I think the message is, as is typical of OUAT, half-baked. I mean, love for whom? What sort of love? There are vast differences between the four messages of the episode:  (1)”you can die anytime, and therefore carpe diem” (Emma/Hook),  (2)”you have only one shot at this, so be present” (Snowing), (3)”I’d rather die than give up on the people I love” (Cinderella), and (4)”we are over, but our love for our child transcends our individual interests” (Rumple/Belle).

These different messages are all about love, yes, but they are not all love over life. In 3 of these cases, the message is about love transcending ego. Rumple and Ashley are on the “winning” side of that equation, at least for now. Snow has the right message, but Charming is not listening. And Emma is, pretty explicitly, all ego — it’s all about jealousy, and fulfilling someone else’s expectations.

I thought this was actually a decent episode, considering it was largely a filler. It advanced some characters, put Charming back at the center, and got things moving along. Maybe a 7/10

    Liked:

Snow and Charming were, for the first time in a long time, actually interesting. And Snow’s speech to Charming, while TM Snow, I actually bought. He does have a life and responsibilities, and no chance to “do over” — he’s got a young child, and this is it. So I actually was impressed, despite the thorough predictability of the drama.

The Rumple lullaby tape. I took this to be a poem that Rumple gave to Belle to sing to her child — not necessarily something to play to him, but something for her to make her own. I thought it was incredibly touching. Have we ever seen Rumple sing to little Baelfire? I feel like we have, but maybe that’s a false memory — it just makes so much sense with his character. I have colleagues who, having to travel for work, do something like this — videotape themselves reading a favorite storybook so that the other parent can play it in their absence to the kid. OUAT doesn’t manage subtle yet heart-wrenching very often, but I could absolutely relate to this, and thought this was a rare moment of true-to-life loveliness.

    Stepmother gets the cake

    EQ is a delight.

    Lasagna scene

Flashbacks weren’t pointless, and actually expanded the story we already knew.

    Disliked

The reverse good/bad step sister was a bit of a stretch. Also, the commentary about class was tedious and flat-footed. Before they can tackle class AE need to realize that they just “happen” to run many of their lower class characters through a woodchip mill. I suppose that’s better than their treatment of PoC characters, but still.

Hook / Henry fighting with sticks. Really? That wasn’t cute when Henry was 10, why should it be cute when Henry’s on the cusp of growing facial hair???

Emma barges into to Dr Hopper’s office like it’s her kitchen, plops on the couch, and goes into a tantrum about being jealous of Ashley’s “normal” family life? Then asks Hook to move in? Really? This woman is meant to be the empowered female lead?

Also, season 1 established Ella was livin with her stepsisters and stepmother…. But only one of the sisters should be in SB.

Nope. This is what was said:

Emma: Um, Ruby. What about her family?
Ruby: Oh, um, she’s got a stepmom and two stepsisters that she doesn’t talk to.

She wasn’t living with them in Storybrooke, and it was even specifically said that she didn’t talk to them. The curse would have still given her memories of having a stepfamily, but it didn’t necessarily mean that they were really in Storybrooke. Ashley not talking to them in Storybrooke actually makes more sense now, in hindsight.

Overall a pretty entertaining episode.  I give it a 7.5/10

    Liked:

Snow and Charming.  I liked that Snow wanted a normal life where she is a teacher and he is a sheriff and they are parents.  I loved the conversation between them about what is important versus what is “epic” and I love the fact that Charming recognizes him being a father was the most important job to do.

I liked Rumple sending Belle a poem that she can play for his child. I thought it was sweet and very well done.  I like that Belle was at least willing to listen to the tape to find out what was on it.  A step forward for Belle.

I liked the back story of the step sister even if we are not invested in her story I still liked it.

I continue to like Mr. Hyde and continue to be intrigued by him.  He kind of reminds me of Rumple in the fact that he is a opportunist.

Lana as the Evil Queen is really fun to watch

Archie’s advice of living each day for its full worth.  Yet again Charming tells Emma this exact same thing in Season 2 but maybe she is just like every other child and needs to hear it from someone else.

Zelena telling Regina that instead of blaming her maybe she should look at herself and the fact that she ripped herself in two.  YES, Regina the evil queen does not need to be killed she needs to be accepted as part of you. We may not like every part of our past, but our past makes us who we are today and accepting and forgiving ourselves for our past mistakes helps us grow as people.

    Disliked:

Where did Emma get Ashley’s shoe and why does she have it? I assuming that was a locator spell?

