna outwitting Rumple with the dagger. That was a beautiful moment.

Sven being Sven. And I’ve fallen for Kristoff badly (I didn’t like him nearly so much in the animated film, actually.)

    Least fave:

The date. Gah. Gah. Gah. Just…it was so meh, Emma felt so OOC (I get she’s supposed to be changing but she didn’t feel like Emma, or even like a protagonist–it really felt like Once Upon a Hook tonight). And while I love Daddy Charming to bits, and couldn’t help laughing, Snow’s acceptance of Hook for Emma after everything she has witnessed with Hook (who, you know, left them for dead, tried to help Cora kill them, etc etc etc…) and her cheerleading for Swanfire in S3 just felt wrong and also OOC. (Her excitement for the date made sense and was fun, it’s just her embrace of Hook felt wrong.)

Henry pushing Emma to date Hook. His father’s been gone what, a week, maybe two? (I know, I do the timeline, but A&E don’t really care about the accuracy here so in their heads maybe it’s been a day since Elsa came but a season since Neal died…) Also, while Hook’s spent every second with Henry since New York Serenade trying to win the kid over (and Henry never saw most of the “bad” Hook days in S2), I’m glad Henry phrased it the way he did–he’s not sure he’s okay with it, but wants his moms happy.

Which leads to Regina. Okay, Henry’s perceptive, he gets what they’re getting at but OMG Outlaw Queen is SO messed up right now. I can’t think of a single way to salvage it without it being horrible. And if Henry decides that to fix it the book should be written so Regina gets Robin, I will throw things.

And using Neal as an excuse to outmanipulate the master manipulator? No thanks. If Henry’s desire is in the least bit genuine, I’ll forgive it (especially if it leads to a) Henry-Belle bonding and LOTS of screentime for Belle–she DOES like books, you know, bring her in on Operation Mongoose, b) epic Henry-Rumple bonding where Henry & Rumple get more screentime together than Hook & Rumple for a few eps at least, or c) Henry releasing a universe of mages from the hat so that they’re spilling out of Gold’s shop and wandering around Storybrooke befuddled. Because that at least would be funny.). If it’s just an excuse and Henry suddenly doesn’t care a bit about his dad (when we know he did back in S2, sheesh), then throwing things will commence.

Rumple being a dastardly villain again: I love the manipulative imp but he was mean to Anna. And Hook (who, okay, asked for it). And Belle. And If Emma really loves Hook (mrgh) he was even threatening to hurt her with his blackmail (though some interpreted his threat as actually hurting Emma–I’m going to choose not to, but I could see it). Oh, and he probably killed Mickey 🙁  I don’t like seeing him hurt people even if I do like seeing him be clever and make deals and stuff. I know it’s part of who he is and his character wouldn’t be nearly so fascinating without that darkness, but it’s still hard to watch sometimes when you’re rooting for him to fight the darkness and he just keeps racking up the murder count. If they can connect the dots by showing that he’s motivated at least in part by wanting to protect Belle (oh, but then they’d have to maybe give her some screentime? heaven forbid they put an intelligent, adorable woman on the screen…) I -might- forgive it. I’m very forgiving, especially when it comes to Rumple…but I’d still like to see some of his character development actually on display.