Why did we need a completely paralleled scene of Hook playing swords with Henry.  Guess what writers we know that scene which was in Season 2 with Neal playing swords with Henry.  Badly Done

So was there a third step-sister, Anastasia?  I am going to assume that there was and Anastasia has already run off to Wonderland with Will.

I have never liked Ashley as a character and I continue not to.  I have always found her selfish, inconsiderate, and a “princess”  This episode did not change my opinion of her at all.  What exactly did she do  to help out this episode?  All I saw happen is she put her self in danger (just like I would say with Snow, Emma, Regina, Robin, David, etc. you are a parent  first and you can’t be that if you are dead) and then Emma swooped in used magic that did not come with any price (what happened to ALL magic comes with a price) and healed her.

OVERALL: I thought this episode was fine, good even. There’s a lot of smaller moments I really liked and the flashback finally felt relevant and a bit magical since it’s mostly straight up Disney. But the scenes, moments, themes I didn’t like…I really didn’t like . And yeah, Anastasia. That’s a big negative for me. It’s about the same as last week for me, honestly. A 7.5/10

    LIKED

–Mouse!Gus Gus is everything. Let’s have an episode of Gus Gus and Sven from S4.

–The lasagna scene was well done

–Alexandra is a very cute child.

–“Some scars don’t heal.” This line was said to Emma and it would really behoove her to talk about her lifelong scars instead of only focusing on her boyfriend not getting his HEA.

–“Is this our life now: defeat and repeat?” I actually really liked this “normal” conversation between Snowing. It’s a much needed conversation.

–The EQ’s hair and blue gown are on point.

–“You look like a trash bin and you have the education of my cat.” Wow

–The flashback overall was well done with some of that S1 magic about uncovering a story you thought knew but really there is more to it.

–Bobby’s almost-real Scottish accent. Lovely. (you can it’s not totally his real one which is beyond Scottish)

    MIXED

–Emma’s session with Archie. On the one hand, Emma talking to someone is GREAT but on the other hand…it all comes back to Hook. It always comes back to Hook. She’s bummed that she can’t give Hook a future. What about your child, Emma Swan?? What about your family and friends and town? What about YOU?

–I’m confused. How did Ella’s mother get that key to the Land of Untold Stories? And why did she give it to Rumple? That wasn’t in “Price of Gold.” It’s sort of retconnish.

–The step sisters and step mother were wonderfully catty but I really could have done without the whole “misunderstood step sister who is secretly a nice person” storyline. We just met her; I have no reason to care about her.

–Emma reminding Ashley to punch back and tell people who she is, is a nice callback to S1 though this time it falls flat since Emma is a shell of her former self and is constantly negotiating her identity through her boyfriend.

    DISLIKED

–Emma barging into a shrink’s office is a total no-no. Those sessions are confidential and that’s really egotistical of Emma to think she can just show up and basically have Archie kick Grumpy out. And on that note, that’s really unprofessional of Archie.

–Dopey is off getting his Masters? Are you kidding me? I was thinking it raises questions about the curse once again; even if his BA was granted by the curse it doesn’t hold any meaning outside of SB to any university because his BA is for all intents and purposes fake. It’s like in “Save Henry” when Gold used his contacts outside of SB to find Henry for Regina. The curse did not manufacture real contacts, only memories of fake contacts but any attempt to act on those memories couldn’t actually happen because the curse did not affect the world outside of SB.

–Anastasia. Anastasia. Anastasia. Say it with me: OUATinWL is CANON.

–Hook and Henry “stick” fighting. Stop re-imagining Henry and Neal scenes to be Hook and Henry. It’s not okay.

–Ella’s response to Clorinda’s indignation over Ella telling Lady Tremaine is “but look! I’m engaged!” Wow, seriously?

–Let’s not call an ambulance or poof the bleeding victim to a hospital! Let’s have Emma and her wonky magic heal Ella and save her from certain death! (But don’t they now owe the Fury a soul??)

This is the most accurate depiction I think anyone’s ever given about Adam & Eddy. They believe that they’re thriving off of twilight fan girls and neglect to see that there are actual adults watching the show. I’m not too sure on ratings wise, but I think people in their mid to late twenties and above are watching this series, and the declining ratings clearly show that the General Audience are displeased with the storytelling. Baiting and shoving ships down everyone’s throats is not the way to run a show, and it’s terribly sad when your main character is more associated with a ship than as their own person with their own story and journey. Snow White and Charming are now simply referred to as Snowing, who Adam and Eddy believe they can just kill two birds with one stone by making every one of their storylines put together. Colin O’Donoghue better be glad for his above than average looks because that is what’s selling Captain Hook, who if separated from Emma Swan, what would be his purpose? That was the same situation with Robin Hood, who also due to poor and neglected storytelling, couldn’t stand on his own as a character without piggy banking along with Zelena right off of Regina.

Without a doubt most of the audience of this show is adults over 25 and the writers seem to have no awareness of this fact. Or they consider any woman younger then them to be some crazed twilight like fan. They are angering their target audience with every tweet, every interview, and every episode and don’t get it. I am not convinced they ever will get it.

I just can’t believe they’re going to let Gwen stay magically roofied….I just can’t! And Merlin, he would’ve been a great asset to have in Storybrooke! How they treated their characters were beyond disturbing, and it is the reason why I’m so nervous for them to be toying with Aladdin and Jasmine!

It is almost like the writers need to have a cork board with all the characters they are using for a season on a card and have written where each character is at at that moment. Instead, they introduce a character and then by the next week have completely forgotten about them. I know that writing is hard and that keeping everything straight and consistent is hard, but they have to do better. They will make mistakes, everyone does, but it is to the point of insanity now.

They don’t understand fandom or social media. They think that people talking about the show is good even if people find it extremely problematic. The majority of the actors are in their late 30s. I think there is a generational divide here.

I think it’s probably part generational, part ideological. This isn’t just about social media use, it’s about what people get upset about, and whether the show runners can actually take the criticism seriously without immediately getting defensive or dismissing the critique (which A&E can’t). It seems that A&E genuinely think that what they’re writing is “feminist” by virtue of having female protagonists, and giving them occasionally “sassy” dialogue lines. And get totally pissed off when their audience suggests that well, guys, maybe that’s not quite enough anymore.

    They really don’t get it.

This is it exactly and it extends into every aspect of their show. Like, you mentioned Hook, but it goes to their continued PoC problem–they were getting creamed by fans and even some critics about their lack of PoC representation and how they treated their PoC characters. So what did they do? They cast a Latina Gwen and an African Merlin—and then proceeded to have Gwen raped and Merlin killed to further a white character’s plot. They think the simple act of casting two diverse characters is enough because they may hear the complaints, but they don’t listen, really and truly listen. Substitute PoC for LGBTQ or anyone not heterosexual, white, and young.

Adam & Eddy are Indian givers with this show…they’ll toss a token towards the people who need it, play with it for an episode or two, ruin it, and take it away.

Speaking honestly, I’ve seen better written Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Episodes with my baby boy, than what we’ve seen on OUAT from Adam and Eddy. The first two episodes this season have been great so far, but I know a dip is coming sooner or later.

Sure, but this isn’t impossible to solve. Something to the effect of this: “Yes, we would have loved to pursue the Cinderella/Anastasia connection, but since Emma Rigby is very busy with other projects, we decided that this isn’t a storyline we can do justice to without her. But we are so thrilled that people remember and care about Ana’s story and we are so lucky to have such smart, attentive fans. Thank you all!” Boom, done. Upholds the fans, upholds Emma Rigby no matter what she feels about A&E, addresses audience’s question, and doesn’t try to gaslight everyone.

They did that with Jafar actor, which in his case is true, he has other stuff and contracts with other companies,  but the problem happens, when she is not busy, she is not doing anything at the moment, at least according to her imbd page, she has several projects to premierethis year and one next year, but nothing doing now( at least that is known in her page), bc in the end they cant made up projects when the actors are not doing anything.

But then again, they could be real writers and end what they started and do some storylines in a row, and stop this, of doing some storylines in one season and only 2 or 3 seasons after return to them,  heck they dont even know their show timeline,  that is their problem, they start some stories, get a new toy to play at the middle of the story, dont end it, retcon 3000 things in btw, and when they have no more ideas they want to go back, but is not possible anymore, bc doesnt fit in the storyline anymore ( this whole cinderella family being in the LoUS, is another retcon of s1, bc ruby said to henry and emma that Ella was living with 2 step sisters and one stepmother in SB, so they couldnt be in LoUS) or the actors are not available anymore.

That is another problem of them, if they didnt confirmed it in Wonderland, that leaves the door open for them to retcon, there are so many scenes like that on ouat, where the scene is open to several interpretations.
